firloop··on Instagram is gaslighting Pixelfed, the open source federated alternative
If you try to put a link to Telegram or Snapchat in your Instagram profile, Instagram will tell you that it's "not supported".

It's very simple; Instagram doesn't support using their network to grow another network, and it's tiring when people pretend like this is something new.

firloop··on How to Read MySQL EXPLAINs
I know the blog post has MySQL in the title, but one point I'll add for those of us working with Postgres: writing it as `EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS)` adds buffer hits to each line of the output. I've found that valuable to reveal what parts of a query are hitting the hardware the hardest and there's seemingly no reason to not add buffers to the output each time.
firloop··on How to Read MySQL EXPLAINs
This feels like a low effort comment that you could likely post on most engineering blog posts on the home page.
firloop··on Ask HN: Are people considering moving off of Fly.io?
We're likely going to move off of them. Last year we were using their Wireguard "peering" feature to connect our RDS DB (as recommended by their blog)[0].

This feature had a multi-hour outage, and when we wrote in for support, we were told "[t]he Wireguard peers are intended to get you development access to your network. We didn't really build them to handle inter service communication that affects uptime. The gateways we run wireguard peers on are not redundant."

We stopped using the feature (using Tailscale instead), but in my opinion, that directly contradicts the spirit of their blog and docs, and it really left a bad taste in our mouth. We're probably going to move to Render or something similar soon.

firloop··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2023)
Context | Infrastructure engineer | https://mint.fun | Remote (American time zones) | Full time

Context builds software and protocols to help people explore and interact with web3. Our flagship product is https://mint.fun, an aggregator of what NFTs are releasing on the primary right now on Ethereum.

Let me try to explain to the HN audience why working on mint.fun is really interesting.

We use Go and Postgres to index all NFT related Ethereum transactions. While NFTs have standards, there's no standard for purchasing an NFT – every NFT is contained in a smart contract, which is just a computer program! Without having access to source or ABI, we do a lot of clever tricks like tracing (but with specific optimizations to make it 100x faster) to intuit how to interact with NFT contracts. Put differently, we generate UI for smart contracts without having source code.

The current way we measure our success is based on our market share of new NFTs minted on Ethereum, and a meaningful % of all new NFTs on Ethereum are minted from our interface.

We're looking for infrastructure engineers who love reverse engineering and getting their hands dirty on meaningful projects. Lots of fun tricks to make our product work well, such as using Postgres partitions to query large datasets instantly, and as alluded to before, tracing Ethereum function calls 100x faster than the status quo.

Context is a small team (4 people) and we've raised $19.5m. We have years of runway and we're looking to grow our team slowly and thoughtfully. Please reach out if these problems sound interesting to you - we have a lot to build and we can help you learn if you're newer to blockchain related problems.

If you're interested, please email jobs@context.app with code that you're proud of.

firloop··on Interchange in 1k Words
Maybe on the acquiring side, but on the issuing side in the US, definitely not. Most interchange flows to the issuing bank. Issuing banks fund lucrative reward programs with those fees. American consumers love credit card points.

I think we're more likely to see a new payment method disrupt credit cards than to have interchange fees go to zero.

firloop··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang
Little bit of a nit on the title if the author is reading this. Go is called Go, not Golang.

firloop··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
I have the animations off entirely, be warned though, it requires disabling SIP which is a non starter for many corporate environments.

If you install yabai[0] with its scripting addition, you can configure hotkeys to change spaces with no animations. It's pretty powerful, and I have specific keybinds[1] to do things such as transition to a space with a specific application running.

firloop··on Twenty five thousand dollars of funny money
Worked somewhere with an admin tool that did something similar. The code had denominated money in cents, except for the Japanese Yen, which has no cents so the number used was just the number of yen. After someone refactored some related code, for a short period of time Japanese users got refunds 100x the amount they were supposed to be.
firloop··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Hacker News is great precisely because it is very much _not_ a free speech paradise.
firloop··on Audiobooks on Spotify
As a consumer, I’ve actually come to prefer in app purchases. I love when a subscription is available on IAP because for something like a newspaper, I know that I can cancel it with a couple of taps instead of having to fill out some long retention form or call someone.
firloop··on Macwright.com redirects HN readers away
I'm grateful it's not traumatizing like Jamie Zawinski's HN redirect.
firloop··on Tell HN: Citus is 100% open source now
Not just Postgres extensions, most of Postgres’ own administrative functions can be triggered in SELECT statements. e.g. pg_terminate_backend()

firloop··on DuckDuckGo email protection beta now open
This is cool - but I feel like to do this well you need to co-mingle valid and masked emails on the same domain. Otherwise services can and will prevent folks from signing up with @duck.com emails.

