fieryscribe··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
Most things go out of business. That's why the franchising model exists. Local owners know their local market best and they take a calculated risk on it.

From what I understand, McDonald's franchisees can make 5-15% of gross revenue of their location. That's a decent return, along the lines of other investments. As with all investments, you may lose too.

fieryscribe··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
Maybe? It's how McDonald's runs things too. They make the food centrally and ship it to franchises. They take on brand risk, food logistics at scale and so on. Franchisees deal with local demand, operations, hiring, local laws and so on.

It's not an exact 1:1, but that seems to be the model here. Tesla does the things that can scale (FSD, manufacturing, etc.) and operators do the things that can't.

fieryscribe··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
They could, but running local operations isn't his forte, preference or interest, it seems. Even if he had a massive fleet of these, he'd have to navigate local laws, demand, operations and logistics.

His revealed preference is to run things centrally and at massive scales.

fieryscribe··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
If McDonald's was profitable, they wouldn't try to franchise it.

That's what this is. You take on operating costs and you understand your local market. They own the brand.

fieryscribe··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
I'm not sure what you're suggesting. This is the comment:

> FIRE has done way more for campus free speech issues this last decade or two ...

> You mean conservative speech? Or has FIRE actually defended speech they despised, like the ACLU used to?

It seems to imply that FIRE has done way more for conservative campus free speech issues. I supplied examples of times when FIRE supported non-conservative campus free speech. I'm not quite clear how else to read that comment, but would love your take.

fieryscribe··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
I'm not sure why you're implying that FIRE "despises" speech; perhaps you see them as conservative. That said, here's are some recent situations in which FIRE has taken the side of what would be under the general progressive/liberal umbrella:

There are more, for sure, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

fieryscribe··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
Thanks for sharing. One thing caught my eye in that report. It says that 57% of Black and 61% of Hispanic respondents claim to have been fully vaccinated. The totals across 40 states in the US are 36% and 41% respectively [1]:

> Less than half of Black and Hispanic people have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose in nearly all states reporting data, including a number of states where less than a third have received a vaccine

I'm aware that polls have a skew, but I can't figure out how those numbers are so different, especially since the latter numbers are about people who have received at least one dose, not the full dose.

fieryscribe··on Apple Reportedly Storing over 8M Terabytes of iCloud Data on Google Servers
I don't find this so convincing.

Most normal usera may not be able to secure things effectively and they can still use the existing iCloud / Google Play infrastructure. That doesn't mean that other users, who want to manage their own data for one reason or another, shouldn't get the opportunity.

It's far more likely that building and maintaining this feature is not worth the development time for Apple and Google product teams at this point, since the possible market is small

fieryscribe··on HK media erase their archives amid rising arrests
No, the government did not remove the extradition law until September 2019, after proposing it in February 2019.

By then, many Hong Kongers had been protesting, arrested, beaten and worse. The reason we Hong Kongers did not and have not stopped is because there has been no justice for them.

That's the principle behind 5 demands, not 1 less.

fieryscribe··on An update on the recent issues surrounding a Reddit employee
The former Reddit employee in question accused the Green Party in the UK of transphobia, after they discovered she hired her own father as an election consultant, under an alias. At the time, he had been charged with rape and child abuse, and has since been convicted.

This is all public information.

fieryscribe··on Google deletes “communist bandits” from comments on Youtube
Wall Street punishes companies that are not profitable or are losing money. Consumers can make that happen by walking away when companies are anti-consumer. If they do, profits fall and Wall Street would hold that company accountable.

Why do you think Zoom hired security professionals and bought Keybase? Why do you think Facebook reacted after the Cambridge Analytica scandal? Why do you think TikTok separated itself from ByteDance in China?

Even with the most federal oversight, US banks and financial firms tanked the economy and then got paid for it. And it's not a left-right thing; it's a them-us thing. And if you don't believe that, you only need to take a look at the Panama Papers scandal.

fieryscribe··on Google deletes “communist bandits” from comments on Youtube
Whatever the government decides, they rarely, if ever, provide an explanation or recourse either: the Patriot Act, Ahmad Arbury, TBTF, the assassination of Awlaki, snooping on Americans, Operation Fast and the Furious, the Pentagon's missing billions, Epstein's death, etc.

I'm as pro-democracy as they come, but the belief that the government is somehow (and always) more accountable than companies strains credulity. Companies are accountable to Wall Street, which implies they're accountable to their consumers too. Shake Shack did not have to return the funds they received recently, but they did, because of media attention.
