fivefive55··on At $75K, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard
He'll be in his early 50s. I know plenty of men at that age that could crush me regardless of what statistics say otherwise.
fivefive55··on Google hit with €1.5B fine from EU over advertising
So you set it to $1000. Now the parents are still late and also argue about the insane fine, so you get no money and end up staying later than you would have anyway arguing with the parents.

How about instead of a fine you give the kids to CPS. You go home on time, the late parents never come back, or if they do they're never late again, and you win.

I guess the point is that monetary punishments don't seem to work when companies can consider it as 'cost of doing business.' If we start taking away the company's hypothetical metaphorical children when they're late to pick them up then they have a reason to listen.

fivefive55··on Epic’s Stunning RTX-Powered Ray-Tracing Demo Wows GDC
Probably, yes. The only issue I see with that is the fact that Raytracing is only supplementing current rendering methods, not replacing them yet. The performance is not there yet. In a few generations we might see fully raytraced games, but not for a little while I would guess.
fivefive55··on Google is reportedly shutting down its in-house VR film studio
Windows Mixed Reality headset is your best bet in my opinion. I just got a Samsung Odyssey+ for $300 dollars. It has the exact same high res oled screen as the vive pro, and it only has an HDMI and USB 3.0 connector. Doesn't even require external power. Worked right out of the box for me with Elite as well and looked amazing. So much clearer than my Vive.
fivefive55··on Tesla to raise prices and keep more stores open
You're definitely right, it is getting to the point of semantics when it comes to comparing the high end of internal combustion to electric. I mean, even very old diesels could hit their peak torque in the 100s of rpms. Even still though, a couple 100ms to full torque is still more than literally instantaneous torque with electric. That also applies to the 'low end' electric cars as well. They're really good at getting your head to snap back into your seat, but once you're moving the benefits really drop off a cliff. Just like the torque and hp 'curve'(cliff) of an electric car actually.
fivefive55··on Tesla to raise prices and keep more stores open
It's not so much 'lag' that people notice as much as the torque roll on. Even a supercar doesn't deliver 100% torque the second you hit the throttle, the RPM has to build to increase the torque, hence the reason torque and HP are on a curve. Electric on the other hand has ALL the torque available ALL the time. Generally they actually have to limit it for takeoff otherwise every Tesla would just roast the tires if you slammed the throttle.
fivefive55··on DRAM Prices in ‘Freefall’
Haswell actually uses ddr3 unfortunately, and it's becoming a bottleneck for me personally in a few cases now. Otherwise I totally agree though.
fivefive55··on DRAM Prices in ‘Freefall’
I just found this subreddit yesterday, seems right up your alley.

fivefive55··on $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Available Now
And now they're getting rid of showrooms, so that isn't really relevant anymore.
fivefive55··on Why Does My Remote Control Need to Know My Location?
Any reason you don't support Android? This sounded like a perfect solution to have a physical button to control my smart lights, but then I realized I can't use it.
fivefive55··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
I hate this attitude. My super cheap budget android phone isn't getting updates, obviously the only solution is to switch to an iPhone that costs 4 times as much. Never mind that there are also Android phones that get updated just as long for the same price as the iPhone. Clearly all Android devices are absolutely identical no matter the price.
fivefive55··on Nasa’s Mars Rover Opportunity Concludes a 15-Year Mission
The cost of failure is even higher.
fivefive55··on Sprint sues AT&T over its fake 5G branding
They did the same thing with 4g. I had friends in high school with HSPA+ phones and they suddenly got an update to '4g'. Total lies, it was like 3mbit speedtests. Then we got real LTE and it was an order of magnitude faster.
fivefive55··on How A Young Woman Followed Two Hackers' Lies to Her Death
That's all you got out of this? Wow. Way to be ridiculously narrow minded.
fivefive55··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
"10 years ago when reddit would go down, you rooted for them as the underdog to figure it out. Now when it happens, it's just sad. They still can't even handle the kind of traffic that the super bowl brings them. They've had years to figure this out."

Reddit goes down pretty rarely and I can't remember when it was ever down more than an hour or two. It also definitely didn't go down for the SuperBowl that I saw.

The rest of your points are fair though.

fivefive55··on Right to Repair is already hurling into action in 2019
You call yourself a tinkerer yet you have no idea what the implications of losing right to repair is. Kind of disturbing to have that knowledge and still have this mentality.
fivefive55··on AMD is edging closer to breaking Nvidia's graphic dominance
I'm sorry, but this just sounds like bullshit to me.

"With a $5000> card (MI50) AMD is forced to sell at a loss to be able to meet the same performance levels NVIDIA had for the same amount of money ($700) 2 years ago."

Source? What 2 year old nvidia card is beating the instinct mi50 at floating point math? Does it even support fp64? Nothing about that sounds even a bit true.

"The 2080 for all intents and purposes is a mid range die."

The second fastest gpu in the world is 'mid-range'. Yeah right. Not even close unless you only consult with millionaires for your part info.

"AMD had to drop the prices of VEGA to around $300 due to the RTX 2060"

Vega 64 competes with the 2070, it blows the 2060 out of the water. Also the price has gone down? Yeah, that's what happens when tech gets older. Prices drop. They always have and always will.

fivefive55··on 5G: if you build it, we will fill it
I'm amazed at how bad the 4g coverage is in the bay area. I barely get a signal at my house or at my office. One's in the middle of a city, the other is literal minutes from Google. Yet I get a single bar of reception. It's a sad joke..
fivefive55··on Google cans the Chromecast Audio
How is that risky? They're discontinuing the hardware, casting isn't going anywhere. Unless you're one of those people that would be offended by someone getting your gift on sale.
fivefive55··on AT&T defends misleading “5G” network icons on 4G phones
Donovan just sounds like a crook gloating about how he got away with robbery. Telecoms are just so awful.
fivefive55··on Marriott Concedes 5M Passport Numbers Lost to Hackers Were Not Encrypted
That doesn't sound any worse than losing your social security number.
fivefive55··on Users report losing Bitcoin in clever hack of Electrum wallets
Thanks for all that personal info, while your at it why don't you just tell us that private key too?

Seriously, you're here asking about security but you're giving us all your details. Your gmail is even known. Security through Obscurity is a real thing, and you've just painted a huge multi-million dollar target on your back.

fivefive55··on Star Citizen: The Road to Release, Financials and New Partners
Wow, that's pretty wild, I figured they would be pretty common. I probably would never sell it anyway, but maybe it'll be worth even more by the time the game actually comes out. lol
fivefive55··on Star Citizen: The Road to Release, Financials and New Partners
Is that ship really worth that much? I also have an AMD Mustang Omega. I knew it would be special someday!
fivefive55··on US Surgeon General Declares E-cigarette Epidemic Among Youth [pdf]
That is true, the concentration is higher. But you get a lot less vapor so it evens out. Think about the people who blow clouds the size of cars. Even with 3mg nic the volume of vapor makes the difference.
fivefive55··on Adblock filter rule list modified politically in Finland
I've been noticing this a lot more lately. Lots of websites have broken elements from my adblocker. I have to turn it off and reload the page to get those elements to load. A lot of the time they aren't even close to ads, it's like a drop down menu or button that doesn't render.
fivefive55··on Presidential Alerts

fivefive55··on How to Build a Low-Tech Website

fivefive55··on How to Build a Low-Tech Website
This looks great! That was my one complaint about the site, the meter looked like a broken element. I figured out what it was pretty quickly and I love the concept, but it just didn't look quite right.
fivefive55··on NYC Mesh – community-owned network to replace your current internet connection
This is still true as of last year. Comcast was the only viable option.
