fjabre··on Technosolutionism Isn’t the Fix
Ah so they have cured themselves of the virus have they?

South Korea is 4 times smaller than California. And its population many times more homogeneous than any of the 50 states.

New Zealand is an island nation with half the population of New Jersey

Thailand has had several recent outbreaks and hotspots.

Also that you believe Chinas/Vietnam/Thailands reporting is making a lot of assumptions. Governments in SE Asia have a very strong hold on what gets reported. You absolutely cannot trust the numbers they are reporting. To do so is irresponsible at best.

Weird how you compare apples to oranges and expect it to be a fair comparison.

Fear is a great motivator for giving up individual freedoms. That much is clear. How easily we give up our fundamental rights in the name of security and fear.

fjabre··on Technosolutionism Isn’t the Fix
Your analogies fall short when talking about a microscopic virus.

It's funny how many people underestimate this virus in terms of its ability to mutate and spread.

And it's laughable that people think this can be contained with 'contact tracing' and 'monitoring' the movements of private citizens. It is a force of nature.

Contact tracing simply gives the illusion of control while giving governments and excuse to spy.

How easily free citizens give up basic fundamental rights in the name of Fear.

fjabre··on Testosterone levels show steady decrease among young US men
The ones staying inside all day playing Cyberpunk and not moving from the couch all day? Surprise. We've turned ourselves into actual couch potatoes. Wall-E was prophetic in this regard.

I would love to see this on a chart next to video game and netflix original series releases.

fjabre··on Twitter shuts down account of Sci-Hub
I absolutely agree with this line of reasoning. Thank you.
fjabre··on PG: Twitter made a mistake in banning Sci-Hub
I agree with PG. Twitter could've taken a stand. But as it seems now they are too mired in partisan politics and grandstanding to pay any attention to other news.

I think Jack Dorsey should step down. Twitter has become a magnet for trolls with an axe to grind. He inserted himself far too much in the politics of the day and got just what he wanted it seems. What a negative and dark place Twitter has become.

fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Excellent breakdown. Thank you. Yes as I've said only legislation will end this tyranny.

To guard this data to the point they were willing to throw Aaron Swartz in jail for 35 years is beyond reprehensible. It's simply abhorrent the way they have acted as gatekeepers to this kind of knowledge.

They are responsible for slowing things down. Not speeding them up. These gatekeepers are holding us back. Lives could be saved. Millions of them. This data is a benefit to humanity as a whole and it should be treated as such.

fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Then Elsevier should be just fine when it loses this part of its business.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
You write like someone who's a cynic.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Obama failed in this regard. But Obama does not represent all dems. Nor does Obama represent Dems in 2021.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
I couldn't agree more. However there are voices at the fringes getting much much louder on both sides who are definitely not the same thing.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Not all dems.

We all know what we got with the Republicans last 4 years. Let's see what changed on the other side of the aisle if anything.

fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
That's unfortunate. Good thing he's really old with not much time left. Not that I wish him harm. He's certainly better than a lot of alternatives.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
I think data wants to be free. Charge for the applications not the data. Data should be free.

This saves lives. I think we can all agree there are certain things that are a benefit to humanity and we should place these things over profits.

These companies are less valuable than they appear IMHO. These gatekeepers of knowledge. More like stonewallers.

fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Yes there's also people who think they always know better.
fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Who said anything about elimination of copyright? Who said I was more aligned with 'them' ?

Most scientific research is funded with grants and by universities with billion dollar endowments. They are not struggling.

You should not make money on the deaths of others because you think it's more important to charge for the knowledge that can save them.

I'm in medical. Some of these papers are life saving. Please don't discount how valuable that science is to humanity as a whole.

This is not about companies making profit. This is about science and the freedom of information. Data wants to be free and it should be.

fjabre··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
Hopefully with Dems in control we will see these companies punished for their bad behavior. Or at least laws passed that make the publication of research more open.

The science should be funded and free. The applications of the science are where the money is to be made.

These companies are unnecessary dinosaurs from a bygone era. It's time for them to fail and die off naturally. But it will probably take legislation to do so. And I for one can't wait to see them gone.

fjabre··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
Little different when a drone is hanging out over your 52nd floor penthouse with an HD cam of your most of your apartment and the ability to get closer and see things in your place that you can't even see with your naked eyes.

Then I don't even have the option of throwing my phone or alexa in the fireplace.

This makes sense to me. Not sure where people are getting lost. This commenter p410n3 is clearly a cynic. Some people think the world is always listening, always watching them. But what they don't realize is they blend in with the noise because they aren't all that important. No one cares to listen to them. I don't think they like that answer though ;)

I just don't like the idea of a flying high def camera in my face that I can't grab and smash against the wall. Because it's literally flying above me out of reach.

