ffsm8··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I understood this comment chain to be about the technology archetype of smart glasses with cameras in them, not about Meta glasses.

If it was about the latter then I'd agree that there is no usecase for them

ffsm8··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I think eg police and military personnel should be required to wear cameras while on duty and interacting with people (So not during their whole shift, but whenever they're knowingly entering an interaction)

This may be a body camera or a camera built into glasses. That is a very legit usecase as far as I'm concerned.

There are other professions in which such a device would be a net benefit, that was just a simple example.

ffsm8··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
I think you didn't understand what I was trying to say.

Fraunhofer didn't do licencing before joining up with Thomson. That's why - back in the 90s - there were no litigation anywhere even though everyone ignored their patents.

Then Frauenhofer joined up with Thomson and that's where your understanding joins up with reality: now the Frauenhofer does licencing and sues anyone that's not paying them.

My whole comment was a technical tidbit - maybe meaningless from today's perspective... But the previous view interpreted a forward thinking strategy with the monetization of mp3 that just wasn't there

ffsm8··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
Ha, you're misremembering, but it's been a long time so I don't begrudge you.

Fraunhofer is a research institution. They didn't really do licencing, that's why they never went after anyone.

Then Thomson joined the venture (wouldn't you know it, French!) and the fun with litigation got started

Not trying to protect Frauenhofer there at all, if they didn't smell opportunity they wouldn't have teamed up with Thomson after all... But I think the trend is very clear. Germans are generally a lot worse at the litigation game then the french. Historically that makes sense, but it's definitely surprising that it still holds true in modern times

ffsm8··on Fastmail offers EU data region
The point was that the definition of insider trading does not extend to politicians buying/selling from their "insider knowledge" as it's not internal business knowledge. Hence it is legal (in Germany) for politicians to buy/sell right before passing laws which influence the valuation of companies.

Which I may add: you could've easily found out yourself too if you looked up what I wrote.

ffsm8··on Fastmail offers EU data region
Meanwhile in Germany insider trading is completely legal for politicians. Well, not insider trading - but it's definition supposedly doesn't extend beyond internal business information.

(At least that's what people keep telling me, im not a lawyer)

ffsm8··on Fastmail offers EU data region
> your data can still be forcibly pulled and often without you being aware that this happened

as a german i feel the urge to point out that this technically also applies to european companies... With more hurdles for the US, but still technically applicable

ffsm8··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
i actually vividly remember when they started introducing that flow... the first time i came across it was a total knee-jerk negative reaction. unrelated to that, i switched to windows a few years later (my old imac wasnt good enough to play world of warcraft)... but when i came back to it 10+ years later, it still felt strange.

i mean its neat from a minimalism perspective, but the decision to not ship with a regular installation UI in OG macOS X came with the tradeoff of not cleanly _uninstalling_ software either. config files etc were always left over.

but i guess - as Apple keeps locking down good old macOS X in favour of forcing software to go through the Apple Store this is going away as a sideeffect?

ffsm8··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
> I probably spend like $80

mate, if youre not using subscription then youre spending waaaaaaay more. the plan itself with fable/sol will most likely have already cost more then $80 -- ime thats more like 500-2k/day of usage.

most harnesses let you see the usage in the status bar, i encourage you to enable it

ffsm8··on The Gargantuan Lie That Is Collapsing the Climate
I don't disagree but I feel like this comment chain kinda implies taking action today would actually meaningfully change the trajectory too...

It really doesn't. Climate change is a global problem. It would need a global solution, and everyone should know that that's beyond unlikely to appear... So the only thing you can do is reduce local pollution - which is meaningful in it's way (better quality of life), but has no long term impact on the climate.

ffsm8··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
What was untrue specifically? I'm not sure what quoting the electricity by general source over the last decades disproves.

Did you read something into spwas comment he didn't actually say?

ffsm8··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
It's been true for at least 16 years though, admittedly - it's gotten even worse since Corona
ffsm8··on Don't be a meat proxy
At my dayjob there is a person spearheading ai across the enterprise.

