fireant··on Bernie Sanders: "AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear"
Well it's not like AI investment money is coming out of thin air - ultimately normies are buying stuff that AI enhanced companies produce which allows those companies to feed this money to the actual winners/1% that truly benefits. I don't think that it's fair to say that AI has been only negative to the normies, when they need to be the ones willingly feeding the beast with their money for the whole thing to perpetuate.

That said I obviously also see a bunch of negative consequences, and perhaps agree that the negatives outweigh the positives.

Gamedevs are vehemently against genai art, but code generation seems more accepted from what I've seen
fireant··on Axios compromised on NPM – Malicious versions drop remote access trojan
While it's true that the packages are first party, .NET still relies on packages to distribute code that's not directly inside the framework. You still probably transiently depend on `Microsoft.Extensions.Hosting.Abstractions ` for example - if the process for publishing this package was compromised, you'd still get owned.
fireant··on Go hard on agents, not on your filesystem
It's true that it takes 2 seconds to fasten a seatbelt but it still had to be mandated by law before most people started actually doing it
fireant··on Hold on to Your Hardware
16MB is less than a display buffer for a 4k display. It is never ever going to happen again just due to hardware realities.
fireant··on After outages, Amazon to make senior engineers sign off on AI-assisted changes
Do you add these into the code or into the review itself? I sometimes write these into the review, but I wonder if it's a useful information that should actually be inside the code that will get lost when the PR is merged
fireant··on Cloud VM benchmarks 2026
I've gotten notices from Hetzner for hosting IPFS node, apparently it does some local network discovery by default which looks like a malware when you squint hard enough.
fireant··on GPT-5.4
Don't forget that some of the new features are mutually incompatible. For example couple years ago you couldn't use the "new ui system" with the "new input system" even when both were advertised as ready/almost ready
fireant··on Graphics Programming Resources
As someone who's learned Vulkan to a fairly deep level over the last two years I've found learning with LLMs invaluable, especially for explaining concepts and the whys behind things.

That said debugging graphics bugs has to be some of the hardest things you can do as they generally manifest as driver crash followed by VK_DEVICE_LOST error. Vibe debugging these inside a 60k vibecoded rust renderer is... just not possible.

Agents can get you the initial boilerplate for setting up most of the resources, but are completely clueless about subtle issues with synchronization, transitions, formats and so on.

fireant··on Layoffs at Block
Doesn't that make people with best opportunities (most skilled workers) leave and people with least opportunities (least skilled workers) stay?

Personally if I was offered 6+ months of severance I just couldn't justify staying even in the best companies I've been at.

fireant··on Hetzner Prices increase 30-40%
You joke, but I remember seeing a talk by Wunderlist CTO who has pretty much that. Also polyglot company and microservices in random languages. Can't find the talk now, but https://www.infoq.com/news/2014/11/gotober-wunderlist-micros... mentions 60 services at least.

KYC data is the most dangerous data that can leak right now. If your CC leaks, you will know almost immediately and can revoke it and generally will get your money back. Password leaks can be neutered with 2FA. Medical data leak can perhaps be used in a complex extortion, but generally for most people this data is worthless.

KYC data on the other hand allows third party criminals who have bought your KYC on the black market to perform money laundering in your name (by opening bank accounts) and taking debt in your name. Generally you won't even know this is happening until it's too late and debt collectors come. And it's not like you can revoke your biometrics/liveness check/selfie and who knows if revoking your passport/id card would actually work.

IMO it's much better if a dedicated KYC processor, like Persona, with actual security team/mindset, handles this rather than random website inside their zendesk instance. But there still needs to be extremely strict regulation surrounding this data.

Also while CC data will be getting less dangerous over time due to AI fraud detection and mandated 3DS, KYC data will IMO be getting more dangerous over time because more fintech/govtech will rely on it.

