firstfewshells··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
And who exactly is putting this pressure on women? Most men would choose a healthy, fertile woman over a career oriented one. I do think it's women that are taking on the pressure themselves in their quest to have it all.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: What to do about underperforming coworker
How is a coworker dragging you down? You just do your own work? Leave it to the manager to deal with it. Now if you're the manager, then I'd say you should question yourself if you really should be one if you can't deal with such a common situation.
firstfewshells··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
That's where the visa holders come in. They have no choice but to continue working for Twitter or else risk deportation.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: Where are all the mechanical engineers?
Thanks for sharing! Lots of cool stuff on your website.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: Where are all the mechanical engineers?
Not related to mechanical engineering, but I always wonder why there is such less discussion of real world product design. It's almost like we take stuff for granted. What type of degree would one need to develop a career designing stuff like lunch tiffin boxes or shoes or the other hundreds of myriad things we use in daily life? So many people seem obsessed with CSS and JS here.
firstfewshells··on Meta Is Preparing to Notify Employees of Large-Scale Layoffs This Week
Don't speculate. And what does "stay safe" even mean? Unless you mean stay safe from folks making baseless insinuations.
firstfewshells··on Meta Is Preparing to Notify Employees of Large-Scale Layoffs This Week
Usually they retain the top performing employees. If the entire org is shelved, such employees are moved to another org.
firstfewshells··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
The most productive engineers I've known all crank out a ton of code in any week. It's almost like an addiction for them to push commits on a daily basis.
firstfewshells··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
How many hours out of a 40 hour work week are you mentoring junior engineers?
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: How do you prioritize Job offers by money and interest?
I go with the one offering the best WLB, pay and cool coworkers. Most of the times, you can take up interesting initiatives at even seemingly boring places.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: How to find an in-office tech job
The OP asked a simple question. I don't understand how you got the idea that they want everybody else in their team to join them. I guess folks get triggered at the very mention of RTO these days.
firstfewshells··on The Millennials in Sexless Marriages
Porn has consistently shown to short circuit dopamine pathways in our brains. As a result, real world sex feels too vanilla and there is always a craving for something novel. Lots of men have porn induced ED.
firstfewshells··on Snap Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
Too bad the LC hard folks can't seem to revive it now.
firstfewshells··on Meta announces hiring freeze, warns employees of restructuring
They announced a hiring freeze at least a couple of months back. Not sure why this is making the news now.
firstfewshells··on Temporal raises $103M in Series B funding
How is this offering different from AWS Step Functions? Looking over their docs briefly, see lots of similarities like Workflows, state management, concurrent executions, retires etc.
firstfewshells··on Launch HN: OneChronos (YC S16) – Combinatorial auctions market for US equities
I will consider myself an accomplished person the day I'm able to understand this post :)

No offence but tbh, when I read through this, I felt a deja vu of coming across another Theranos. Some super innovative sounding complex tech which ultimately turns to be a total dud.

firstfewshells··on Stop requiring specific technology experience for senior-plus engineers
Folks complain about LeetCode. Folks complain about requiring experience with specific technology. Folks complain about take home project assignment. Folks complain about too many interview rounds.

The general sentiment seems to be, "Oh, I have XX years of experience and the world owes me my next job with a 25% increment, 4 weeks of PTO and fat RSUs".

firstfewshells··on Facebook settles federal lawsuit over allegations it favored foreign applicants
I think you're living in a bubble if you still believe foreigners working at FAANG are underpaid compared to the native population. You are paid as per your level.
firstfewshells··on Mindat.org, the largest open database of minerals, rocks, and meteorites
I always wonder what kind of data modeling is used in such websites.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: What was the biggest leadership challenge of your career?
Are you preparing for an upcoming interview?
firstfewshells··on When did writing in major newspapers become so bad?
All newspapers in India have reduced the number of pages in their print edition by 30-45%. The paper with the highest circulation in India, The Times Of India, has become so commercial it's now known as the The Ads of India. Every front page and literally every second page has either full page or half page ads. The quality of the journalism is abysmal with super shallow articles and grammatical errors. The websites of the newspapers are even worse with headlines always revolving around cricket and entertainment. In fact, some regional news websites have "Ask the Sexpert" on their main page. It's a cesspool.
firstfewshells··on Coursera S-1 IPO
React course offered by Stephen Grider and data science course offered by Jose Portilla on Udemy are good.

Generally, looking at the number of students enrolled and the rating of a course gives a good idea on quality.

firstfewshells··on DigitalOcean S-1
They've accrued up losses of $43M, $40M and $35M in the 3 preceding years. Funny how that's considered financially healthy in the world we're living right now.
firstfewshells··on Noise pollution hurts the heart
Well, I hope you never have to travel to India where people honk when the red light is on. Why? Coz they're bored and they "want" the light to turn green.
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: Decade-long plan to FIRE starting just under age 40?
"Paid by the company they work for" probably means people pay off their mortgage, car loan etc. via the salary that their company pays them.
firstfewshells··on Robinhood, Trading 212 and others go down amid AMC and GameStop stock frenzy
Where is this information available?
firstfewshells··on Ask HN: How have your recent job application experiences been?
I feel this industry has attracted a lot of run-of-the-mill folks whose primary motivation is to get a high paying job at any cost. They're willing to memorize 500+ LeetCode problems in the hope that in one out of 100 interviews their stars will align and they'll be asked questions which they've seen before. More often than not, such folks tend to be crappy engineers and crappier interviewers. Supply is outstripping demand by quite a lot even though the supply is low quality.

firstfewshells··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
I doubt FAAG base pay would be 95th percentile for level 4 Software engineer wage. A sizeable chunk of the compensation is in equity which doesn't count when benchmarking prevailing wage against employee pay.
