fisherjeff··on PID Control Challenges
Ugh, nerd sniped on a Sunday. Great.
fisherjeff··on CFPB kicks off rulemaking to remove medical bills from credit reports
I mean, getting sent to collections sucks regardless of whether it affects your credit score - see, e.g., patio11’s recent blog post[0]. If you don’t pay, chances are you will still regret it.

fisherjeff··on FTC has named Amazon staffers accused of approving tactics designed to confuse
Ah, first time at el Reg? Think we’ve all been there.

EDIT: Speaking of AI, yes, it turns out that ChatGPT can do a halfway decent impression of The Register… No uses of the word ‘souk’ though

fisherjeff··on Geographic ‘hot spots’ for cigarette and firearm deaths in the U.S.
Very interesting but not a great map for us color deficient types!
fisherjeff··on The washing machine in my ear, and an empty boat
To be fair, lots of things have been reported to cause tinnitus.

And from what I can tell, nearly all of the handful of cases in clinical trials that have actually been studied were very temporary.

fisherjeff··on The Story of “How About Never” (2014)
Okay it’s not Ebert’s but I have to say that “O.K., let's slowly lower in the grant money” from that first link is nearly Gary Larson-tier humor, IMO.
fisherjeff··on Show HN: Going into freshman year, figured I should build an interpreter
I suppose this is one of those things where people’s experiences vary widely, but FWIW after 20 years of writing C/C++, I can count the number of times this has bitten me on one finger. And even then, I still think it was more likely just an optimizer bug in the god-awful compiler.
fisherjeff··on Ask HN: Is it possible to get a conversation with a CEO from here?
I am tempted to say this is the most important aspect.
fisherjeff··on DOJ sues SpaceX for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring
According to the complaint, if I’m understanding this press release correctly, all SpaceX applicants were required to be citizens or permanent residents, even those without access to controlled items.
fisherjeff··on Reverse Engineering the Apple Multipeer Connectivity Framework (2022)
“Moreover, while sending crafted packets and attempting all sorts of things, I’ve discovered several vulnerabilities in the Apple custom made parsers. I will not discuss them here (exception made for the session spoofing) but at the same time I’m not interested in reporting them to Apple…”

Erm, hope they’re not super serious I guess?

fisherjeff··on UPS driver pay and benefits deal in US to be worth $170k a year, firm says
To clarify, because it wasn’t immediately apparent to me, this is over a 5-year period so the average annual increase is just over 3%.
fisherjeff··on We are pleased to announce that DreamBerd has been renamed to C
“You can make classes, but you can only ever make one instance of them. This shouldn't affect how most object-oriented programmers work.”

Incredible

fisherjeff··on The Sad Bastard Cookbook
Would also add Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything: The Basics to this list
fisherjeff··on Plans develop for high-speed rail in the PNW
Yep. Half live in the Portland and Seattle metro areas alone.
fisherjeff··on Telegram raises $210M through bond sales
I mean for one thing, a cursory look at the bond market right now shows callable bonds outnumber non-callables 10 to 1.
fisherjeff··on Telegram raises $210M through bond sales
Eh, I’d be surprised if the bonds weren’t callable.
fisherjeff··on “The Famous F40” Vector Illustration
Strong The Duel: Test Drive II vibes in this post
fisherjeff··on Hipólito Mora, vigilante crusader against Mexico’s cartels, killed in ambush
I mean yeah, there are loads of good reasons to not be addicted to drugs.

Now if only those pesky addictions would listen…

fisherjeff··on Leo Tolstoy on why people drink (2014)
Took me way too many years to understand this
fisherjeff··on Ask HN: What are some of the best Reddit alternatives?
I can only comment on homebrewing but in my experience, local homebrewing clubs exist and are usually way more fun than Reddit
fisherjeff··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
I don’t mean to imply I think he could - or even necessarily should - stop the changes. Just, if you’re going to be CEO and make a big change you need to be a great communicator and… well yeah.
fisherjeff··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
Okay, maybe Reddit should just buy Apollo and make Selig CEO. Just incredible how much better of a communicator he is than Huffman. Low bar, but still.
fisherjeff··on Anchor Brewing Company ends national distribution, kills Christmas Ale
Fair but as one of those windsurfing adjacent types myself, I’d call that more like a 25/75% split…
fisherjeff··on Anchor Brewing Company ends national distribution, kills Christmas Ale
Okay now I’m trying to guess where you live that you could say you’re halfway between Portland and Bend. Unless… do you drink a lot of Ice Axe?
fisherjeff··on Earth's rotation, with the camera locked to the sky instead of the ground
Love watching the shadows, it’s like they are being pulled down by gravity
fisherjeff··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
I think the thing is that a ton of people are using crypto as speculative investments and an exchange facilitates that, especially once it layers leverage and derivatives on top.
fisherjeff··on SEC Sues Binance and CEO Zhao for Breaking US Securities Rules
I could be wrong (not a lawyer) but I don’t believe there’s a scienter requirement for unregistered offerings. Regardless, it makes the case much tighter, and will give the SEC a ton more leverage to reach a settlement.
fisherjeff··on Nvidia Started in a Denny’s. Now It’s Worth $1T
Ok wow, now see this kind of behavior is exactly why I never go to Waffle House, except for when I do
fisherjeff··on Nvidia Started in a Denny’s. Now It’s Worth $1T
If something good ever started in a Waffle House, that would for sure be newsworthy
