findjashua··on Trading halted as U.S. stocks plummet
not exactly - circuit breaker was put in place after the 1987 crash, but the 3-tier system (7-13-20) went into effect only in 2013: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Trading_curb
findjashua··on Visa Buys Plaid
the only way atm would be to sign up for email notifications for any transactions, and parse the emails to get relevant data

there are a few issues though:

1. some banks only send notifications for transactions that are over a certain amount (eg BofA is >$25)

2. the merchant name is arbitrarily cut-off (based on char length), so you don't really get reliable merchant info

findjashua··on Finland's Prime Minister Suggests a Four-Day Workweek and Six-Hour Days
but what percentage of the workforce is actually working in jobs related to solving these problems?

i'd argue that the "anti-work" sentiment here is more to do with lack of fulfillment due to an epidemic of bullshit jobs, rather than not wanting to work.

findjashua··on Kotlin vs. Java
the biggest wins w Kotlin, imo, are the sensible defaults - variables are non-nullable & collections are immutable by default. These eliminate entire classes of runtime exceptions and bugs (respectively).
findjashua··on Show HN: ReactiveSearch Vue – Build Search UIs in Record Time
seems like it only performs the search on the last word instead of the entire query. is that the expected behavior?

my guess is that they're buying put options on the shiller home-price index, at a strike price 20% below the spot price.

though, those indices are only granular at the city level, whereas during a recession all neighborhoods in a city don't drop in value by the same rate - eg for bay area in 2008, east bay got decimated, whereas palo alto/peninsula barely dropped 5%.

findjashua··on Plaid co-founder William Hockey is leaving
i did this for personal use a while back, but the biggest issue i faced was that the merchant name in the email alert was truncated, so it wasn't the same level of info quality that mint/plaid can provide (since they have the complete merchant name)
findjashua··on Boom in Dodgy Wall Street Deals Points to Market Trouble Ahead
One could keep rolling the puts forward, though it would be a drag on returns if the market stays above the strike and the options stay out of the money.
findjashua··on Billions in Dirty Cash Helped Fuel Vancouver's Housing Boom
the EB5 investment isn't backed by the government though, so a lot riskier than the loan for Quebec investor visa. Additionally, as the parent comment mentioned, one could finance the investment and therefore really only pay ~175k out of pocket.

you provide your bank credentials to the 3rd party app, which forwards them to Plaid
findjashua··on Plaid in Canada
Last I checked, neither Plaid nor the banks provide an OAuth login option. You're still giving away your bank credentials to the 3rd party app.

findjashua··on MoviePass CEO says the app tracks your location before and after movies
not sure about Android, but on iOS you can customize which apps have access to location data all the time (eg google maps) and which ones have it only while using (eg moviepass).

So if you open the app only to check-in in the theater, they shouldn't be able to access your whereabouts before/after that.

findjashua··on How inflation swindles the equity investor (1977)
I believe the reasoning behind it is to incentivize long-term investing.

Though, it should really be a tiered system in that case - different tax rates for holding periods of <1 yr, 1-2 yr, 2-3 and so on, instead of just <1 yr & >1yr