Apple does this well with their email masking service; all emails have an @icloud.com domain, the same as primary emails. A service can't simply block @icloud.com without blocking millions of primary/default addresses.

firloop··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
Feels like sort of a non issue, even the bottom of the page pushes people to apps like Whatsapp/Signal. If Google wants better iPhone messaging - can’t it just ship its solution in the App Store? Not really sure why Apple must update iMessage for Google to get what it wants.

I personally love iMessage and use it and Signal primarily - I don’t like the idea of Google dictating its feature set, especially considering its horrible messaging track record.

firloop··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
Less than a month ago, Vitalik Buterin deposited 220 ETH into Tornado Cash.

firloop··on I 10x'd a TI-84 emulator's speed by replacing a switch-case
Wonder if that benchmark still holds true for Golang. Go 1.19 (released last week) includes jump table optimizations for switch statements.

firloop··on High property taxes are good
This article doesn't provide any reasons why a property owner should want lower property taxes; why would you want to constrain prices and prevent speculation?

I don't own any property myself and am sympathetic to the idea of raising property tax, but many arguments for LVT/raising property taxes don't paint a convincing argument for why property owners should vote against their self interests.

firloop··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
Postgres can do it, you're correct, but in my experience it rarely happens with any view that's even slightly non-trivial even on recent versions of Postgres. Most views with a join break predicate pushdown. It greatly reduces the usecases of views in practice.
firloop··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
Views can really bite you performance wise, at least with Postgres. If you add a WHERE against a query on a view, Postgres (edit: often) won't merge in your queries' predicates with the predicates of the view, often leading to large table scans.
firloop··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
Jarred's been working on bun for over a year. I don't get the sense that it's a reaction to anything recent at all, Jarred is just super passionate about building the best JavaScript runtime.
firloop··on NextDNS API
I’m planning on building this sort of functionality with the iOS Shortcuts and the NextDNS API. Very excited about this.
firloop··on Amazon calls cops, fires workers in attempts to stop unionization nationwide
Jeff Bezos is no longer the CEO of Amazon. I wonder if that changed anything.
firloop··on Apple Passkey
Yup, I think the bigger announcement today is around it becoming available on non-Apple devices.
firloop··on Researchers demo Bluetooth relay attack against Tesla
Pretty sure turning on Keyless driving is separate from unlocking/starting the car with Bluetooth. To do it requires the Tesla account password and I believe is relayed via the LTE connection of the car.
firloop··on $3B in Bitcoin was sold in a last-ditch attempt to save UST from collapse
Minor nit but Terra isn't a protocol on Ethereum, Terra is its own L1 that competes directly with Ethereum.
firloop··on Ask HN: Why is Google Premium not a thing?
Advertising CPMs vary wildly between geographies and demographics. GP’s point is still valid: even if average global revenue is $10/mo/user, the average revenue of the group that would pay $10/mo is likely much higher.
firloop··on $34M permanently locked into AkuDreams contract forever due to bad code
That's not quite right. We're talking about the type of the integer, this doesn't have anything to do (directly) with cryptography. It's a bit of a silly decision but Ethereum uses uint256 for many things to avoid having to do floating point math.
firloop··on Announcing a16z crypto research
Clearly a response to Paradigm funding much of the best crypto research. Hoping that, like Paradigm’s efforts, this actually leads to meaningful new research and public goods.
firloop··on Twitter accounts dropping “.eth” from usernames
This list isn't accurate. I'm in the list (@worm_emoji) and I have .eth in my display name still. Spotchecking reveals a few other friends with .eth still in the display name are on this list.
