ferros··on Dependency
I was thinking of this:

https://www.sciencealert.com/how-a-programmer-almost-broke-t...

ferros··on Dependency
I wonder what the most critical (and smallest, least maintained) npm package in the world is?
ferros··on Response to Google open letter
This media release is confusing.

It was almost as if somebody said you need to put out a press release so find something to put in it, rather than we have something really important to say so we must put out a press release.

Who is making these decisions?

ferros··on Reversing Mental Age with Psychedelics
I’m not so sure. Again speaking only from my observations. Some people i know have migrated to another country in their early twenties, taken on their new host language as their core. E.g partner and kids with this new language.

Yet still after 40 years they are not as comfortable as with their original language.

ferros··on Reversing Mental Age with Psychedelics
I always wondered why kids could learn a handful of languages and adults struggle to learn anything past one.

Language is an interesting one. Maybe it’s my personal bias but it seems a lot easier to learn other things than language as an adult. Instruments, skills, etc.

ferros··on ThinkPad 560E
Appreciate the explanation, not information that’s readily found when you search explanations on dead batteries.
ferros··on ThinkPad 560E
Good point - I didn’t add a disclaimer, not recommended! And probably not a fun tip but nonetheless saved my bacon a few times when I needed quick access to devices.
ferros··on ThinkPad 560E
On a slightly related note, fun tip. If you have a ‘dead’ laptop or mobile phone battery that’s too dead to even recharge.. I have ‘jumpstarted’ some by connecting to a li-ion cordless drill battery for a few minutes.

I’ve managed to get a few old mobile phones back to life using this method.

Edit: as a safety note this is not recommended! Please read some of the comments below!

ferros··on C.I.A. Lacing (2014)
Thanks for explaining like this. It seems from the downvotes to my comment most people don’t see it as a valid question.
ferros··on C.I.A. Lacing (2014)
How covert is staring at someone’s shoes trying to identify slight variations?
ferros··on Treating children for worms yields long-term benefits, says new study
How common are worms in western societies?
ferros··on The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free
Agreed. Even if you get past the first layer, which is to create something that sells. You’re still left with organisational biases. Then after that personal reporter biases.

It would take a large conscious effort to get past all of these.

ferros··on The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free
I would be willing to pay an amount for better quality news than what can be found for free, however news outlets always seem to lean one way. I want somebody to just report and not tilt it in one direction.
ferros··on Australia to make Facebook, Google pay for news
What implications will this have elsewhere. Where is the line drawn?

I don’t disagree with this but it feels like this will open a hornets nest.

ferros··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
There is a book on this very topic called 'The Shallows' by Nicholas Carr
ferros··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
Fair comment I can see where you're coming from in terms of humility and bias. Again I can only talk from personal experience but I notice this also from self assessment exercises in performance reviews. Humility aside the more senior developers (in my opinion) are more able to accurately gauge their strengths and shortcomings. And I can't help but wonder if these skills are part of what help them develop from junior/mid to senior.
ferros··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
When interviewing new candidates it's interesting to see the difference between beginner/mid and seniors. The beginner/mid group seem to have a lot more confidence in their skills and not be as aware of what they don't know. The seniors seem to be more aware of what they don't know and maybe also a little harder on themselves.
ferros··on The Silence Is Deafening
On top of all this there is an arbiter (social network) that filters and decides what is important enough be shared maximally. Before anybody even hears your conversation it has been filtered to a degree, there is no organic interpretation of the situation by the group like there would be in real life.
ferros··on Virgin Australia administrators agree to sell airline to Bain Capital
I think they have avoided any handouts to accelerate(Or at least not delay) a sale. Now that there is new ownership I expect they will come to the table.
ferros··on Virgin Australia administrators agree to sell airline to Bain Capital
Virgin’s unrealised value is in the government handouts and concession that are still to come.

Virgin is the second and only competitor to Australia’s main carrier QANTAS, and sole carrier for some routes.

The government will not let them fade away. Big money and concessions will be forthcoming.

ferros··on Australian Government and businesses hit by state-based cyber attack, PM says
What is the motivation behind this announcement?

Considering that it is a generic ‘we are under attack’.

The Prime Minister doesn’t usually hold press conferences like this unless there is a good reason.

ferros··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
Excuse my ignorance, but apart from defaulting to Google search engine, what are the negatives and hidden google effects of a vanilla chrome install?
ferros··on The ideal tech stack for a personal developer blog in 2020
It’s much like Wordpress in the sense that you can get it up and running very quickly. The time cost is in how much you want to customise it.

Once it’s set up it’s just markdown, no ruby required.

ferros··on The ideal tech stack for a personal developer blog in 2020
Personally I work in tech all day, I want my blog to be as simple as possible and to focus just on my writing.

Still using Jekyll.

ferros··on eBay port scans visitors' computers for remote access programs
Fair enough, they’re doing it to protect their business.

But why should a user have to subject their machine internals to inspection by eBay? And, without their consent.

ferros··on Becoming Addiction-Free (2017)
Are all addictions bad? I’m addicted to coffee. I have been caffeine free many times before however I prefer the coffee addiction.
ferros··on How a star explosion may have shaped life on Earth (2015)
The more I read and learn the more I realise how little we know about everything that surrounds us and existence itself.

It truly is humbling.

ferros··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
The real question is, after this all dies down, will these apps be repurposed and become the new normal?
ferros··on Dissection of COVIDSafe (Android): Australian government's contact tracing app
To his credit the PM seemed quite knowledgeable about AWS as far as a non tech person/politician when he answered questions in a press conference. Used the correct terminology and was able to explain in minor detail.
ferros··on Dissection of COVIDSafe (Android): Australian government's contact tracing app
It was interesting to hear a lead story on the nightly news talking about data privacy issues related to where the data was stored, saying that the data would be stored on “American company Amazon’s Servers”.

No mention of Australian regions or GovCloud etc.
