ffsm8··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
youre right!

https://code.claude.com/docs/en/monitoring-usage#usage-monit...

thanks for correcting me on that regard

ffsm8··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
wouldnt taht be technically no? Fable should be best if money _really_ isnt a factor?

tbf, i barely feel the difference with opus 5.5 anymore either.

ffsm8··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
does it really matter wherever its the harness or the model for the vibe coder user claude code?

fwiw, i think almost all regressions are down to a/b testing in the harness by anthropic, but it is objectively indistinguishable beyond "the coding agent ceases to be usable" and i'm back to traditional coding for a few hours until its back to normal again

ffsm8··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
Claude code supposedly has otel you can set via env. I haven't set it up, so I'm just repeating hearsay.. but it supposedly has everything relevant in it wrt token usage and cost

It's meant for their test env I think, so is not documented to my knowledge

ffsm8··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
> In addition to the usual tax dodges, and the lobbying for loopholes/preferential tax policy

the latter is just something to do the former

> should include all of those externalized costs

if you actually want to have a serious debate on that topic, you need to actually cite real examples to look at, otherwise it comes off as a general platitude to capture simps who dont actually understand what theyre being told.

> Tax companies for the air and water they pollute

how exactly? and how would that not become a complete dumbsterfire of administration, with ever increasing dystopian oversight of the state? ever more complicated tax rules, ever more situation in which they can find loopholes etc. this sounds great until you actually think about how to implement it, then it should become quiet clear, very quickly that you'd only give exactly the companies that "arent paying their fair share" an even bigger advantage then they already have.

> Tax companies for every employee who isn't paid enough money to support himself

seriously, how. again it sounds great as an idea, like everything socialist inspired. Its just in practice to implent this, the state has to become an autocracy at the same level of a dictatorship.

> Tax companies for every time one of their products makes people sick.

isnt that already the case? thats why you get endless legalese on all purchases pointing out all the things you may not do with the product. If the product makes you sick, youre usually able to sue. That this doesnt actually achieve what you want should be obvious from the status quo. unless you were seriously talking about tax there. but if you were... what would be the point? the person that was harmed would still be sick and not have gotten any help?

> Tax companies for data breeches and security failures

how do you imagine this working? does the state get a backdoor into every company so it can monitor it for intrusions, so it can throw out punitive fines? like china basically, where every company needs to have a party member on payroll so the party is always informed on all developments?

Seriously, you didn't think any of those things through. If you got what you wanted, you get a society akin to the USSR. Thats not something any sane person would want.

ffsm8··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
The only realistic way to achieve that is to simplify tax law so there are no exemptions, deductions, incentives etc.

Just a plain rate.

It comes with funny side effects, eg companies will suddenly want to make simple things in-house again to save on taxes, and it necessitates tariffs as every other nation is following the current scheme where taxes are only due for the last trade.

The whole tax advisor profession vanishes - only book keeping and accounting would stay.

But let's be real here, it would massively impact the market, it sounds fun on paper for armchair analysts like myself - but real human life's would be ruined from the upheaval

And "the rich" for the most part are paying their fair share.

It's very few which employ highly intelligent tax advisors that skirt them. Same with companies, most play by the social rules. It's just large multinationals like Google, Apple and similar which get around paying taxes. And they're mostly paying some taxes in the US too, just in eg Europe they don't at all.

ffsm8··on Coding is not solved
yeah, the llm approach is incredibly wasteful wrt pretty much everything. Performance, RAM, Development (Tokens).

But it does give you surprisingly stasble rube-goldberg machines.

And thats basically what 95-99% of enterprises want from their software.

It annoyed me to no end when i began my career, but at this point ive accepted it and can definitely still have fun developing software with llms. As a matter of fact, as my perfectionism approach to software in my earlier years was never really appreciated... So i dont really mind the new MO.

I still occasionally hand write though, esp. at the dayjob where ive got super small token budgets while continuously being told to use more AI. But that's normal, employers usually give off bipolar vibes with multiple stakeholders wanting to advance each of their bonus package KPI of any given quarter

ffsm8··on I said no and Apple said yes
Kinda off topic here, but you deleted the comment I was responding to so I thought I'll try to ask in an old thread where "nobody else" would notice.

Any good discord community suggestions?

I've been missing a coder community since I've kinda lost touch with anyone's else that likes to code - both with and without llms.

And none of my current day job coworkers actually like to nor can code well. Neither with nor without llms

ffsm8··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
> hitting Claude's weekly limits much sooner than I used to with roughly the same workload,

Anthropic had a +50% weekly tokens promotion since April (!) which just ran out last weekend after getting multiple extensions.

