fiveoak··on How to make Slack less bad for you
Using Slack is like a dream compared to Skype for Business. Sure Slack may have some dumb default settings but Skype for Business finds a way to somehow sabotage 5-10 mins of most meetings with some sort of technology issue.
fiveoak··on Uber’s First Self-Driving Fleet Arrives in Pittsburgh This Month
Sensor quality shouldn't be used to justify driverless cars being safer than a regular person driving a car. It's useless unless the car can actually use it to make a better decision than a human.
fiveoak··on Uber’s First Self-Driving Fleet Arrives in Pittsburgh This Month
Eventually, it might be. However just because the car has better sensors doesn't mean it will react better than a human would with less information.
fiveoak··on Facebook Posts Strong Profit and Revenue Growth
I'd be interested to know how much of that is from political spending during this crazy election year.
fiveoak··on Google Seeks to Pacify Consumers with Faster Mobile Pages
You could also use a subresource integrity check if you are worried about the security but still want to use Google's hosted version.
fiveoak··on GitHub Outage
Seemed to work for me, although it took a while to load and said "All systems operational"

edit: Now says "19:32 Eastern Standard TimeWe're investigating connectivity problems on github.com."

edit2: "19:47 Eastern Standard TimeWe're investigating a significant network disruption affecting all github.com services."

fiveoak··on Math professor forced to use $180 textbook written by his boss
In the picture of the linked article he's clearly holding Strang's book - see a picture of it on Strang's site here: http://math.mit.edu/~gs/linearalgebra/. Also, the campus newspaper reported that the book was Strang's here: http://www.dailytitan.com/2015/10/math-textbook-drives-divid...
fiveoak··on What We Know About the 92M Americans Who Aren’t in the Labor Force
To put it in perspective: there are more people who want a job but aren't looking for a job than there are people in the entire US prison system (2.6 million vs 2.4 million).
fiveoak··on What We Know About the 92M Americans Who Aren’t in the Labor Force
Yep, although it is slightly worrying that there are 2.6 million people who want a job but aren’t looking. If I had to guess, probably a lot of that is due to a lack of marketable skills.
fiveoak··on Math professor forced to use $180 textbook written by his boss
For anyone wondering since I didn't see it in the article, it seems like the $76 book is "Introduction to Linear Algebra" by Gilbert Strang. Not sure about the free book though.
fiveoak··on “Tsundoku,” the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves
I have 100 tabs open right now across 12 windows... I think I have a problem.
fiveoak··on Show HN: Barter Hack – trade your technical skills for other people's
In the US this is incorrect, it's classified as barter income: http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc420.html

"An example of bartering is a plumber exchanging plumbing services for the dental services of a dentist. You must include in gross income in the year of receipt the fair market value of goods or services received from bartering."

fiveoak··on Do Not Disclose Your Salary to Recruiters
In general, it's in your best interest not to disclose it.
fiveoak··on Introducing JetBrains Toolbox
Suggestion: if a customer pays for an annual subscription of the software, grant them a perpetual license for the corresponding major milestone version of that product. For instance if I paid for an annual subscription of IntelliJ in 2015, grant me a free perpetual license for IntelliJ 14.
fiveoak··on Introducing JetBrains Toolbox
It's pretty cool to finally have a discount option to subscribe to all of the JetBrains products. When my existing IntelliJ license free upgrade period expires I'll probably subscribe to the "all products" option. That said, it's a bit upsetting they don't seem to offer corporate perpetual licenses anymore. It's a lot easier to justify the expense when it could be a one-time expense. Suddenly having your critical work tools stop working (for instance, during a budget freeze) is somewhat unacceptable.
fiveoak··on Ask HN: Is This Enough to Get a Job?
Is the source for these projects on GitHub?
fiveoak··on Relaunched TrueCrypt site with original content and documentation
Probably because they can't legally disclose the reason.
fiveoak··on Ask HN: Why would people trust their banking credentials to a service like Mint?
I use Mint, and of course I don't think providing your bank credentials to a 3rd party service is a good idea. That said the company backing Mint currently (Intuit) also does TurboTax, so at least they have some experience with handling sensitive customer data. Also in the event that they did get hacked, there are a ton of other people also using Mint which hopefully will give me time to change my passwords before any real damage is done. Overall it's something I'm not super comfortable about using, but I really enjoy the convenience of having all my accounts in one place, automatically updated, etc, that I'm willing to accept the hopefully small risk of getting hacked.

That said, I still have a hard time convincing others of using the service due to security concerns. I also personally wouldn't really trust a startup/smaller company with my data either since they don't have as much on the line as a larger established company does.

fiveoak··on Bokken – Open-Source Reverse Code Engineering
Pretty cool, I wonder how the features compare to IDA pro. The graph view from the screenshots looks nice.
fiveoak··on SQLite Release 3.8.11.1
A little off topic, but is there any benchmarking software to compare embedded databases? For instance SQLite vs H2.
fiveoak··on World's first white laser
Here's a link to the actual journal article in Nature: http://nature.com/articles/doi:10.1038/nnano.2015.149 (unfortunately probably pay-walled)
fiveoak··on Continuum Analytics Raises $24M Series A for Anaconda Python and PyData
As a Python newbie, Anaconda helped out a lot. Getting SciPy/NumPy/Pandas etc working on a regular Windows machine was a huge pain compared to just installing a single application.
fiveoak··on Now You Can Buy Solar Power from Your Neighbor
Not a bad idea, but I thought ASICs basically killed the profitability of mining on standard computer hardware? Still, if the electricity is free then at least it's something.
fiveoak··on Ask HN: What stationary are you using?
I like using mechanical pencils over pens for everyday notes, although I'm probably in the minority. My goto one is the Uni-ball KuruToga Mechanical Pencil http://amzn.com/B0026ICM1E

There's also a slightly more expensive metal version: http://amzn.com/B004OHNTVC

I have both, but oddly enough I prefer the lighter weight of the cheap plastic one. Just feels more comfortable to write with for me.

fiveoak··on Show HN: A paperless 401k with automated advising built-in
This is really bad advice, especially for young people when they can benefit the most from compound interest.
fiveoak··on Why Are People Still Playing Ultima Online?
I'm surprised the article doesn't mention Ultimate Online's private servers (though I guess their legality is probably a gray area at best). Most of the people still playing UO are on those servers where they're running an older version of the game without many of the later expansions, some even add significant amounts of custom content. Last I checked there were servers that have hundreds, or even thousands of active players.
fiveoak··on Valve has put Ultimate General: Gettysburg on the Steam store main page
> Look at the whole Hatred debacle. Some people think it's the most offensive game of all time and should be banned, but Gabe himself came out and said that that's no reason to pull the game.

Someone at Steam did initially pull it off of greenlight though. Gabe re-added it later.

fiveoak··on Remote Code Execution in Elasticsearch – CVE-2015-1427
FYI, it looks like this was released ~3 months ago on Feb 17th of this year: https://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2015-14...
fiveoak··on Functional Programming in Haskell by Examples
Nice reference. It's interesting how intuitive the examples are even though I've never learned a functional programming language before.
