fjabre··on Vaping Illnesses Are Linked to Vitamin E Acetate, CDC Says
Nicotine is specifically harmful to lung tissue.

You state that smoking weed has carcinogenic effects similar to tobacco which very obviously is not the case. They are completely different drugs with completely different side effects. Smoke from marijuana does not equal smoke from tobacco. I am not saying its without negative consequences but they are apples and oranges.

Of course we have research on smoked flower. 1000s of years of research. Mankind has been smoking this plant longer than recorded history and Ill take that any day over the literature at pubmed. I would love for the feds to allow more research of course but its still schedule 1 so not much to be done.

fjabre··on Ask HN: Random upper back pain is ruining my life. At wits end. Anyone else?
Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation can help dramatically. Otherwise know as rPMS in the literature.

Most people know it as TMS though (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) or rTMS.

fjabre··on We are leaving the Apple App Store and all its problems
That's basically like saying you prefer to live under a totalitarian regime than a democracy because: security. Humans gladly trade their freedom for security as your comment implies, you are comfortable with that.

The web is, or at least was in part, a democracy. Apple is clearly a dictatorship.

Trust doesn't really come into it. You trust your user data to 3rd parties every single day using apps that very publicly compromise you like FB, Google etc. So to say that you trust your relationship with Apple doesn't mean squat. Sure Apple is good at preventing people from breaking into your iPhones, but it's not good at stopping Facebook from selling your data to 3rd parties which you talk about. Your security is already compromised.

In the days even before the web we had many programs from independent 3rd parties that have now turned into household names today.

I refuse to believe that Apple's incredibly convoluted App store is the way forward. I ultimately believe Apple will fail here and have to make major changes, indeed I hope it does.

fjabre··on Google Announces Nest WiFi
Was forced to when I wanted to add their cloud monitoring service. The payment system is now Google's.
fjabre··on Google Announces Nest WiFi
I detest the fact that Google bought Nest. Now I have the pleasure of logging into a convoluted Google UX instead of the familiar Nest UX.

And here we have another intrusion of Google into our home. It's clear Google has no respect for anyone's privacy and is now a part of the problem.

fjabre··on My Time at Snap
Couldnt agree more with this and having experienced something similar I will never work for a micro manager again.
fjabre··on Birds Are Vanishing from North America
Thats true. Reddit seems to be more infested with the pro monsanto crowd. Many of their arguments sound very legitimate as in - try feeding the human race some other way type arguments. But then we must consider this ongoing mass extinction event which seems intimately tied to the use of pesticides and herbicides that apparently, according to the experts, are not harmful to unintended insect populations.

It’s hard to know whats true and what isnt with all the misinformation being spread around.

fjabre··on Birds Are Vanishing from North America
Anytime someone brings up Monsanto they are downvoted because without pesticides humans cannot feed themselves apparently. And herbicides are for plants only so of course they have no effect on insects. /s
fjabre··on 50 U.S. states and territories announce broad antitrust investigation of Google
The only way forward is p2p.

Inet in current form is too susceptible to governments and bad actors like Google who only work for their shareholders.

Has google released anything worthwhile the last several years?

What has happened to the culture of innovation at Google? We still know them for gmail, maps, and search but what have they done lately? They seem bland by comparison to the Google of the late 90s and 2000s.

Why has Google become the new Microsoft?

fjabre··on 50 U.S. states and territories announce broad antitrust investigation of Google
You forgot AMP and AMP for Gmail
fjabre··on Workers Are Fleeing Big Cities for Small Ones, and Taking Their Jobs with Them
And recent grads a place that is affordable. All my friends from Los Angeles have moved to Texas and Florida (some are families) and they are all progressive like most in Californian major cities. So they will make those states more blue. Which goes against what youre saying.

I fail to see why families from big cities would be red. Most in big cities are progressive, even families. I havent seen data that would suggest otherwise

fjabre··on Workers Are Fleeing Big Cities for Small Ones, and Taking Their Jobs with Them
Does this mean smaller cities are getting bluer?
fjabre··on Show HN: Lazyday - Find something to watch
sweet! thanks for checking it out.

fjabre··on A Trailblazing Plan to Fight California Wildfires
Prescribed burns work. Agreed. It's a partial solution we already know about.

Would love to hear some new ideas in 2019 however, but maybe that's asking too much.

fjabre··on A Trailblazing Plan to Fight California Wildfires
My comment was clear. I am talking about throwing 10 Elon Musks at the problem. Heck let's throw 50 Elons at it.

The article spends more time describing the Californian landscape and history of fire fighting than what it proposes as a solution. Good luck keeping up with the super blooms. California is a large state with lots of unreachable areas. Where and when these things start is clearly unpredictable.

Mediocrity at its finest.

fjabre··on A Trailblazing Plan to Fight California Wildfires
That they are still taking about the same prevention techniques for decades is depressing. You would think a state home to some of the worlds best and brightest engineers could come up with a better solution to this than the same old tired argument of forest fire prevention and prescribed burns.
fjabre··on A Trailblazing Plan to Fight California Wildfires
Fast effective reaction to mega blazes will be key. That they are pretty much talking about the same thing they have been for decades is depressing.
fjabre··on A Trailblazing Plan to Fight California Wildfires
What is trailblazing about this? A state home to best and brightest engineers on the planet and they can't figure out how to put out a fire. But they can make self driving cars, rockets to mars, uber scooters, and delivery drones.

