fiveyearsinarow··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
Our org doesn’t have daily standup. We have weekly meetings but they dial in with camera off. When asked to give updates, they usually mention some small change, being blocked by other teams, or waiting for test result/releases. When you look at their code review, they often take 1 day to reply to comments so each diff could take a few days to submit.

Mostly level 4 SWEs, a few L5s.
fiveyearsinarow··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
There are people who were performing well but had temporary setbacks due to circumstances, and there are people who wanted to coast from day one. It's easy to tell them apart if you have worked with them closely.

As a current FANNG employee, I have seen so many dead weights here, especially the new-hires after COVID. They took advantage of the lenient WFH policy. Some travels around the world for a year; some becomes a social media influencer; some comes up with all sorts of excuse like wife/kids/parents being sick to take unlimited sick day.

It pains me to see how a great company gets abused like this. The cycle to put people on PIP is so long that they can coast at least a year before anything can be done.

fiveyearsinarow··on China’s scary lesson to the world: Censoring the Internet works
...and when GFW has trouble stopping `shadowsocks`, it threatens the author of the software. GFW is not only the technology, which is easy to bypass, but also the system that average citizen cannot escape.

Tor doesn't work most of the time. Not sure about obfsproxy. Here is some reasons why I think Tor is not successful:

+ GFW is very aggressive at detecting these traffic and is okay with false positive.

+ A very very large portion of the population lacks basic skill to setup Tor or similar tools. CS education is almost non-exist or useless if you are not a college student with CS major.

+ Doesn't have good mobile support, especially on iOS.

+ Slow and not stable. Those who know how to set these up, like myself, would probably prefer a more reliable tunnel, e.g. shadowsocks/cisco anyconnect.

Because to establish the tunnel, you need to send some "handshake" packets to the server. Those packets are not encrypted and can be easily identified and dropped.
fiveyearsinarow··on Windows Drops Bing in China for Baidu
MS can 1) push win10 though windows updates(much like iOS) or 2) buy search keyword ads on Baidu. I fail to see how dropping Bing is a better choice, unless MS is getting paid a lot or forced upon by the gov.

Both google.com and google.com.cn are blocked, along with all other country specific Google domains.

I don't think Baidu has that much advantage in its distribution channel to make MS drop Bing. If MS wants a fast way to distribute, it can use torrent like Ubuntu does. It's much faster to download a torrent with Xunlei(Thunder) than with Baidu.
