firesteelrain··on How to buy a good car for $1000
This is framing it as a false binary. People need to take personal responsibility. They can walk, ride, bike, phone a friend, relative etc

So yes it is surprising and wrong

firesteelrain··on How to buy a good car for $1000
Poverty may explain uninsured driving. It doesn’t justify making everyone else eat the risk.
firesteelrain··on How to buy a good car for $1000
It’s a deterrence and enforcement mechanism. Because if you get pulled over, you might go to jail in some states.

Texas needs to be stricter about this and start suspending licenses
firesteelrain··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
I can’t run HP or Super Micro in my industry.
firesteelrain··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
You can use the PowerEdge however you want. No lock in to VMware for VxRail, OpenShift, Azure, Nutanix etc

firesteelrain··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
It’s not their Cloud, you buy a bunch of PowerEdge R7725 for example and then choose between OpenShift, VCF and one other I can’t remember at the moment.

It’s on prem

Nexrad? NOAA?

We run a lot of ESXi with vSphere (part of overall VCF solution). It works very well. But I am part of Big Corp. so they don’t mind paying. We are good via warranties etc using what we already purchased. I don’t know that I share the same sentiment that we could have just used ProxMox. We are a Dell heavy shop and there is a new Dell Private Cloud product that is very promising. More like choose your own adventure.

Are there other alternatives to UBI in solving this problem?
firesteelrain··on Gateside by TSA Precheck
Yea I was thinking the major airports like Atlanta, Orlando, Denver, etc that are usually slammed
firesteelrain··on Gateside by TSA Precheck
This is great.

But airports are super busy and crowded these days. Imagine all the extra people if everyone took advantage of this

I don’t remember how it looked back in the day when you didn’t need Gateside.

firesteelrain··on Using floci to emulate Cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure)
I had to dig in (based on the title) to realize this was emulating or stubbing out the Cloud providers logging interface. I was thinking this was a replacement for Azure Stack Hub SDK or ASDK.
firesteelrain··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
I believe it when I see it that Claude will be allowed again. There will still be that national security clause that will stop anything and the courts can’t prevent it.
firesteelrain··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
You are forgetting the labor of maintaining it to include backups and offsite backups.
firesteelrain··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
You are certainly free to attempt to migrate your workloads to your own or leased data center space in your area then buy your own on prem cloud like Dell Private Cloud and deal with all of the maintenance yourself. I don’t think it would amount to $100k/yr and you would be taking on all the risk.

> Silicon Snake Oil book, as soon as it came out, which he - himself - publicly claimed to have been in error, in parts, sometimes, but about which I now think - looking at X, TruthSocial, TikTok, etc. - that may, in fact, has been premonitory...

It wasn’t really premonitory. More technophobic. It’s understandable in 1995 to have written it as few could envision what we have today.

firesteelrain··on What Is a Syslog Server?
Syslog supports TCP and UDP? We run dual Syslog servers and support both protocols
firesteelrain··on What Is a Syslog Server?
In our case, other than network switches and routers, Syslog is the log of record and Splunk runs on all the VMs. Splunk isn’t forwarding syslog itself
firesteelrain··on OTel isn’t going well
I’ve built custom Prometheus metrics very easily and had node exporter pick up the .prom files. Python and bash scripts reading and translating.

Node exporter runs on my Prometheus server next to Blackbox Exporter. Blackbox Exporter handles TLS expiry metrics.

firesteelrain··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Everyone’s situation is different. It can be done.
firesteelrain··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Okay it sounds definitely regional/State specific. Some states are more flexible such as counting work hours towards volunteer hours and allowing ACT/SAT/alternatives.

How old are you? Wife has been stay at home mom since 2006. And that was when I made $40k/yr.
firesteelrain··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
This must be a State thing.

> she was up at 6:30am, in AP classes by 7:30am (three more to go during the day). Classes were done by 3:00, then sports practice until 5:00.

In other States, high school starts later like 8:45/9am. You can take classes online and start school later if you want or do dual enrollment and skip later periods.

> Gotta have that activity on your college application, not counting other volunteering and clubs in the open spaces.

Mine worked and were in clubs. Kids are remarkably resilient. In some States, work time counts in lieu of volunteer time.

> Then you have test prep (APs and the ACT/SAT), college applications, writing essays and scholarship applications, college tours, sorting decisions, financial aid applications, etc etc etc. And now her college already has a few hours of orientation videos stacked up for her to watch before she moves in.

This sounds like a lot of undue pressure. UCF didn’t make you do that. ACT or SAT works and you have a couple years to do it. Not all at once in Senior year and you usually can composite your score across the highest tests.

firesteelrain··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
I was not on this flight but another one during this time on Monday (Delta flight out of ATL).

Delta came on the intercom and was directed to reboot WiFi and screens across their fleet. Maybe unrelated but seems coincidental
