finspin··on Ask HN: What do you look for when choosing a conference?
Good one, thanks!
finspin··on Ask HN: What are tools for writing test case documents?
I would recommend automating these kind of tests using a test framework. If you do it right, the scripted tests will also serve as a documentation. Look into tools like Robot Framework, Cucumber etc.
finspin··on Untangling Jenkins
I'm currently looking into how JJB could be used for simple scheduled jobs. But isn't the setup described in the article basically the same what you can do with Jenkinsfile?
finspin··on Connecting a Git Repository to Amazon S3 and AWS Services
Regarding private git repo, have you looked into Bitbucket? They offer unlimited free private repos. I've been using them for about half a year, very happy so far.
finspin··on Show HN: Ever wondered what's that icon on your colleagues's computer?
Thanks for the feedback and the screenshot! Yes, there are only a few icons on the site currently, I just wanted to show the concept and get feedback before I put more effort into that.

I haven't even heard of the term menulet, will look into this.

finspin··on Show HN: Ever wondered what's that icon on your colleagues's computer?
Author here. When I'm at a meeting and a colleague of mine is presenting something I often wonder what's that app they have in their menu bar. But I rarely ask because I don't want to interrupt the presentation and by the end of it I usually forget.

So I put together this simple page listing a few apps. For now it's macOS only and only has a few icons. Any comments?

finspin··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Congratulations! How did you promote the books? What would you say was your most effective promotion channel?
finspin··on Ask HN: How do you choose a name for your product / service?
Here's a story by one of the founders on how Stripe came up with the name https://www.quora.com/How-did-Stripe-come-up-with-its-name
finspin··on Ask HN: How do you choose a name for your product / service?
Wow, you can write a whole book on the topic! Lots of good info in there, thanks for sharing.
finspin··on Ask HN: How do you choose a name for your product / service?
Yes, that's what I've been thinking too. The only thing that holds me back is that I'm going to put a lot of effort into promoting the product launch and generate traffic to my domain. If I switch the product name (domain) later on, all the effort might be wasted. I know I can redirect the old domain to a new one but still, backlinks might lose some weight.
finspin··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
This is a great angle I haven't thought of. I'm guessing passively looking candidates might be quite a big chunk of the market. Given a financially interesting offer they might apply for a job which they would otherwise just skim through.
finspin··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
Great, I'll be in touch! :)
finspin··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
Absolutely! Public company email is mandatory, I didn't even consider having a job ad without it. Good point about the application form, it sure makes the applicant feel like just another record in a database.
finspin··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
I'm thinking that launching just another job board won't get me anywhere. I'll have to either a) spend heavily on advertising (which I can't afford) or b) differentiate myself from all other job boards out there.

I live in Finland (5 million habitants) and based on my research only about 5% of job ads include salary. It's not part of the culture to discuss salaries publicly so it's very well possible that companies won't be willing to go public.

On the other hand, I think it's quite promising that there are even a few companies that are already publishing their salary offers, despite most of the competition not doing it.

I see it as my job to convince them it's good for their business and start a little revolution. Maybe others will join the bandwagon?

finspin··on Ask HN: What is your favorite podcast?
At the moment it's http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/podcasts/
finspin··on Materialistic – Ad free, open source Hacker News client
Do you have the navigation animation on? When I turned it off the scrolling got much smoother.
finspin··on Finnish Carrier Sets New World Record for 4G Download Speeds
Not really an issue in Finland since the standard mobile phone plan comes with unlimited data.
finspin··on Show HN: Intro – Easy way to intro yourself
I attended a big conference this week and met a lot of new people. Very few of them carried business cards so we ended up exchanging emails. I typically closed the conversation with something like "Hey, it was great chatting with you, would you mind exchanging emails?". And then I would launch my Gmail, ask for their email address, enter some dummy subject and send it. Having an app with some quick intro where all I need to do is enter an email address would be much more handy.

Any plans for making an Android version?

finspin··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
OK, now it should be visible.
finspin··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
Yes, sure. Feel free to hit me up on my email, it's in my profile.
finspin··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
My weekend project is a script which tracks prices of used cars which I'm interested in and saves the data to a Google spreadsheet. It will also notify me via email if price for a car has dropped. I'm about half-way done.
finspin··on Vkontakte Founder Flees Russia
Snowden didn't flee to Russia. He was on his way to South America, transiting through Russia, when the USA revoked his passport, forcing him to stay in Russia.
finspin··on An effective eye drug is $50, but many doctors choose a $2,000 alternative
In Finland this is handled in pharmacies. Pharmacist will always inform you if there is a cheaper alternative to the drug you've been prescribed.

finspin··on Ask HN: Any good online webdesign courses?
Thanks, I'll check it out. What I want to learn is to design beautiful user interfaces for web applications.

finspin··on Show HN: My weekend project on curating relevant deals
I believe this kind of service would work better as an email newsletter. I wouldn't mind receiving a weekly/biweekly email with hot deals relevant to my interests. I think you should push deals to the people (i.e. email) instead of pulling people to the deals (website). A bare minimum would be an RSS feed although I think email would work better in this case.
finspin··on How I Made $350 In Two Days With Three Pages and Some Payment Code (2011)
The article is 1.5 years old so it's possible that the website doesn't exist anymore (the domain is still actively registered though).
finspin··on Non-Technical Questions To Ask When Hiring A Development Firm
- Can I see what you’re doing on my project on a daily or weekly basis?

- Can I adjust my feature set and specifications as we go?

- Can I meet and work directly with the designers and developers on my project?

This is called Agile development. If you are not doing Agile in web or mobile project, you are doing it wrong (some exceptions might apply).
