fjordan··on Ask HN: What music makes you a productive programmer?
A Turntable.fm room that won't kick me for inactivity. Usually one of the house/trance/electro rooms.

fjordan··on Ask HN: Who were Steve Jobs' mentors?
During his trip to India, Jobs met with Neem Karoli Baba and eventually became Buddhist. He also experimented with LSD. I imagine these experiences, as he specifically states, had a large impact on his life.
fjordan··on How Exercise Can Strengthen the Brain
I have personally found the most benefit by basing my workouts around one of the main powerlifting exercises - squat, bench press, or deadlift.

Cardiovascular exercise is best performed after a weightlifting session and provides additional benefits.

fjordan··on Bootstrapping a $30k profit/month company from our internship earnings (Part 4)
I'd like to hear more about the development of these applications. Any chance you'll provide an interview with your developer?
fjordan··on Bootstrapping a $30k profit/month company from our undergrad internship earnings
My guess is James Long.

If you look at their "About Us" page it names who they have worked with.

fjordan··on H-P's One-Year Plan
I agree.

Many people who haven't dealt with HP in business are unaware of the large amount of enterprise software they provide. For example, HP is one of the largest healthcare software providers. Just go to their website and take a look.

fjordan··on If Software Is Eating The World, Why Don't Coders Get Any Respect?
I say software programming is a support profession.

Isn't medicine also a support profession? A good doctor will proactively prevent sickness and death, while most will deal with it as it happens.

fjordan··on Q&A: Meet the 15-year-old who just sold his tech startup
I've had a similar experience in that time spent by myself in the "solitary" environment of a computer was very looked-down upon by my parents. I don't think either of them fully understood the amount of mental stimulation and learning that computers can provide. I was able to teach myself C in high school; this provided me with an advantage to other students in University in the introductory programming classes.

They never had any problem if I chose to watch TV socially instead of spend time alone. However, I rarely watch TV simply due to the lack of stimulation and interaction, not to mention the amount of garbage that is broadcast these days, unless it is in a social environment.

I have tried in the past to convince them of the benefits of what I am doing, but they simply refuse to acknowledge "computer time" as independent educational exercise.

fjordan··on Advice From An Old Programmer
You should learn to apply your knowledge of programming to his business.

I find that that when knowledge of programming and software systems is combined with business, one has the potential to create a highly profitable autonomous system which only requires the initial investment of time (and hard work, of course).

fjordan··on Ask HN: What's Your Story?
That's very interesting. I will have to take a look.

I think the point you brought up about the observance of younger children of their superiors is very true. I can recall fond moments of watching my father work on our early DOS machine. I used to play Doom II and Duke Nukem on Sunday nights as a kid and seemed to learn DOS quickly. However, as I stated earlier, it wasn't until later in high school that my interest seriously grew.
