It is exactly what my biases would lead me to believe it is, without evidence, unless you go to the effort to prove otherwise.

That's pretty harmless in this case, the necessity of getting though it means they will have to find out what exactly it is.

Perhaps 'hope' would have been a better choice of word.

There's nothing wrong with saying this. The problem is when you leave off the "until it's proven otherwise" part.
