fierycatnet··on 'Hackers' at 20
I don't understand the hate. Hackers was a really great niche film. It wasn't going for the Oscar but when I saw it for the first time when I was 14 it got me excited about computers. Movie was fun and soundtrack was great. When I managed to compile and use my first exploit it felt like I was one of "them". Made a few friends online that I only knew by their "hacker names" and I even formed a team. Now that I think about it those were the fun times.
fierycatnet··on An Oral History of Diablo II
That's the game that I've dedicated most of my time in high school. It was gritty, challenging and full of possibilities. I managed to trade and find enough gear to buy high runes and elite rune words. I had a lance barb. It was different and frowned upon, but holy hell the amount of damage he would do.

I think the greatest thing about D2LOD was their dueling system, especially in hardcore mode. I had a friend (RIP) who used to have high level barbarian with teleport amulet. In the older patches it was a rare item, before the crazy rune words and so on. So naturally he was able to assassinate a quite a few naive players, who tried to run away, to collect the ear. Oh man, the rush of playing in hardcore. The thrill was real. There was a real consequence to your mistakes. I think that was the fun part until Blizzard sanitized the game to prevent easy PK.

One thing I wish Blizzard could do is to make a figurine of your character and send it to you. I'd love to have a small figurine of my lance barb that I've dedicated a lot of my time to. Too bad it's all gone now.

fierycatnet··on Lisp is still a secret weapon
Looks like a subtle ad for Clojure. Which I don't mind because I am slowly falling in love with Clojure. I am not sure if it's a "secret" or we should "write all the things in Clojure" but I'd love to see more companies use it, including start ups. I wouldn't mind working for one. Combine JVM's power with Om/Reagent and I think it's a solid stack. Although I am not advanced Clojure programmer. I wonder how it's doing in production?
fierycatnet··on Monads in Scheme
Since it's a LISP, does that mean it would be useful in Clojure as well? Any thoughts on this?
fierycatnet··on Google’s look, evolved
I agree. When they've updated their maps it was frustrating, it still is. Old version was much much better.
fierycatnet··on Ask HN: Alternative tips for quitting smoking?
Well, this might not be popular opinion and many will think it's a sham, but I've used Allen Carr's book to quit drinking... His is actually more known for his 'stop smoking' book and I've known people who used it successfully as well. From my personal experience, a lot of this is in the head, so if your friend is open minded and really wants to quit then Carr's book just might be the answer. I can only vouch for his 'method' that helped me with a drink, not smoke, but it's the same principle. Just my 2c.
fierycatnet··on Phoenix 1.0
Hypothetically speaking, why would you choose Phoenix over Rails for a new app?

Is this open source? On Github or anything like that?
fierycatnet··on Men in committed, romantic relationships have lower testosterone
Nah, I wasn't making that link but I see what you meant now in your post.
fierycatnet··on Men in committed, romantic relationships have lower testosterone
Low testosterone is pretty bad... fatigue, mental fog, low sex drive, weak muscles, ED, etc. I have low test and it's not something that I consider normal. The difference between low and high T is night and day. It greatly affects the well being.
fierycatnet··on Reddit Bans Five Communities In New Anti-Harassment Campaign
This is like dream come true for voat dot co. I highly doubt there is going to be mass migration like it was with Digg but Voat is going to get quite a few users in the near future for what it's worth.

In any case, Reddit has become a new mainstream site full of propaganda, censorship, shadowbanning, hand-picked news, etc. I've noticed a sharp decline in the last year or so.

It's not even their new policy, it just feels like it Reddit got big enough to finally join any other mass media source of information, not in a good way.

fierycatnet··on Show HN: Clojure by Example
Woah. I've been wanting to finish SICP book along with MIT lectures and this site looks like another great addition. This gives me a boost in motivation to finish the book.

If someone ever comes up for something like this for Clojure then it would be incredibly awesome.

fierycatnet··on Show HN: Clojure by Example
Cool, thanks! Looks like a nice reference.
fierycatnet··on It's the Future
Pretty much this. I was working on a simple Rails app to get familiar with Rails and someone mentioned Docker to me. So I went to their website, did the tutorial, didn't understand why this is essential or better and just pushed to Heroku instead. Half of the time, if not more, I have no idea why this or that technology is being pushed so much or mentioned or whatever. And the landing page is not making it easier. Sometimes I feel like web development is more complicated than it should be.
fierycatnet··on A Constructive Look at TempleOS
That account was made 5 months ago. I remember this guy from at least 2 years ago when his project got attention on Reddit. Is it really him with that 5 month old account?

