firloop··on Apple rejects Puffin Browser on iOS
Apple's App Review guidelines used to say something along the lines of "If you have a problem, trashing us in the press never helps." I'm not trying to place judgment on Puffin, but this seems to be the wrong strategy. False negative App Store rejections are typically due to a misunderstanding than a nebulous "corporate greed" angle... or sometimes they were even (at least sort of) justified in the first place [0].

See also: when Rollout got rejected, their open letter [1] didn't help them either.

firloop··on HomePod arrives February 9, available to order this Friday
SiriKit has specifically scoped "intent domains" for acceptable usage and music controls aren't one.

firloop··on HomePod arrives February 9, available to order this Friday
>Coming this year in a free software update, users will be able to play music throughout the house with multi-room audio.

Interesting that a key feature that the competition already has won’t be shipping at launch. I wonder if this is related to the Homepod’s previous delays.

firloop··on Changes to the YouTube Partner Program
Is YouTube even profitable? Even if they are, it seems like the only reason cost could be "reasonable" is because they piggy back off of being Google scale (co-location, negotiated bandwidth rates, global network of self-hosted data centers). Not to mention the network and aggregate effects of having an existing ad market and user profiles for targeting ads.

One could probably mitigate high operating costs by charging for the service or limiting who can post on the site. But I think these two factors greatly contribute to YouTube's monopoly status.

firloop··on LinkedIn is ignoring user settings
I did this strategy just today with privacy.com which isn't a credit card at all but bills your bank account directly.

firloop··on Bundle Phobia: find the cost of adding an npm package to your bundle
I would love a version of this where you could paste in your package.json and it adds up all your dependencies and offers suggestions of popular dependencies that can be removed.
firloop··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
Scroll way down on this page https://blog.patreon.com/updating-patreons-fee-structure ... apparently people were getting confused by the batched charges
firloop··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
Fair. It's true that they didn't announce the unbundling until after the initial wave of complaints.
firloop··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
It didn’t really seem like Patreon was making significantly more money from the new model, fees were higher because they chose to no longer batch charges. The fact that this belief is so widespread is a major testament to Patreon’s failed messaging.
firloop··on How to get your first 100k active users
The OP wasn't talking about users, but rather best practices on how to get the App Store makers to feature you. I've heard the App Store editorial team specifically give the "go native" advice.

It's definitely not required, it just helps. Our app got featured in one of the App Store's daily stories despite it being written in React Native.

firloop··on Cinemark announces $8.99/mo. subscription to fill more seats, take on MoviePass
To be fair, Moviepass only allows standard 2D movies - no premium formats either. So that's at least the same between the programs.
firloop··on Cinemark announces $8.99/mo. subscription to fill more seats, take on MoviePass
Not necessarily. Movie tickets in San Francisco run about $14-18. I pay $9.95 for MoviePass, so even if I see a movie every 6-7 weeks, I still come out ahead.
firloop··on Cinemark announces $8.99/mo. subscription to fill more seats, take on MoviePass
Seems like this is the direction the industry is going, however the actual service here is much worse than MoviePass' (seemingly unsustainable) model. MoviePass is $9.95 for one movie per day.

FTA:

>...customers who pay a monthly fee of $8.99 will receive a credit for one movie ticket a month. Subscribers can also buy additional tickets for $8.99 each and get a 20% discount on food and drinks.

firloop··on Google Blocks YouTube Access from Amazon's Streaming Devices
Amazon took all products that can't stream Amazon content off their store.

Google Cast players can't stream Amazon content because Amazon hasn't implemented the Cast SDK in their app.

Amazon doesn't implement the Cast SDK because their flavor of Android eschews Google Play Services which is required for the Cast SDK on Android.

Google doesn't license the Google Play Services to Amazon because....

firloop··on Ciao, Chrome: Firefox Quantum Is the Browser Built for 2017
To implement Cast support in an application, you have to link a closed source binary to your project. Google only provides binaries for iOS and Android (via Play Services), and has a closed source implementation in Chrome.

firloop··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
I don't believe there's any way to turn off the wifi from Control Center, even with 3D touch. You must flip the toggle in Settings (TFA seems to say the same thing). Happy to be wrong here, I just couldn't figure it out while fiddling with it.
