fireball_blaze··on Going Dutch
Apple is requiring developers to use the following flow in their apps if they opt out of using Apple's payment processing:

Title: This app does not support the App Store’s private and secure payment system

Body: All purchases in the <App Name> app will be managed by the developer “﹤Developer Name﹥.” Your stored App Store payment method and related features, such as subscription management and refund requests, will not be available. Only purchases through the App Store are secured by Apple.

Action 1: Continue

Action 2: Cancel

fireball_blaze··on Being spied on by the makers of Pegasus, then lured them into a trap
What % of web users surf the web without JS turned on? (Honest question, I don't know.)

And if this % is very tiny, does it make sense for devs to devote time developing an experience for this rare edge case?

fireball_blaze··on Apple just fired a leader of the AppleToo movement
"Janneke Parrish was terminated for deleting files off her work phone, including the apps Robinhood, Pokémon GO, and Google Drive"

Umm, what? Truly bizarre reason given. I would think Apple could give a more plausible reason to cover themselves for retaliation for organizing.

fireball_blaze··on Apple Announces 'Unleashed' Event to Be Held on October 18
Our long national nightmare of the touch bar is about to be over.
fireball_blaze··on Facebook’s attempt to smear the whistleblower
Some of those could also be said of Snowden, but he found some impactful, explosive material.
fireball_blaze··on Facebook’s attempt to smear the whistleblower
The point the author is making is that the rebuttal has very little substance. The signal to noise ratio is low.
fireball_blaze··on Facebook’s attempt to smear the whistleblower
"If the best Facebook can come up with is this disgusting attempt at character assassination, Haugen is telling God’s own truth. We should listen to her."

A pretty powerful closing statement IMHO.

fireball_blaze··on Facebook's Response to Drug Cartels and Human Traffickers Is Weak
> Company researchers in 2019 set up a test account as a female Indian user and said they encountered a “nightmare” by merely following pages and groups recommended by Facebook’s algorithms.

> “The test user’s News Feed has become a near constant barrage of polarizing nationalist content, misinformation, and violence and gore,” they wrote. The video service Facebook Watch “seems to recommend a bunch of softcore porn.”

> After a suicide bombing killed dozens of Indian paramilitary officers, which India blamed on rival Pakistan, the account displayed drawings depicting beheadings and photos purporting to show a Muslim man’s severed torso. “I’ve seen more images of dead people in the past 3 weeks than I’ve seen in my entire life total,” one researcher wrote."

Facebook's default content consumption mode is to create a nightmarish experience. FB doesn't care as long as those ad clicks are working ok.

fireball_blaze··on Facebook's Response to Drug Cartels and Human Traffickers Is Weak
The more important part of the title is "The Company’s Response Is Weak, Documents Show."
fireball_blaze··on Why does NBC make it so difficult to watch the Olympics?
On the modern Olympics: it helps to remember that it is now an advertising event that happens to have sports competitions.

fireball_blaze··on Pee bottles, constant monitoring and ignoring stop signs: Driving for Amazon
Amazon gets singled out because they are one of the largest, most powerful companies in the history of mankind, by almost any measure: market cap, revenue, employees, etc.

UPS is not.

Amazon wields immense power over multiple industries, and they are scrutinized as such.

fireball_blaze··on Ring provided 100 LAPD officers with free devices to influence adoption
Surely you aren't comparing people's expectations of a gun manufacturer versus Amazon?

fireball_blaze··on Facebook’s Zuckerberg Drops Off Top CEO List, Glassdoor Says
It's telling that it took until 2021 for Facebook's own employees to come to terms with Zuck. Not a lot of self-reflection or awareness happening there, it appears.
fireball_blaze··on Amazon blames social media for struggle with fake reviews – Amazon
Amazon: “While we appreciate that some social media companies have become much faster at responding, to address this problem at scale it is imperative for social media companies to invest adequately in proactive controls to detect and enforce fake reviews ahead of our reporting the issue to them.”

Way to pass the buck Amazon. You created the walled garden. Do a better job of weeding it.

fireball_blaze··on I Would Rather Die Than Let Facebook Monitor My Heart Rate
If this device was truly selling well or exceeding Facebook's expectations, they'd be yelling it from the PR department constantly. That one 10X data point they mentioned has zero context and is unsubstantiated enough to be ignored entirely.
fireball_blaze··on AWS hired 66 former US gov officials since 2018; half are from Dept of Defense
Curious -- based on what? Compared to other cloud providers? Compared to the normal # of gov officials at Seattle-based tech companies like Microsoft? As a % of overall work force?
fireball_blaze··on AWS hired 66 former US gov officials since 2018; half are from Dept of Defense
I disagree entirely. The title I employed is exactly what the article is about.
fireball_blaze··on AWS hired 66 former US gov officials since 2018; half are from Dept of Defense
The HN title character limit is very restrictive. The title I used is the max length.
fireball_blaze··on Why the ransomware crisis suddenly feels so relentless
I think you're hinting at a Broken Window Fallacy [1] here. I disagree that these cybercrimes are a net positive for the world.

fireball_blaze··on Google Joins Apple to Opt-out of Mobile Advertising IDs
Wow, then yes -- this is a non-story.
fireball_blaze··on Google Joins Apple to Opt-out of Mobile Advertising IDs
Why would people use a Facebook browser?

And Facebook already launched a phone of sorts, with HTC in 2013. Huge flop.

fireball_blaze··on Google Joins Apple to Opt-out of Mobile Advertising IDs
On 1, I don't think it's a contradiction. It's opt-in by default, and to actually find the setting to opt-in, it's buried deep in the Play Services settings. That's how I read it.