You might consider crypto debit card services - you load up crypto and can use it like a normal CC
fireant··on Tailscale Peer Relays is now generally available
I think that biggest difference is that your client applications don't need to be explicitly configured to use the bastion server. For example ssh, web browsers, rdp, samba and so on can just pretend that you are inside the target network. Doubly useful if this is a "customer" network and you are working with multiple customers.
fireant··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
Oh wow, the guy used the word "versatility"... he even dared "narrative" and "just" - the latter one two times! Astonishing, does he have no shame copy pasting this obvious AI slop? It is obvious that no person in their right mind would utter such things!
fireant··on The Overcomplexity of the Shadcn Radio Button
But that's just classically styled library like bootstrap? How is it in any way similar to shadcn where you copy the component definitions to your code and restyle them with tailwind? It looks visually similar, but completely misses the point of why someone would use shadcn. Also many of the components have degraded functionality on firefox, I couldn't use this in an actual production application.

Personally I also tend to hate on what React has made the modern web, and I say this as someone who's made money for the past 10 years making React apps, but reimplementing half of something poorly and declaring success because it looks kinda similar when you squint is just silly. Many (most?) "pure html frameworks" are like this unfortunately.

I also wonder about it recently. Also in regards to Rust which is hailed as the great savior but has the same, minimal, approach to standard library and needs loads of dependencies.

LunarG is working on first party Vulkan driver for MacOS https://www.lunarg.com/lunarg-achieves-vulkan-1-3-conformanc.... My understanding is performance is worse than MoltenVK at this point, but it's getting there.
fireant··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
I don't think that more minutes of contact is better for anybody.

As a patient, I want to spend as little time with a doctor as possible and still receive maximally useful treatment.

As a doctor, I would want to extract maximal comp from insurance which I don't think is tied time spent with the patient, rather to a number of different treatments given.

Also please note that in most western world medical personnel is currently massively overprovisioned and so reducing their overall workload would likely lead to better result per treatment given.

fireant··on Replacing a $3000/mo Heroku bill with a $55/mo server
GPU memory model quite different from CPU memory model, with application level explicit synchronization and coherency and so on. I don't think that transparent compression would be possible, and even if it would surely carry drastic perf downside
fireant··on Migrating from AWS to Hetzner
That isn't the same as parent through, you are comparing VMs instead of dedicated servers
fireant··on OpenGL: Mesh shaders in the current year
This is the real killer feature of Vulkan/DX12, it makes writing generalized renderer so much easier because you don't need to batch draw calls per vertex layout of individual meshes. Personally I use Buffer Device Address for connecting Multidraw Indirect calls to mesh definitions to materials as well.

I just wish there was more literature about this, especially about perf implications. Also synchronization is very painful, which may be why this is hard to do on a driver level inside OpenGL

I've turned on fastmath in python numba compiler while thinking "of course i want faster math, duh". Took me a while to find out it was a cause of many "fun" subtle bugs. Never touching that stuff again.
fireant··on HTTP/3 is everywhere but nowhere
LINQ in EntityFramework certainly isn't perfect, but frankly it's so far ahead of anything else available in all other languages. It was a brilliant idea to add expressions type into the language AND to create a standard set of interfaces that enable collection interop AND to to then create universal clients for local and remote collections that use all this machinery to deliver first class DX.
fireant··on Infinigen
It looks great, but I'm missing what's innovative about this? AAA procedural folliage has been done for 20 years, terrain too. Blender has had procedural geo nodes for a long time too. What is so interesting here?
fireant··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference (2023)
I've bought used 3090 last year for ML and while it works fine, has correct DRAM and stuff, when I tried gaming on it I've noticed that it is significantly slower than my 3080. I'm not sure if the seller has pulled some shenanigans on me or the card actually degraded during whatever mining they did.

Just beware, the card might be "working fine" on a first glance, but actually be damaged.

fireant··on "Hetzner decided to cancel our account and terminate all servers"
People on HN refuse to see this being an option in these discussions. Is either "cloud" or "build and manage your own physical rack inside a colo housing"
fireant··on A comparison of Rust’s borrow checker to the one in C#
Pangui seems really cool. Especially since it's from people developing Unity plugins so we could get good GUI for games too.
