What was his explanation?

Why should he care to provide one? Honest question.

Why do you need an explanation for seeking privacy?

Guilty until you can prove your innocence?

Sadly a good portion of HN thinks blockchain is only used for money laundering and will be completely fine with this subversion of rights

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unexplained_wealth_order ; the US does this via in rem actions e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._$124,700_in_U...

More generally, see https://news.sky.com/story/us-cryptocurrency-developer-jaile... ; it was inevitable that as the value involved in cryptocurrency increased, it would reach the threshold where "no you are not allowed to provide aid to enemies of the United States" became a serious consideration.

Property transfers are not a private matter. Not if you want the world to respect your property.

Possibly got tired of random people tracking what he did with his ETH, like parent just did.

The irony of cryptocurrencies destroying anonymity always makes me laugh, given the original claims of the opposite years ago.

The point of this aggressive sanction was that Tornado Cash WAS an easy way to anonymize crypto.

To get around the fact that anybody could track your every transaction on ETH, rather than just your bank or CC company and the IRS.

Getting cash out of your bank account is also an easy way to anonymize.

Monero preserves privacy and anonymity. No one can see where money comes from, where it's going or even how much is being transferred.

US treasury tried to sanction a Monero wallet and ended up sanctioning a transaction hash.