They generated lots of documentation across the whole stack and now makes all PO/BAs read it if it's correct. So not just 300 lines - he unironically generated thousands of lines of "documentation" and is now making hundreds of people review it for him

Complete brainrot

Au psychosis is getting seriously outrageous at this point

Thankfully I'm a dev and thus aren't in the blast radius of that genius idea

ffsm8··on I don't recommend Tailwind CSS
I see, I must've misunderstood your comment earlier.
ffsm8··on I don't recommend Tailwind CSS
What do you think tailwind is?

It's a utility to generate deduped/treeshacken css classes - according to a config file the parent mentioned

It's not some grand framework or something.

It's literally doing exactly what the grand parent said. Define root css variables, and generate the applicable/used css classes that were used in the code

ffsm8··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
I think the alternative project is a great idea, it should be a Honeypot essentially. Something that nobody maintains or looks at, maybe just accepting all contributions no matter how retarded.

Now you've successfully mitigated them

As an extra aside you can add a contributors guidelines there that contributions explicitly accepts the privacy notice, and then write in it that you will continuously subscribe all authors to all spam lists you can find and will publish SEO optimizees articles about them how they're a danger for employment etc

Fwiw, I've done those kinds of requests before and it did so successfully.

It did use Google to provide me with the answers though, sooo...

They haven't litigated the last public non-compliance... Despite that one being extremely public. So probably not at all for now.
ffsm8··on Worse on Purpose
My last ones were "new balance m520" bought in March 2023 on sale for 40€ (size 47, always hard to find). (Non-sale price is usually around 160). I threw them away in June.
ffsm8··on Worse on Purpose
> It's been a long time since we've had a sense for how expensive clothing used to cost, and a "good" pair of boots (just as example) would be an enormous sticker shock to most people.

Esp that example it's kinda triggering me a little, because someone I know can't shut up about it.

From my perspective, what they consider "a good pair of shoes" is what I'd consider a "durable pair of shoes", which is - to them - criteria which makes them good

While that's an acceptable view, it's subjective - not objective. And I wouldn't trade my running shoes for them, even if I have to buy them new every 2-3 years... And consider the running shoes better, because they do provide a more comfortable wearing experience - at the cost of longevity.

ffsm8··on Htmx 4.0, the first JavaScript library to release exclusively on the Game Boy
From an engineering perspective, sqlite and PostgreSQL are equivalent.

The difference is only in the deployment/maintenance.

And considering the context he stated, zero downtime really doesn't seem like something he's worrying about.

ffsm8··on Proving a human wrote something
Doesn't it boil down to the old "you don't understand it unless you're able to explain it to a 5yo"?

Because if you can do that, you'll also be able to express yourself within character limits

Also - purely because you brought generations up: Twitter is a millennial product. the brainrot Gen is mostly Alpha, and some zoomers.

ffsm8··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
Technically true but highly misleading. The amount of good like that are few, less then 30% of the EU -> US trade.
ffsm8··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
You're splitting hairs in this case, while that's unquestionably true, it's irrelevant if there tariffs are only set on one party.

That's why Trump's tariffs on everything was so ... Uh ... "Interesting". If only one party gets the tariffs, you end up with other parties selling the goods instead, which does cause meaningful damage to the tariffed party

esp. important to point that correct term because frog boiling is a urban myth.

frogs dont stay in a pot even if you slowly increase the heat. they leave. it has reportedly been attempted multiple times and they. always. leave.

Ah, I really walked into that one. Yeah, the phrasing + placement of the remark implied that all comments are artificial.

That was not my actual intent, it was poorly expressed by me. I was specifically talking about the account which created the comment colinhb responded to. That'd make it the... Grand Grand Grand grandparent now I think?

ffsm8··on Opus 5 is currently #1 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Leaderboard
I suspect most of those comments on llms like the parents are generated by anthropic and openai to shape the discussion/mindset

They always give off the same astroturfing vibes that reddit became infested with after the early 2010s (just look at it's comment history)

Ofc unprovable for users. Ycombinatior could try to, but it'd just become a cat/mouse game which they'd likely lose because of the incentives
