> And how much complexity and engineering effort and bugs are you willing to tolerate to halve your memory allocations?

You seem to be confused about this relationship. It's usually exactly the opposite.

The wasteful applications are generally not well reasoned about and half assed implementations. That's why they're guzzling resources

There is ofc a middle ground, because targeting eg incredibly resource constrained embedded systems will naturally increase complexity, but that's something entirely different to the scenario this discussion was about up to this point.

ffsm8··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
I did that but not necessarily.

When prompted to write to it, it will always try to write into the Claude.md and error out with that approach.. It eventually figures it out, but it's a ymmv situation I think

ffsm8··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
Completely made up BS, as so often in those discussions.

NATO is the USA. If they actually wanted to allow Ukraine to join, they could've.

And Ukraine never even attempted to join until AFTER the invasion in 22.

And it was not Germany in particular that spoke out against the idea of Ukraine joining NATO back in 2008. Basically every member said it would unnecessarily aggrevate Russia. Blaming that on Germany is disingenuous to a stupid level.

There are countless people with essentially no domain knowledge to speak of after working on the domain for a decade.

I have no idea how the original authors competency is, I know nothing about them.

There is however a strong correlation between people being influencers and kinda mediocre at what they're an influencer in - which is frankly understandable, because a large part of their skillset is usually more towards attracting an audience and making the topic interesting.

Usually the true domain experts rarely interface with the public beyond their professional capacity.

It's well documented that the Chinese models were enabled by training on openapi and anthropics models...

Europe actually follows americas rules, hence they're not doing that.

It's braindead for sure considering how the US treats europe, but it is what it's

ffsm8··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
That's a fair point, but kinda moot from my perspective considering the currently polling party results.

Both the Left part and AFD are essentially just going to sell Germany out to Russia, and the remaining parties are seemingly too inept to change the trajectory.

ffsm8··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
> it was actually the Russian invasion of Ukraine that broke my perception of German people and thus CCC for me.

Wdym?

I'm German and kinda wanna know.

My personal view on the matter is that Germany should not have - in any way - participated. There was no treatment with Ukraine. The Russian invasion was unconscionable, but ultimately doesn't matter if you hadn't entered into a defense contract before the event.

From my perspective this whole thing is like someone not paying their insurance premium and then having a random assortment of insurers offer options to them. Simply because theyre geographically close.

And it's not like the massive amount of money being thrown at them is actually being appreciated either. Yes I know they're supposedly only borrowing the money, but anyone with half a brain knows that Ukraine will default as soon as the war ends, effectively wiping the slate.

I hold the same position for any other initiatives that the German politicians throw money around for outside of its own borders

ffsm8··on I Don't Like LLMs

Your personal development surely did, but people of all ages ended up in that mindset, and there are countless anecdotes of people talking about the reverse... Both older and younger then you.

> Protectionism never works in the long term.

You seem to misunderstand what Protectionism is. This is not an example of it not working. If anything, it is any example of it working. Because Protectionism is about protecting your industry from foreign competition - exactly what China decided to do.

ffsm8··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Adrenaline is the drug, ain't it ... And gambling is just one way to leverage it.

However once you realize that gambling is not the drug, and merely something that triggers your body to create a rush... Then can you really call it a drug? At least any more then any other of those activities?

Eg Skydiving and basically any other extreme sports.

And once you're there, you should really realize that it's not worth the sacrifice.

This is a societal issue and should not be addressed with legislation.

The only thing that can be safely regulated are things like disallowing marketing.

ffsm8··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
while i suspect youre right, this cannot be concluded with the information we have as of today.

eg its also possible that theyre either close to AGI (or even beyond it) - and its just too expensive to run at scale, making it a novelty from the perspective of profitability for the near to medium future.

you could argue that they could still do it for some positions -- but even that depends on just how expensive this theoretical model is.

ffsm8··on The AI job market in 2026
40%?

If you add the Mehrwertsteuer you'll pay on all bought goods you're paying significantly over 50%. And if you're unmarried over 60%, because clearly fuck them as far as German society is concerned.

And that's on top of what I was referencing: eg a lot of the social security payments are split across employees and employer. The employer part is essentially hidden in the wage, but the employer is still required to pay them - and for the employer, it obviously doesn't matter whom he needs to pay this to...

It's almost if the government wanted to hide just how much they're actually taking from the payslip, because if you add THAT as well, you end up significantly over 60%, approaching the 70%.

And all that to never actually get anything back from the system, at least if you're millennial or younger. But we've clearly gone off track here ༎ຶ ‿ ༎ຶ

ffsm8··on The AI job market in 2026
I'm German and it'd say it's plausible for median.

Switzerland basically still has a middle class, that's why their wages are where they're.

