fiachamp··on Assessing Sweden's ‘Vision Zero’ Plan for Suicide Prevention
That assessment of BPD is incorrect. It is not that people with BPD do not experience feelings, in fact they experience them more intensely than normal (if you look at fmri of amygdala). Sometimes, they will become 'numb' because they get so overwhelmed by their feelings that they try not to confront them.
fiachamp··on The Kleiner Perkins Lawsuit, and Rethinking the Confidence-Driven Workplace
From the way people are talking here, you wouldn't think KPCB has 14 female partners on their team...
fiachamp··on How to pick startup ideas
Theres no denying the importance of luck in the outlier outcomes. Thats why a fundamental heuristic of any startup idea you work on should be: "would i be proud i worked on this problem even if i don't get an outlier outcome?" If you can't say 'yes' to that, you probably won't have the fire to overcome the unpredictable obstacles that will fight you every inch of the way.

Ultimately, that means shifting from a 'risk calculating' mindset to an 'exposure mindset.' Instead of 'what are my chances of success', 'am I cool with potentially spending years of my life on this problem regardless of outcome'? The exposure perspective is the basis for 'antifragility' and honestly makes life quite a bit easier and more satisfying to live.

fiachamp··on Software engineering interview questions
We've found a good middle ground. Giving the candidate a few days to do a test project that involves fixing a bug on the production site. Its something they can do at night after work, gets them resolving a real-life problem, seeing how fast they figure out the codebase.
fiachamp··on The Other Side of Depression
What is scary is that some doctors / people consider medication a panacea for curing mood disorder when it can actually get worse initially. Clinical results are much better when it is combined with behavioral therapy (skills training on how you talk to yourself in your mind). Antidepressants take weeks to have a consistent effect on serotonin levels and a lot of patients only on medicine might initially feel hopeless because it seems the medicine isn't working, yet it might be working enough increase motivation (but not mood). This is part of why antidepressants may increase risk of suicide (you might have more motivation to take action without yet experiencing enhanced mood). PLEASE - if you or anyone you know is going to start taking antidepressants, combine it with behavioral therapy, and realize the mood changes take time to work.
fiachamp··on Larry Page: I’d Rather Leave My Billions to Elon Musk Than to Charity
How is Elon Musk comparable to mysticism and parapsychology? A physics-major working on engineering challenges like space travel, electric cars, and renewable energy... Elon Musk's pursuits are at least based in science, its the business viability that is unknown at the beginning
fiachamp··on Consumer Reports Calls Tesla Model S The Best Car Of 2014
Even with non-renewable energy sources, creating the power at a massive GE Turbine is more efficient than a gasoline engine. Internal combustion engines are ~30% efficient in converting fuel to energy releasing the rest of the energy as heat. GE Turbines used at 100+megawatt powerplants are 60% efficient. Same fuel source, twice as efficient. So even if we're not using wind and solar, electric is better for the environment.

Two words: surveillance systems + helicopters could probably cover a lot of the most dangerous areas.
fiachamp··on Ask HN: Where can I find a software job that helps society?
i would check out www.breakthrough.com , they are creating a platform that could help tens of millions of people deal with the stigma / difficulty of getting treatment for mental health. this is a huuuge social issue, probably 10% of the entire population of the US deals with mental illness and a lot of people are undiagnosed or can't get treatment because it is expensive, embarassing, stigmatized, etc.