The answer to this isn't the forest service or the state government. The answer to this is in the private sector.

Instead of making the next facebook how about saving the state from fires that could wipe out its offices?

Is this really the best California can come up with? Does anyone know of any ventures in this space that are up to the challenge?

There is nothing trailblazing about the plan in this article. It's more of an iteration on the same failed policies of the past that got us here in the first place. The forest service is ill suited for this challenge.

fjabre··on When a rewrite isn’t: rebuilding Slack on the desktop
I think Slack’s web interface is ideal.

I fail to see the need for a slack desktop client.

fjabre··on Airbnb likely removed 31,000 homes from Canada’s rental market, study finds
I've had mostly negative experiences with Airbnb over the years.

My neighbors airbnb their house every weekend. So nice loud music and rude guests to deal with fairly often. Of course why not? They are not accountable to rest of us full timers in my neighborhood.

My place was broken into by someone who stayed at it before using Airbnb.

One guest almost started a fire and had to be removed.

Checking in and out of airbnbs can be a bit of a nightmare. Everyone has their own process for checkin.

Airbnb destroying local real estate markets is no surprise. They've been doing it for several years and getting in trouble for it for several years.

Growth at all costs - no matter what it does to local markets or people's lives. I'm sure their impact on local economies is the least of their concern until the governments attached to those economies start to speak up.

fjabre··on Audit suggests Google favors a small number of major news outlets
Google News has no concept of 'agree with' it simply tries to find a news result based on what it thinks you want to see.

There are no politics baked in.

Google news will display what its users want to see.

Your issue is not with Google News. Your issue is with the users of Google news.

fjabre··on Microplastics Are Blowing in the Wind
I'm more concerned about runaway warming at the moment.
fjabre··on Microplastics Are Blowing in the Wind
I couldn't agree more with the long term consequences. Maybe someday we will target these plastics with plastic eating microbes.

Is warming not the more pressing issue? Given recent findings about permafrost decline in the artic? By some estimates we may have 50-100 years at best before things get really bad, and we are already undergoing a mass extinction event.

fjabre··on Google Cloud Healthcare API
I was referring to all frameworks/standards that the HL7 org has developed for handling of patient/clinical data.

Patient data is not special other than its security requirements. There does not need to be a layer of standards in this space dedicated to handling/transfer of clinical/hospital data between organizations. Private industry & hospitals can solve this without the need for a standards board or HL7 standards. We have enough standards for handling/transfer of sensitive data.

Engineers have already solved that with interoperable data systems dedicated to managing and sorting through large sets of data. Healthcare data is simply data. There are plenty of other types of highly sensitive data that don't need an entire organization dictating bloated standards implementations that are already highly fragmented themselves.

HL7 is an unnecessary abstraction.

fjabre··on Google Cloud Healthcare API
HL7 is a joke as are most acronyms in the healthcare tech space.

It's like reading through a framework devised by lawyers and policy makers. I cant wrap my head around healthcare tech to save my life and ive been working the field for 15 years. It's a jumbled mess.

HL7 is what happens when a regulator designs a tech framework.

fjabre··on Google’s constant product shutdowns are damaging its brand
Probably not. I think going public ruins the ability of such a company to maintain a moral compass. It certainly vanquished any idea of maintaining their 'don't be evil' motto.

They simply could have committed not to becoming a publicly traded company. I know every YC investor looks at going public as the end all be all for every company on earth but I think the pursuit of the public market at all costs mindset typically espoused by communities like this one is morally devoid and obviously has long term consequences in the tech community at large.

Go public at all costs is the mindset here and in most VC communities. Make money at all costs is really what they mean to say. Get rid of that mindset.

Google used to have a moral compass. That was the Google I grew up with. Before all the pressures of being a publicly traded multibillion-dollar conglomerate got to them and now they are basically no better than ATT.

fjabre··on Google’s constant product shutdowns are damaging its brand
Google's only obligation is to its shareholders. AMP serves its interests. So does building covert search engines to help root out chinese dissidents.

That 'cat and mouse' game is the natural order of things. There is no stopping that other than making things anti-competitive which is what Alphabet clearly wants to do.

Google has become evil and we should expect nothing less from a multibillion dollar conglomerate like Alphabet. This isnt the Google we grew up with. This is the publically traded company Alphabet which will do anything to increase their bottom line whether its ruining the internet with things like AMP or selling search services used to imprison chinese citizens.

Google should be ashamed of itself. Would never take a job at a company like Alphabet. It conflicts with my sense of ethics and morality.

fjabre··on Klotho – There May Be a Drug to Turbocharge Your Brain. Who Should Get It?
Intelligence can mean a great many things.

If we are simply making people better at cognitive tests then whats the point really? Nothing exciting there.

If we are making more Einsteins and Steve Jobs then Im more inclined to say we are increasing our intelligence in a meaningful way.

I think we need to be careful about our scales and definitions when speaking on the true nature of human intelligence and intellect otherwise we're all just blowing hot air. IQ is an antiquated measure of intelligence for example. If we are talking about extra IQ points then who cares.

fjabre··on Developing for Android is like being a demonetized YouTuber
I think the point you make about walled gardens needs to be addressed more than it is. It seems to have become normalized across all platforms and that is disturbing.

I fundamentally disagree with the premise of a walled garden when there are no other options to install on a device.

The web is the only freedom devs have left and even that is starting to erode - article 13, neutrality etc.
