finiteseries··on Former Xinjiang prisoner arrives in U.S. as key witness to abuses
The US isn’t comparable to other countries given its position in the world, and every single other country’s relative weakness in it.
finiteseries··on Why Remotion is a native macOS app, not Electron
Users don’t consciously care about 99% of UI and UX, the entire field is at some level the art of ensuring they continue not to care, not to notice.
finiteseries··on Why Remotion is a native macOS app, not Electron
I’ll be following along, hopeful you’ll publish more specifically on hiring as time goes on.

Would also love any other recentish articles about hiring macOS developers if anyone’s got em.

I’m very bearish on native macOS after the most stereotypical “worse is better” experience in the late 2010s working on a macOS (now electron) product, but am increasingly reconsidering.

It’s too early to say and I’m too cynical to anyways, but it’s starting to feel like the release of the M1s really has injected a bit of life and taste back into the scene.

finiteseries··on Ask HN: I want to make a native UI for macOS. What do I use?
From a UX standpoint, Swift & AppKit is the only “proper” way to make a native UI for macOS at this current time.

SwiftUI is a mobile focused framework still being adapted to macOS, I think it’s just gotten tables this year? And even the best Catalyst app in the world (craft.do) will sit somewhere in between Electron and uncanny valley at times when it comes to things as simple as a button.

I would highly recommend using AppKit if the app is even slightly nontrivial and fit and finish is a goal.

If it’s a simple app and you’re ok with visual hitches and oddities but would like a native macOS “skin”, SwiftUI.

If fit and finish isn’t important, just use Electron.

finiteseries··on Ride a Bird scooter. Have an accident. Pay a mighty price
That would be borderline malicious and factually incorrect.

Bird is claiming he consumed a large amount of cognac the night before with no BAC test, and cannabis was found in his urine with no possibility of dating ingestion.

The article isn’t paywalled, you can literally just read this in there BTW.

finiteseries··on Man, 19, jailed for racially abusing Marcus Rashford on Twitter
You can lie about whichever public figure you want in the US provided they can’t prove you acted with actual malice in a court of law.

Hate speech isn’t equally as harmful, but does apply equally to non minority groups.

“Often”, “might”, “hopefully”, “wishful” is a bit too academic for free speech discussions in the US, I’m afraid.

finiteseries··on Global music market grew by 18.5% in 2021, driven by paid subscription streaming
Outside narrative driven / sports / blue planet level stuff, isn’t a huge part of TV just YouTube/Podcasts/etc now? Curation and everything built in.

I was led to a oddly human travel show and watched it go from a few thousand to millions of subscribers over the past couple years, they were recently on the Ukrainian / Russian border the day before the invasion talking to locals and ended up leaving on a refugee train in 1080p60, 3+ million views.

Questionable character I don’t want to promote and some of the episodes I don’t want to be associated with, but that’s tvesque isn’t it?

Repeat for true crime, history, cooking, children, educational, political commentary, informercials…

finiteseries··on Madeleine Albright has died
Garbage in garbage out, this is the definition of TV news political content that shouldn’t be posted here.
finiteseries··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
It’s that you’re alone in a room with a screen strapped to your face looking at pixels instead of seeing, touching, feeling, smelling, hearing, sweating, dancing, and sensing in the middle of a rave of physical human beings

It’s literally senseless in comparison, lossy digitalization of basic analog humanity ie dystopian

finiteseries··on Ask HN: Book Recommendation for macOS Development
Every single Mac focused developer I’m aware of started pre or around 2010 as well, including me, for a reason.

Riding a peak in a self admitted niche market all the way down and then recommending it to others as you yourself exit your career isn’t evidence, it’s irresponsible.

The simple fact you had a book on Cocoa programming written in the past decade (and official programming guides, offline/online discussion groups, WWDCs with more than a handful of events) should tell you something about the relative difference in the market since then.

finiteseries··on Ask HN: Book Recommendation for macOS Development
There aren’t any, the market for native Mac development is too small to support a good published book.

You will be spending inordinate amounts of time in the Documentation Archive reading still applicable (and well written) docs, on S/O reading the ~3 threads that relate to your issue, blog posts from ~2010 and a whole lot of time searching specific APIs w/ GH code search to see how a repo from 2014 used it. And you’ll be alone in time and space if you’re not at a co while doing it.

Web developers are far more common, far cheaper, and far better supported by the ecosystem, you can literally just plug and play them entirely unlike eg iOS developers -> AppKit.

