I reverse engineered The Palace, created Phalanx for BHLabs.

firebot··on Tangled – We need a federation of forges
The problem with GitHub is from ... we all know it...

AI.

They're working on the scaling issues apparently due to huge demand.

firebot··on Super ZSNES – GPU Powered SNES Emulator
Yea, I read the article.

I'm concerned with all there 'super enhancements' while claiming far more accurate processing. Back in the day accuracy wasn't really possible with playable performance. These days I would hope they'll really try to go for fidelity and accuracy.

But eh, there's plenty of accurate emulators out there so it might be fun seeing where they go with these super enhancements. Sounds like they're implementing some kind of sprite editor?

firebot··on OpenAI misses revenue, is the AI bubble bursting?
Gustafson would hard disagree with you, while Amdahl shares your pessimism.

I think Gustafson has better receipts... His main argument is that software will update to take advantage of new parallelism in hardware. And that's definitely been the case.

AI has ridiculous levels exploitable parallelism. It'll scale up and out.

firebot··on PyWry: Cross-Platform Rendering Engine in Python
Site is rendered extremely poorly on Firefox Mobile.
firebot··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
Install anyapk. It uses a wireless ADB bridge to install whatever you want.
firebot··on Super ZSNES – GPU Powered SNES Emulator
This was always my favorite emu. No problems on a Pentium 60 MHz.

Plus you can make your own cheat codes!

firebot··on How does GPS work?
Triangulation.

Saved you a click.

firebot··on It's OK to compare floating-points for equality
You probably don't need the (in)accuracy.

Fix your precision so it matches.

You only need so many significant digits.

firebot··on Traders placed over $1B in perfectly timed bets on the Iran war
Most gamblers prescribe to the cost sunk fallacy and keep 'one more time'ing it to bankruptcy.

Math wins over your feels every time.

firebot··on Trying for 1 month but can't learn pixel art still
You just need to practice.

Pixel art takes a shit ton of time.

firebot··on Claude Code users hitting usage limits 'way faster than expected'
The first hit is free.
firebot··on Polymarket gamblers threaten to kill me over Iran missile story
That's when you just gotta kill yourself. Can't kill what's already dead.
firebot··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
Just so you're aware.

A cow releases maybe about 50 kg of methane a year.

An average human releases about 20 tons if they're in a first world nation or maybe 4 tons if they're living in the middle of fucking nowhere.

firebot··on Are the Mysteries of Quantum Mechanics Beginning to Dissolve?
Compatibleism is when you have both free will and determinism.

What you seem to prefer is libertarianism.

firebot··on AI uBlock Blacklist
Firefox already feeling more responsive.
firebot··on The full history of Windows widgets, from 1997 to today
Yea, it was based on afterstep. But for Windows. I first used it in Windows 95. Cuz explorer was an unstable piece of junk.
firebot··on The full history of Windows widgets, from 1997 to today
LiteStep introduced these in much more interesting ways than explorer ever accomplished. First released in 98, but worked fine in 95 as well.

You could have them in the wharf(preferred IMO) or more standard widget styles.

firebot··on The largest number representable in 64 bits
In the spirit of floating points, I'd say posits offer an excellent insight into the trade-offs between precision and accuracy, while being meaningfully representative of a number system rather than some arbitrary functions.
firebot··on Hacking Moltbook
Failure is treated as success. Simple.
firebot··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
Oh come on fanboy, Apple doesn't have meaningfully better hardware, consumer trust, or app selection (for most people the opposite is true!)

Oof, Apple adopting core 'Android' features... Yea, finally? Increasing iOS market share? Where? Not most places

I think it's weird you come at this from an antitrust angle when I would totally make the argument the other way.

If there's pressure to remove this feature, then it's from companies that make apps that anyone can pull up in Revanced and they can patch it and can be running a version of a piece of software that shouldn't exist with "premium" features enabled. I don't think there's an argument against it really besides that. At least not an honest, intelligent argument....

Ultimately, I doubt many would jump to Apple. Inertia would insist: People just won't upgrade. Which is already occurring, people are keeping their devices longer, especially Apple users. And they wonder why their battery stops working... Oy vey!

firebot··on What Happened to Abit Motherboards
My first, last and only Abit was the KR7a-RAID. Along with a phenomenal Athlon XP and that sweet DDR.

Good memories.

firebot··on An off-grid, flat-packable washing machine
Many washers will pause if the lid is open.
firebot··on Why do we need dithering?
We really don't anymore.

Back in the late 90s maybe. Gifs and other paletted image formats were popular.

I even experimented with them. I designed various formats for The Palace. The most popular was 20-bit (6,6,6,2:RGBA, also 5,5,5,5; but the lack of color was intense, 15 bits versus 18 is quite a difference). This allowed fairly high color with anti-aliasing -edges that were semi transparent.

firebot··on GPS 'kill' switch allows state police cruisers to go dark and disable tracking
GPS works on triangulation. You need inputs from multiple satellites. Yes, clearly you can just ignore those signals.
firebot··on How did I get here?
Yup. Those paths are cached bidirectional.
firebot··on Bringing a decade old bicycle navigator back to life with open source software
I just keep my phone in my pocket and use voice navigation.

Also carry a power bank and chargers.

Airplane mode will also save lots of power.

firebot··on Bringing a decade old bicycle navigator back to life with open source software
Not really? You just select brouter in osmand. Make sure you select the correct profile for brouter. Server mode engages and it just works. Sure, you also need to download the tiles for brouter.
firebot··on Bringing a decade old bicycle navigator back to life with open source software
Osmand(fDroid) + brouter

Best offline navigation there is. You can even customize your navigation profiles.

firebot··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
works fine here, though it says it "may soon no longer be supported"

Edge store doesn't even mention that, in fact it's featured.

I switched to edge canary on my phone because the dev options allow you to install extensions by id/crx, which I've used to get ublock origin, though it crashes sometimes, and doesn't work when you reload the whole browser, until you refresh the page or manually reactivate the extension....

firebot··on Difference in Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk and Mortality by Dietary Patterns
AIDS really has nothing to do with this discussion. Most scientists believe in imaginary deities. So what? Does that mean God exists? I doubt it. Moving on.

Consensus isn't science. By consensus, then olive oil is "high in saturated fats."

The major problem with saturated fats is there is no problem. There's no mechanism to explain it. It's just an association.

Dr Enid correctly identified trans fats as unhealthy decades before the consensus caught up.
