fixedd··on The new PHP
In the video on that page he specifically says that if you're writing software at Facebook you're probably doing it in PHP or C++.
fixedd··on T-Mobile Turns An Industry On Its Ear
I had the opposite occur for me. I reported a similar problem and they said they'd dispatch an engineer to check on it. Three days later everything worked perfectly.
fixedd··on The Star Trek Economy
They're fantastic. I got (selfishly) really sad when Mr Banks died as it meant he'd have no more fantastic stories to tell.
fixedd··on Making Remote Work Work
I like Sqwiggle, in theory, but the CPU use and constant camera connection even while it's not in active-recording-mode was annoying... it murdered the battery life on my laptop. Some of my coworkers also found it a little privacy-invasioney.
fixedd··on Making Remote Work Work
Wait till you go to a "Bring Your Own Device" employer.... ugh.
fixedd··on Netflix performance on Verizon and Comcast has been dropping for months
Our Rokus all worked great, until one day around 1.5 years ago, something changed. They are only barely functional at this point. Charter cable here.

Industry specific index funds?
fixedd··on Living in retirement: Seven things I wish I could tell my 35-year-old self
Also, the world is just different now. Where it made fiscal sense to invest before isn't necessarily the same as where it makes sense now.

I know this is a trope, but Citation Needed.
fixedd··on Living in retirement: Seven things I wish I could tell my 35-year-old self
Not arguing for the OP, but you're waging that taxes in the future won't be hugely different than they are now.

The best part about the property-vs-other investments is that if you look at it without the bubbles (read: still not NOW) then property values (as a whole) in North America rise almost lock-step with inflation. Even the simplest of index funds FAR outperforms.
fixedd··on Living in retirement: Seven things I wish I could tell my 35-year-old self
College, in North America, is something that you "have to have" (according to popular thought) and is for-profit, so there's incentive to increase the cost. The costs have catastrophically ballooned just since I went and I'm in my 30s. While I don't think those costs can continue to increase indefinitely, they're certainly bound to rise further.

You can't imagine a scenario where your spouse may find something irritating, but for whatever reason choose to not mention it. Then, after years of daily annoyance, one day decides that it's too much and presents you with an "I thought it would get better, but...."?

Making a blanket statement that one should know how someone else feels is ignoring that the other person may be actively trying to suppress/hide it.

fixedd··on Under Seattle, a Big Object Blocks Bertha. What Is It?
>> "I’m going to believe it’s a piece of Seattle history until proven otherwise," said Ann Ferguson, the curator of the Seattle Collection at the Seattle Public Library

It is exactly what my biases would lead me to believe it is, without evidence, unless you go to the effort to prove otherwise.

fixedd··on Google’s $179 Moto G puts every single cheap Android phone to shame
The Galaxy Nexus was launched in the US 2 years ago today. It was sold until about 1 year ago, by Google. They are refusing KitKat for it due to it being obsolete.

A (barely more than) one-year-old NEXUS phone is obsolete......

fixedd··on Google’s $179 Moto G puts every single cheap Android phone to shame
Point in case: I have a Galaxy Nexus that is fewer than two years old that won't receive any future releases because it's old enough they don't want to bother with.... not that it isn't capable... they just don't want to bother updating devices that are older than X (where X = less than the average contract length in the US).

Smart music services (such as Play) will use this radical new technology called caching so that you don't have to stream everything you listen to if you have things you listen to more often.

fixedd··on Note to recruiters
I don't understand why anyone uses recruiting agencies, honestly. When I was starting out I went to the agencies and they couldn't help me because I didn't have "5+ years in .Net" (the year it was released) and I wasn't willing to lie because I didn't feel comfortable with it. THEN, once I was a little more established, I've had in-company recruiters coming to me with offerings pretty much daily. My LinkedIn profile specifically says to please not contact me with job offerings due to the fact that I'm happy where I am and I STILL get 6-8 offerings a week through that vector alone. I'm not famous, I don't market myself, I'm not an avid open sourcer... I'm simply competent and can show it.

Is this not standard?

Sarah's pretty sharp. IIRC, she single handedly built Linux's USB 3 support.
fixedd··on Meet the NASA scientist devising a starship warp drive
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive#Mass.E2.80.93e...

| In 2012, physicist Harold White and collaborators announced that modifying the geometry of exotic matter could reduce the mass–energy requirements for a macroscopic space ship from the equivalent of the planet Jupiter to that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft (~700 kg)[5] or less,[19] and stated their intent to perform small-scale experiments in constructing warp fields.[5] White proposed changing the shape of the warp bubble from a sphere to a doughnut shape.[20][21] Furthermore, if the intensity of the space warp can be oscillated over time, the energy required is reduced even more.[5] According to White, a modified Michelson-Morley interferometer could test the idea: one of the legs of the interferometer would appear to be a slightly different length when the test devices were energised.[19]

fixedd··on Falling Crime: Where have all the burglars gone?
1) There are enough factual errors in that article to show that the author doesn't know what he's talking about.

2) Small airplanes aren't necessarily expensive, so you don't necessarily have to be rich to afford them. For instance, there's a Cessna 150 in good condition for sale on ebay for $16500 right now.

3) The FAA is actively working on unleaded replacements.

4) Many small planes can already run on unleaded.