In any case, I don't know much about the guy. I just remember his posts being a little off... that might explain it but he is suffering from schizophrenia if I remember it correctly.

fierycatnet··on A Constructive Look at TempleOS
That's nice. Glad to see it on here. I remember this guy and his OS back when people on Reddit were mean to him because he has a mental disorder. His dedication to this project is admirable.
fierycatnet··on What's new in Xcode 7
This is awesome. I might get back into iOS app development. I didn't feel like paying money for prototyping just so I could run it on my own device. Emulator wasn't doing it for me. Time to pickup Swift.
fierycatnet··on Lycos Life – Coming Soon
Oh, my first thought was "that's one company I haven't heard of in a long time". Figured Lycos is trying to do something cool for their come back. Guess not.
fierycatnet··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
How does it compare to chains.cc, is it similar?
fierycatnet··on Fedora 22 released
I used to run CentOS on my laptop for couple of years, very stable and did everything I needed. It was one of the very few distros that never gave me any issues. Latest software can be a problem but nothing major.
fierycatnet··on Why are there few courses in Soviet literature at American universities? (2014)
That is one cartoon I've never heard of before. We are talking about USSR not Japan right?
fierycatnet··on Why are there few courses in Soviet literature at American universities? (2014)
As a kid growing up in USSR I remember this cartoon, it was one of the most dreadful cartoons they could show on TV.
fierycatnet··on A Simple Guide to Meditation
There are measurable results in meditation, you just need to know what they are and the proper technique to get there. The problem with meditation is that it's not being taught right, plus there are many variations of it.

If you are seriously looking to incorporate meditation in your daily life then get "Focused and Fearless" book and follow all instructions and exercises as they are taught. You will see measurable results.

fierycatnet··on A Simple Guide to Meditation
Jhanic states mostly. Proper meditation gave me a new perspective on Zen and Buddhism as a whole. I've studied it extensively before and disregarded meditation as being superfluous. I was really wrong. It helped tremendously with understanding esoteric parts of Buddhism.

The first experience that got me 'hooked' or rather made me realize that it's not hogwash, is the arousal of piti. The warm sensation in solar plexus that came out of no where after long breath meditation concentration and it turned into waves with each breath-in. It's hard to describe but it's unmistakable when you start getting better at meditation. That book covers everything.

Make no mistake, it's not easy. For whatever reason I got lucky with being able to tune in to deeper meditation, some people struggle for weeks and months to get there. I did Zazen previously on and off and this never got me anywhere. Anapanasati meditation is what will get you to jhanas. From then on, as some scriptures say, the real path to Buddhism begins.

Even if you are not into Buddhism, the pay off is still tremendous. Here is the practical and measurable result of proper deep meditation: ability to calm your mind and achieve total equanimity with virtually no thoughts, just pure awareness and tranquility that lets you sit for hours if you wish to, with zero desire to even move an inch, just sitting still. The ability to exercise your brain like that is pretty huge. In the long term and consistent practice it's beneficial to overall well being.

fierycatnet··on A Simple Guide to Meditation
For those who are interested in advanced meditation and pushing the limits, I can recommend book "Focused and Fearless". Covers very powerful techniques. I went from unable to sit for 15 minutes to 1 hour of effortless deep meditation within a week. YMMV.

fierycatnet··on The male suicides: how social perfectionism kills
I am in TX with a budget of ~1500 for a week or two. The longer and cheaper alone time is better. What do I like, you know I've been so slammed and in my head that I can't even pick a vacation spot or remember what I like. I think I'd enjoy just some peace somewhere, disconnected from it all for a week or two.
fierycatnet··on The male suicides: how social perfectionism kills
This article points out something I've felt intuitively for the last few years.

Can anyone recommend any vacation destinations or some other form of a get-away for a week or two? I've been getting really stressed out lately, probably a burn out. Have been thinking about some sort of a vacation anywhere from a cruise to meditation retreat, can't make up my mind. Any recommendations?

Not to derail this topic but this article outlined some symptoms I have, feel like I need a break.

fierycatnet··on A Response to “What's the Point of a Professor?”
I am pretty disappointed with my academic experience at University for the same reasons that NYTimes highlighted, and I don't agree with this "tattooed prof" but it's just my experience.
