fire··on Twitter employees are sleeping on the office floor to meet Elon Musk’s deadlines
So, if a deadline is given under threat of firing, is that considered creating a hostile workplace? Like, enough to file a lawsuit against?

If you're given an impossible deadline, that your peers all agree is impossible, and are under threat of firing, is that considered constructive dismissal?

It just sounds so insane to me that there wouldn't be some sort of regulatory mitigation against this type of "demand under threat of firing" thing

fire··on Wiring my home with fiber
what's the big difference between single and multi mode fiber? Why is it scalable but multi-mode isn't?
fire··on Show HN: Jerrica, a 100% scheduled, Web Audio native, MOD player for JavaScript
I wonder if this is due to how background tab javascript execution is restricted when not in focus
fire··on How to request removal of your contact info from Google search results
Doesn't mean they need to require a google account to provide that info though; It definitely costs more to maintain a good privacy portal, which is probably why the companies I've seen do it either list an email address in their privacy policy and handle it ad-hoc, or they use one of the P/S-aaS providers that handle the portal ( and the concerns with owning the data for the types validating documentation people provide )
fire··on Maintaining sufficient free space with ZFS
do you have more info on this? I'd love to read a blog post about it. Are there any performance implications to doing ( or not doing ) this?
fire··on Replit Mobile App
I'm excited for this; the performance for me on android is shockingly poor right now, but I'm hopeful.
fire··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
oh yeah swiftkey did clone the feature more recently!
fire··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
iirc this is a google keyboard feature specifically; it was added sometime after the pixel 3 released, I think?
fire··on Amazon’s attrition costs $8B annually according to leaked documents
What does WITCH stand for here? Haven't seen that acronym before
fire··on Magical Handler Functions in Rust
...oh dear
fire··on Magical Handler Functions in Rust
I wonder if macros are a type of magic that can be reasoned about more sanely than other types of magic?
fire··on FindThatMeme – Search Millions of Memes in Seconds
This is actually fantastic
fire··on VS Code Org Mode
This honestly looks pretty interesting, and reminded me of Obsidian more than anything; I wonder what the level of effort would be on inter-compatibility between this and obsidian projects ( obsidian has a nice mobile app, which would be useful for bridging the gap back to vscode on a full machine )
fire··on VS Code Org Mode
me: "why is wasmorgy a problem

... ...

oh"

fire··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
lol I'm not sure where I learned it but long ago I was taught to write out numbers that are ten or less, and this is probably the first time I've seen a case where it would have actually prevented confusion
fire··on Beware of Bun.js
to be clear, this isn't my take.
fire··on Beware of Bun.js
it might drive some skepticism toward long term support or reliability ( everything has to be developed three times ) and unknown performance characteristics ( or even potential behavior ) across platforms.

not sure I agree with the take, but that's how I read it

fire··on Prusti: Static Analyzer for Rust
Nice, followed you on both
fire··on Prusti: Static Analyzer for Rust
what's your twitter/gh? Could you add them to your hn profile?
fire··on Prusti: Static Analyzer for Rust
> my effects system compiles to a seccomp + apparmor profile so that your rust program is sandboxed at runtime based on info at compile time.

is this open or proprietary? I'd love a link to a repo

fire··on Artificial superstrong silkworm silk surpasses natural spider silks
I actually don't understand how they do tensile strength testing between steel and silk - doesn't silk stretch or yield?
fire··on The Alternative Genesis Block of Bitcoin
yeah I do it in comments because the present me is not the only one that'l be reading them. Future me is basically a totally different person as far as my commenting is concerned
fire··on Show HN: I made an open source Chrome extension to notify you of new HN replies
Are there any guidelines on how hard you can actually hit the Hacker News API?

( It looks like your backend is hitting it every five seconds; is that per user? )

also am I just too cynical these days or is this kind of just an ad for their notification infra SAAS?

fire··on Ditto: Real-time sync for apps even without the internet
slightly o/t: do you have any stats for end to end latency between n number of nodes, and between the different connectivity types? I'm curious how workable this would be for a game with real time logic.
fire··on Maigret: Collect a dossier on a person by username from thousands of sites
hah, I thought it sounded like sherlock[1] and lo, it's a fork!

can't find a comparison of them though; any idea how they differ?

fire··on Learn TLA+
perhaps I'm missing the intent, but would it be feasible to have formal verification specifications like with TLA+ act as a blueprint for generating machine code?

It would be fairly cool to be able to design a system using tools like this and have a way to translate it without the possibility of introducing errors during translation to code.

Perhaps what I'm thinking is more automatic generation of test cases? But I'm not quite sure what my brain is trying to watch onto here.

fire··on Ditto: Real-time sync for apps even without the internet
I don't have an iOS device but I'm looking forward to seeing this on other platforms!
fire··on Ditto: Real-time sync for apps even without the internet
Do you think it'd be possible to use your mesh network layer as a generalized network transport? e.g., I have ethernet, wifi, and BLE devices, and the BLE device is able to access the network and/or internet via one of the other two devices?
fire··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
just fyi the author's pronouns are they/them ( they're in their twitter bio )
fire··on Refreezing Earth's poles feasible and cheap, new study finds
lol I feel like this is more or less exactly what led to the earthwide frozen wasteland in Snowpiercer