If this is a personal thing, have fun it’s very rewarding. If this is business/career, either learn Mandarin or turn around now, there is no hope or future here.

finiteseries··on The case for induction cooking
I’ve always wondered how Italians will handle the transition when it inevitably happens, that tilting & just a ton more movement in general over the flame seems super common there
finiteseries··on China markets in turmoil as Russia ties add to list of risks
The UK doesn’t suffer from either of food or energy insecurity and only has 68 million people with decent demographics.

There are more people over the age of 65 in China than the total population of the UK and France combined.

finiteseries··on China markets in turmoil as Russia ties add to list of risks
There are 1.4 billion people in China, and ~1 million immigrants pre pandemic. The number of new migrants required would be astronomical in a country already struggling with food and energy insecurity.

It takes 20 years to make a 20 year old consumer while the rest of the population ages 20 years.

Seems a bit optimistic and wishy washy to say the least.

finiteseries··on China Plans to Feed 80M with ‘Seawater Rice’
The nation has one-fifth of the world’s population, and that many mouths to feed, with less than 10% of the Earth’s arable land.

If China can be more self-sufficient in staple foods, it would be a contribution to the world's food security too,” said Zhang. “The less China imports, the more other countries will have.

“Chinese food security is world food security” is a thing, absolutely rampaging across markets over the past few years.

Along with diversifying fertilizer production outside geopolitically active areas (including China), an increasingly food secure China would be a simply absurd boon to world food security as we enter an era of less than stable supply chains.

finiteseries··on Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil and gas output immediately
I used the numbers they didn’t bother to check from their [2] link.
finiteseries··on Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil and gas output immediately
Federal lands provide <10% of oil, gas, LNG each, it will be purely political.
finiteseries··on Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil and gas output immediately
Populated Canada is significantly smaller in population and area, uses fuel & emissions standards from the US (NA auto market), and also has very cheap $4 gas.
finiteseries··on Namecheap offers free, anonymous anti-Putin/regime hosting
If anyone actually considered Russians and Belarusians war criminals and human rights abusers by accident of birth outside melodramatic Internet comments, Namecheap probably wouldn’t be offering them literal free service in the linked Twitter thread.
finiteseries··on Why the Ukraine Crisis is the West's Fault (2014) [pdf]
To my understanding it doesn’t ignore international law so much as singlemindedly focus on the forces and interests that “truly” drive it and are inherent to nature, ie global anarchy navigated by power/security concerns.

“Anarchy is what states make of it” is a great search phrase to pull on this thread with to say the least.

finiteseries··on Putin orders Russian peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions
Europe depends on Russian energy to keep the heat on in winter.

US refineries have replaced sanctioned Venezuelan oil with a Russian type bumping them up to a very respectable 10% of oil imports.

The US is also responsible for its own security, not the other way around.

finiteseries··on Valencia's irrigation system is now a model for sustainable farming
1:1 it fundamentally can’t if it ties markets to local production in much (most?) of the world, it’s everything else I’d be concerned about scaling!
finiteseries··on Building for the 99% Developers
Tools actually intended for building non bloated, non complex CRUD apps. Django, Rails, Laravel, .NET, Spring, I can go on.

Instead Go was selected, templating HTML by hand, and assumedly doing nearly everything else by hand well. That is not the optimal solution for a simple CRUD app’s implementation, and isn’t reflective of anything but poor engineering.

finiteseries··on Democratise Big Tech
Put municipal authorities in charge of the worker coops in charge of the airbnbs and UN special agencies funded by Big Tech tax levies & UN contributions in charge of the not-for-profits in charge of the googles is the extent of the discussion in here.

I get it’s a book review of a “first pass” book but this is well trodden ground by techpol standards polished up for laymen with a “don’t plunder the global south!” wishy washy socialist bent.

For eg “how do we do content moderation then” it’s literally just: maybe a civil service will share content moderation software!

finiteseries··on Stadia Now Google Stream
The interesting thing to me is how magical Stadia is, it just works. Regular 4K uninterrupted streaming at peak hours ($19 discounted cyberpunk playthrough). Could pipe 80gb down my device’s gullet in a few hours without a sweat.

Xbox cloud feels like something from 2009 in comparison, ~720p/1080 max, long queues. Blurry, cloudy, artifacty rendering (and millions more users).

And yet, since finishing cyberpunk I barely touch Stadia. I can’t justify paying another discount, let alone full price and there’s 0 selection aside from Destiny 2 (which also looks and feels magnificent).

It’s like if Netflix had no catalog, didn’t invest in its own production, and ended up white labeling it’s shit out to the Hulus and Paramounts of the world. It’s all about the content.