While my wage has significant improved over the last years, statistics show that wages have been stagnating for 20 years and inequality keeps rising.

Obviously a lot less pronounced then in the USA, but still significantly more then in eg Switzerland.

The difference is even bigger if you look at current valuation of chf, it's almost $140k or 120k€

Though you should keep in mind that Germany has a pretty strong social security system. Not a benefit if you're a working adult, but it explains some of the difference

ffsm8··on How to write an effective software design document
> Designing in a group can be very difficult, and doing it well is a skill set that most people don't naturally have

Not only is it a skill every participant needs to have, they also all need to have a similar amount of competence and knowledge about the domain as well as the current implementation, otherwise it's mostly pointless ime.

But if all ven diagram circles overlap ... It is nice. I can count the times this materialized (in my professional life) on one hand. So I'm generally more towards the "make a prototype, then explain it to the others. Either it's the baseline for the discussion or the illuminating event that clears up wherever this approach works with that team.

ffsm8··on Don't call yourself an artisanal programmer
I think this dissonance is because people currently equate the engineering with profit optimization, as were already pretty deep into the capitalism "endgame".

But in the first phase of industrialization, the quality went up - exactly because we suddenly had specific measurements and tolerances.

The markets however did what they do best: optimize for profit. And the public markets preferred cheap over quality... At least in the consumer space. Objectively quality has significantly improved across the board with every decade. Just not in consumer goods, because of their consistent spending habits

So in my mind a craftsman is something akin to an artist. Whereas an engineer provides solutions.

ffsm8··on Starlink Signal Leakage Threatens Radio Astronomy's Most Critical Frequencies
There is no atmosphere to speak of, so only if directly exposed. Hence that's a solvable issue.

The whole thing is incredibly expensive though, while it may be doable with current technology, the amount of money they'd have to set aside may be a hard sell for the miniscule potential of this research - at least from the lens of 2026... So the original position of the article makes sense, it may become functionally impossible, even if technically possible

Reading threads like this always confuses me a little...

Since Corona this platform has become basically reddid as it was 10-15 yrs ago.

> Meanwhile the legitimately, broadly-hacker stuff gets left out for the most part

Those were pretty much always niche content here. This was- at least until Corona, a forum where you got usually pretty highly intelligent and critical input on various topics, strongly centered around products as a direct consequence of this being the (I think) most successful VC forum.

Pretty much every comment section had me think about something that I hadn't fully understood before. Nowadays? It's extremely rare to see anything remotely insightful. It's mostly just reactionary/knee jerk response, from people that clearly never actually thought about what they're actually talking about/just parroting political points.

I do miss the older content, and I've found myself getting more and more toxic as a consequence of seeing ever less insightful if not downright stupid comments here. Which - if I'm honest - objectively contributes to the problem and I should stop henceforth.

It's interesting to observe that there seemingly is a very high relationship with groups of people producing garbage and seeking extra protection through other means to "level the playing field" aka force everyone to be on their level.
ffsm8··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
The word "admit" conveys a context of "fault". If you're going to say a similar thing about the landscape admitting to something then I'd be callimg you crazy, yeah.

The ai psychosis in this case it's specifically because of the used word. Same story as with words like "love" etc

> Confess or acknowledge: Agreeing that a fact, mistake, or crime is real.

And I can see were really barreling down the road of stupidity on this comment chain with one person being more idiotic then the next

ffsm8··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
there is an established term for this behaviour: hallucination.

lets me rephrase what i said before as on retrospection the point i was trying to make didnt come across:

Asking the model such as question is a pointless endeavor. It will pretty much always answer in a plausible sounding manner to whatever question you gave it.

Its like another top HN story - an opus5 parody site right now, https://opusfived.dev/

pretty much the whole dialog is plausible given the prompts the user is required to make to illustrate the point the author of the site wanted to make... but the thing thats ironic about the site is that ... if youre prompting the model badly, it outputs garbage. though i'm pretty sure the author didn't want to make that point, to me its a perfect illustration of this.

And the same applies to asking the model to explain themselves and the related question. Asking for a source of the term is fine, and it will either respond with one and its cleared up -- or not and you know its a hallucination. nothing special about it, as they constantly hallucinating. its usually just self-correcting during the agentic loop.

ffsm8··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
The same way people have been doing so for years before ai. You may or may not remember, but the parent comment is basically a 1:1 copy of people complaining about how stack overflow provided young devs all the answers.

Some people took the answers and learned from them, incompetents just copy pasted them and called it a day.

The share of incompetence just went up significantly over the years, so its a lot more noticeable at this point.

ffsm8··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
Sincerely , I think you're blaming the AI incorrectly there. You just got incompetents on your payroll.
