fernmyth··on 30 years later, QBasic is still the best
In a declarative language, nothing.
fernmyth··on Common color mistakes and how to avoid them
You may have color receptors that are not defective, but too close in activation spectra. If that's the case, then there's a workaround. Block out the light in the spectral overlap, and then the receptors will only activate on separate signals.

fernmyth··on The Rust compiler isn't slow; we are
Every time you make a compiler faster, I add extra dependencies to all of your projects. I am Wirth’s Demon - the enforcer of Wirth’s Law!
fernmyth··on Less is exponentially more (2012)
> To be honest programmers have a habit of being very loose with language.

I wish this weren't true. It's quite damning.

It's less bad in a real-time conversation, with fast feedback about how well we're being understood. But it still hints that we don't have the concepts clear in our own minds.

fernmyth··on Nature versus Nurture? Add ‘Noise’ to the Debate
Jushi: “Is nature or nurture the primary driver of human development?”

Sensei: “First tell me, what is the sound of one hand clapping?”

Jushi: “Huh? That doesn’t even make sense to ask! You can’t get a clap without two surfaces interacting with each other!”

Thus the jushi was enlightened

fernmyth··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
I made blurb.cloud so that an old phone or tablet could serve as a shared billboard.
fernmyth··on My FOSS Story
Your `xgb` and `xgbutil` libraries did exactly what I needed, and helped me write a nifty little window management utility for myself. Thanks!
fernmyth··on Nearly a quarter of U.S. rural hospitals are on the brink of closure – report
Huh, if the pay is better, why is it challenging to get physicians to work in rural areas? If you don't mind sharing, why wouldn't you do it?
fernmyth··on How much Americans make in wages
Not nitpicky at all. It's a pointless, obfuscating blob of unhelpful colors violating basic principles of data visualization:

- Sequential income brackets are not adjacent. The wage of each blob can only be understood by reading every number

- Irregular shapes make it impossible to gauge size by eye

- White text on green and pink backgrounds does not score well on WCAG. At least they had the decency to make the text bold.
