fijiaarone··on JetBrains IDE new Terminal Interface
Terminal in a browser with a heavyweight local server. Now you’re talking!
fijiaarone··on JetBrains IDE new Terminal Interface
What’s the point of including a terminal in an IDE — shouldn’t it be a mobile app instead?
fijiaarone··on OPML is underrated
Now that computers have more than 640kb of memory, it’s much easier to parse a document tree into a data structure and output exactly what you want.
fijiaarone··on Show HN: Natural-SQL-7B, a strong text-to-SQL model
The 25% of SQL that covers everything in 99% of applications is a subset of the 76.5% of SQL that the LLM got right.

I wonder if anyone realizes that selects and joins in every database are implemented literally with for loops written in c.

The reason people use a relational database is because it has loops that are faster, safer, and more efficient than anything you can write.

We’re calling anyone who can write SQL a data scientist now?
fijiaarone··on Lightweight JavaScript Framework Review (For Django Developers)
Excuse me, I forgot that react-dom also ships with an implementation of document.appendChild()

45kb (zipped!) for document.createElement() with a babel transpiler build process.

Or maybe synchronous should be the default.
fijiaarone··on The Bun Shell
People were running high power severs and databases on pentium 2s. Most cloud servers and programming frameworks) don’t exceed their performance.

I thought this was about GitHub Actions.
fijiaarone··on YAML, Python and the Holy Graal

It’s also not possible to write a non-trivial program in Rust.

Why pay someone else when you have your own “carbon removal” program and just pocket the profits?

Of course, you’ll still need to purchase the Certified Genuine Carbon Credit Approved Organic Green Sticker (R) (TM) (501c3) (NGO) (LLC) to prove you are worthy to sequester other people’s consumption sins.

Only Cyber Monday started in July, on a Wednesday.
fijiaarone··on "Useless Ruby sugar": Argument forwarding
Really, it’s because of the habit of Ruby programs to pass a single options (params, args, config) object in to avoid complex configuration.

Really, what’s needed is separation of concerns, instead of a single “do stuff” function that takes an “everything” argument.

But what’s really wanted is global variables with everything is a single scope.

I’ll take “how to make code slower and more error prone in order to save a few keystrokes at the cost of readability” please.
fijiaarone··on Terminating an employee with a bus factor of 1
Pay them more. And then pay them extra to do the work necessary to let them go. And then pay them a big bonus if the transition goes smoothly.

Saying fuck you, you make me rich, and I resent that I can’t get rich without your effort is no way to act, even if you can get away with it.

fijiaarone··on Typing fast is about latency, not throughput
I type no more 25 wpm with at least a 10% error rate, but I don’t have to think about it at all. But I have never been slowed down by typing latency. I spend half my day researching and half my day spacing out and the remaining 2/3 of the day in meetings and still get more done — with fewer lines of code — than the average developer.
fijiaarone··on Play the first ever text adventure game in your Linux terminal
By the way, “Colossal Cave Adventure” was a retcon added at least 20 years later.

The game was originally called “advent”.

fijiaarone··on Play the first ever text adventure game in your Linux terminal
So time sharing systems don’t get filled up with people playing games.
fijiaarone··on What I learned getting acquired by Google
Microsoft wasn’t offering unrestricted perks to contractors, they were treating them like second class employees, paying them less, not giving them benefits or allowing time off, dictating additional rules, excluding them, and avoiding existing labor, discrimination, and tax laws — exactly the same thing they (and every other big corporation) are still doing now — with a codified fiction in place that didn’t exist previously.

Microsoft didn’t lose the lawsuit, they won a settlement — and their lawyers and lobbyists made sure it would never happen again.

Most corporations have preferred vendors and the 50% plus savings in salary and benefits has a large kickback that finds its way back to the employer.

The real issue that was skirted around in the lawsuit was that Microsoft actually owned the vendors that supplied them with contractors.

Sounds like Bard is catching up with ChatGPT in features then.

fijiaarone··on Confusing Git Terminology
But git has a very slightly improved merge algorithm than svn (so they say) — but merge conflicts were less painful and less likely to happen on svn.

The only real advantage git has is bandwidth and disk space —- not that it uses bandwidth and disk space more efficiently —- only that we all have more of both, so it seems more useful than subversion (or whatever else you were using before) when you had limited disk space so you didn’t pass around infinite copies of everything.

fijiaarone··on The emptiness of literature written for the market
There are billions of people and thousands of supercomputers working ceaselessly and communicating instantaneously to filter through modern literature to find a kernel in the chaff. In the past there were only a few thousand people in a few small cities filter through a few hundred books to find the classics.
fijiaarone··on How to draw software architecture diagrams (2022)
Swagger is not documentation, it is is a way to generate executable API examples from code comments.