I've been feeling that too,and I suspect that's the true reason why they released opus 5.5 at a discount

ffsm8··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
> Where do you observe things "spiralling out of control"? It isn't everywhere, but it is certainly true of at least one country.

We've recently gone through a very public trial about a women murdering kids and countless people showing support for the confirmed murderer. Claiming she's innocent. When the murderer itself admits the killing.

The whole influencer industry is - from the perspective of religion - as sinful as you can get and gets more insane with every year. Remember: narcism, vanity, showing off, envy, gloating -> that's 90% or the viral content and it's all based on behavior Christianity considered Sin until the modernity happened.

The other day a gangster publicly murdered another person and hundreds of thousands were raised in response for support

The fact that for almost 10 years variations of onlyfans, patreon before that have been some of the most profitable enterprises. And the way the "models" foster the para social behavior for money extraction

That there are people unironically thinking January 6th riots in the US were patriotic and not hooligans living out their power fantasies. Also patriotism is pretty close to a sin itself, as it gets very close to pride. It most definitely applies to the MAGA people.

greed is one of the primal Sins. If our societies were still deeply religious, we wouldn't even have anything close to the fallout from the unrestricted market exploitation we have today. It would still happen occasionally, but a lot less because currently people don't even consider greed "bad". It's considered the default and obvious MO

I could go on forever, but I think my point is clear and more would not convey this in any better way. One closing remark makes sense however: modern Christianity is a complete bastardization of it's origin. Pastors are humans too, and they're ultimately also grown from our society. And a sinful society mostly produces sinful people. The issue I see is that the idea of Sin has left our mind. In my teenage years I constantly argued that we don't need that, we can be moral without religion. I just think society has proven myself false, as our collective insanity has shown

ffsm8··on Tells of a Slop UI
Eh, I'd prefer a opus5.5 review with consequent approval over one by a human which I have to wait 5 days for.

Ymmv, I also hate it when people dont read their own PR first though. But I know I've previously identified comments as LLM written which the dev... On further discussion definitely wrote themselves. So you gotta keep the false positives in mind.

ffsm8··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Fyi, both TikTok and YouTube are classified as Social Media.

They're actually prime examples of the toxicity it spreads.

ffsm8··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
> I’m not sure it’s social media so much as the smartphones.

It's probably the combination of both. The smartphone itself is innocuous, but increases the availability of the social media.

However if social media wasn't as ubiquitous it'd likely be less of an issue then it is today.

However, if social media wasn't a thing people just wouldn't constantly pull out their phones, hence id blame it instead of the form factor.

ffsm8··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
> has rewired our kids

The kids? I mean sure, they too - but seriously... It's not just the kids that have been affected.

Things have been spiralling out of control ever since social media was introduced.

Ever more extreme positions are being agreed as the norm, and what had previously been the norm is being decried as evil itself.

I'm an atheist myself but I cannot help but think that a lot of our western issues is because we generally no longer see the world from the lens of religion.

Evil has lost its meaning, and people started randomly selecting other behaviors as "evil", and excusing actual evil deeds like rape, murder etc because "reasons".

This has opened up social media to become a echo chamber of ever increasing insanity.

I'm not seeing things get better through initiatives like that. I suspect things are gonna keep spiralling more and more out of control until we end up in a dystopia in which the populus looses a lot of their rights. And not in the too far future either, I'm almost certain I'll witness it before I grow old.

ffsm8··on One Month Without AI
I call it the redditification of HN. The trend has been massively increased with Corona, and now post AI it's essentially the norm.

People can't even discuss about any politics anymore.

Back in Obama's days there were always interesting discussions in the political threads and they were rarely insta flagged. And it was mostly nuances wrt business needs and what that means for our societies. The PRISM news also frequently got heated, and still stayed somewhat technical.

Extremely noticable compared to the platform it is today.

Tbf though, HN always had a few topics it was extremely irrational about.

Eg Apple since the start and Musk post 2012...

ffsm8··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
I mean creatine monohydrate costs like 20€/kg off of Amazon.

Taking it 2 weeks is not a big investment, and by that time you'll know whenever it works for your body or not.

The thing that's unclear is wherever there are long term health issues when taking a lot of creatine over months and years - but with it being so cheap and highly available by countless cheap brands, astroturfing initiatives would be highly unlikely.

ffsm8··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
<10g is the correct dosage for the non-mental benefits

But inversely, unless you actually go above 10, eg 15... The blood saturation isn't enough for your brain to take advantage of it.

But there is very little studied about sustained use of such a dosage. (Only short term - eg 1 week - which isn't long enough for the benefits again)

It's safe enough for anecdotes of people doing it for years and not having issues - but despite others claiming that it's well studied, it's really not - at least not with dosages above 5g in humans.