If I had tech to destroy it. I would use that tech. I guess a gun would work if you're a good shot. They use hawks in Scotland.

fjabre··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
Is that so?
fjabre··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
This will bring about new technology to deal with the rising threat. People don't take kindly to being constantly spied on. I imagine many will take matters into their own hands.
fjabre··on How much longer will we trust Google’s search results?
Best thing I've read this year. Couldn't agree more.
fjabre··on How much longer will we trust Google’s search results?
Just came here to say that Google's new ad layout is deliberately misleading and Google's search results are starting to look like spam all over.

Who in the hell is in charge of search at Google right now? What a god awful job. The engineer in charge should be fired for such an abomination.

fjabre··on Tesla races past $100B in market valuation
Does Porsche have domain expertise in launching vehicles into orbit? Do you not think that the cross pollination between Musk's ground breaking companies won't give him a competitive edge against incumbents?

I don't think anyone realizes just how significant it is to have Silicon Valley know how in this industry where the visionary is an engineer and not a traditional CEO salesman.

It defies common sense that people question this so much. It's so obvious that Musk is disrupting all of these industries at once and breaking new ground daily.

I think, judging by the downvotes of my above comment that people are jealous or envious of Musk and they will always have a negative reaction to his success.

fjabre··on Tesla races past $100B in market valuation
Musk is a disrupter and he is disrupting this industry turning it on its head. We've been stuck in the same boring recycled car designs and concepts for decades and here comes Elon with the promise of self driving flying cars on their way to Mars with SpaceX in the background making incredible strides forward everyday.

To be honest I think this valuation is too low. Elon continues to eat the competition's lunch on a daily basis with new ideas and approaches to just about every industry he touches. The competition will be left in the dust once he straps some rockets on his new model Ts.

All the incumbents are slow, fat, and happy with a lot of inertia and management layers from decades of success. They became too fat and too comfortable. They all look old fashioned by comparison to what Musk is producing.

EDIT: Top comment is disparaging Musk's success here. I think in all honesty there are a lot of people who are envious of Musk so they will always have something negative to say when he or his companies are in the news.

fjabre··on Every Google result now looks like an ad
Even worse type in "What to watch" and now Google pushes its own app on you and pushes down legitimate web results for this search in favor of their web app solution for this search.

As an independent app dev I find this unconscionable.

I expect to be fed web results that are not tainted by Google's own offerings especially not in the form of an web app that pushes other independent results halfway down the page.

It's actions like this that make it clear Google is a threat to the web at large and this threat needs to be neutralized or we will all pay down the line.

fjabre··on The first video of individual atoms bonding and breaking
Maybe we will have more breakthroughs as these visualization techniques improve.

This is truly an awesome accomplishment. Hats off to the scientists & engineers who made this happen.

fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
Yes definitely lots of fine tuning still needs to be done for the similar titles playlist. It should be ok with most titles. I noticed that's a Netflix title so the algorithm maybe constraining the similar titles to the Netflix catalog. I have to look at that code again. Since there's less selection in Netflix the recommendations won't be as good because there's less to choose from. Some titles with less meta data are harder to get right as well.
fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
Very insightful. Thank you.

Yes Lazyday is a rules based search engine. It makes best guesses based on what's currently popuplar, the movie's meta data and user search preferences and history. We have not evaluated it against a CF system in an A/B setup. Of course we have years of user frustration with Netflix / Prime recommends that has taught us a few valuable lessons about how to solve the problem of what to watch next.

And yes it seems intuitive to assume that two people with the same tastes will like the same titles. The problem is, I might not be in the mood for movie A even though my virtual twin is, sometimes I would be in the mood for movie A if I had company that was also in the mood for movie A. So many edge cases when a recommendation engine is trying to guess what you want to watch next.

Using the averages of your friends is very interesting. The issue would be building your dataset. Attaching it to a network like FB or building it yourself which would take even more time.

fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
I haven't found enough of a need for it at this point to make the application more useful as it stands without making great effort in training the necessary models to assess user-similarity for example.

It is certainly faster to build an expert system that makes a lot of assumptions and iterate from there. There are plenty of use cases for ML and I hope to integrate it more into app some day to help automate repetitive tasks.

fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
Human powered in the sense that the expert system we developed uses those human likes, views, star ratings and implements recommendation features to facilitate humans recommending titles to other humans in a very straightforward way.

But there is no ML compiling a profile of every genre/title you've ever expressed interest in and then using that profile to guess what you want to see next like Netflix et al.

fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
It's a fair point. Netflix for example has a subpar catalog to choose from (maybe 5000 titles max) and of course they are pushing their own content to the top.

By comparison the known movie/tv universe of global movies and tv selections ever made is upwards of 500K.