Personally I've been doing so for a year now and can unquestionably confirm a strong effect, which goes away if I reduce the dosage below the threshold. So at least my body responds to it.

But you're not getting a proper study unless you get thousands of people to take it for years... Which is basically impossible as there are too many confounding factors to get meaningful results.

And organizing such a study is gonna be too expensive too, with no sponsors willing to take up the tab

I've already written and edited this comment a lot, but as a final remark I'd like to point out that the benefits I'm referencing is having an easier time concentrating. This can also be a demerit, as you can easily be caught thinking about something for pretty long before you realize.

ffsm8··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
You need sustained 15-20g/day for mental benefits.

If you're only after the lifting benefits, 3-5g/day is sufficient.

ffsm8··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
He did say it's a cycle after all! Scnr

Title:

> Creatine promotes cancer metastasis through activation of Smad2/3

Tldr is basically that creatine helps body cells (in rats) to grow. Regardless wherever they're bad (cancer) or good (muscle). At least that's how I understood that study the last time I came across it. So probably stop using creatine when you've a cancer that's growing. Or its liable to use the creatine to turbocharge it's growth

ffsm8··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
You may not have taken enough. You need 15-20g/day for mental benefits. And long term, at least 2+ weeks.
ffsm8··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
Trump is as corrupt as you can get, so yeah it would solve the issue.

But that's an entirely different matter to the original claim.

ffsm8··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
Writing disingenuous comments like this only makes people pay less attention to your points when it matters.

The stated reason for the "terrorist" title was not them being not-rich. It was facilitating a platform which hosted organizations which behave on the extreme end - because it's privacy centered and those elements obviously want that.

If would be a valid discussion point wherever that justifies setting the whole platform on fire, but the way you're making the point ultimately sabotages your message.

ffsm8··on Meta VR Glasses
This product line already exists for years. Meta is just entering it.

It's essentially the xr-glasses /vr glasses category. Plenty of options around on stores

ffsm8··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
To me, yes.

After all the delivery is different.

With traditional advertising you're being sold a fantasy. The advertisment is usually produced so you're self-inserting yourself into the production. So when you're seeing the fit and good looking cowboy smoking a Marlboro... You subconsciously think: that's who I wanna be, and consequently may be more likely to buy it.

Influencer marketing is however inherently contextualized to the para social relationship between the viewer and the creator. The people that buy the product do so because "their" creator told them about it.

At least that's been the feeling I've got on every sponsorship pitching to date. It's aimed at people that want to get closer to the Creator. At least in their head.

ffsm8··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
It makes releasing software a lot more complicated.

Not a big deal if you're basically the only developer and handroll the process - but poly repositories make release and dependency management a lot more straightforward to wrangle

ffsm8··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
It continued to blow my mind that the influencer industry is a thing that works.

I'm not questioning it. I know it does. I just cannot wrap my head around it beyond the initial marketing angle (you cannot be interested in an article unless you know it exists).

Eg I like to watch some pretty mainstream creators like mkbhd. Never was I actually interested in any of the products he pitched. Literally every marketing $ spent on him that ultimately reached my eyeballs was entirely wasted by the sponsors

Not sure what you didn't understood in their comment though, maybe the raph loop (and jev which was just released)? Isn't the rest completely self explanatory?

ffsm8··on Markdown in /src
Gits data structure already allows for that, as you can add additional data to a commit after it was made.

You'd consequently only need to implement your custom git gui and extension to visualize this information.

Maybe a good project for the next weekend? Just eg make a prototype tui in golang and see where you end up

> i think you might be betraying your own technical literacy gaps with that comment. In many Linux distros, your package manager can update your kernel and boot loader, from userspace.

You think wrong.

I maintain multiple Linux system on the side an know about it well enough.

The Nvidia drivers however are not bios/uefi in case you didn't know. That's what firmware is.

Those can still be flashed from a root Linux booted into a graphical interface, but nonetheless were not the topic of discussion.

Aside from that - a borked kernel can still be easily recovered for most nowadays, as they usually keep the old versions around with a simple picker after an unsuccessful boot.

Still, I'm unable to grasp the point youre making in relation to what I said. I thought I was very explicitly recommending against people without any technological capability to use Linux... You seem to agree?

ffsm8··on I said no and Apple said yes
Mmh, reading your comment leaves me a little divided inside.

Are you unaware that they likely want to talk with you, and the technological issues are likely just the vehicle for this?

I suggest you just help them and try to savor the time you have with them. The time is likely a lot shorter then you expect. But of course, just a random bystanders perspective
