fergie··on Claude Opus 5.5
The colours are suspiciously consistent across every svg. Like why should the bike always be that shade of red for example? It does seem to be trained on this problem.
fergie··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
I read this article and was beginning to feel like it wasn't really going anywhere or making good arguments. Was disappointed, although in hindsight not surprised to find out that it was AI-slop.

Stop upvoting AI-slop people!

fergie··on AI Robots – When will they be in our homes
I am suspicious of "articles" in this format. They seem to be simultaneously pushing an agenda whilst deliberately targeting midwits.
fergie··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
Its called "free movement of labor" and its a very good thing. Arguably the reason that Silicon Valley happened in the first place.
fergie··on What Comes After Git
For me, the actual thing that git is not fantastic for is versioning data(bases), but this article doesn't seem to address that. In fact I am struggling to parse the article's proposed problem/solution.
fergie··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Right- but why not let the LLM program directly in Java?
fergie··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
In the age of LLMs, I get why you would dump portablity in favour of close-to-the-metal Swift and Javascript codebases. However I don't really understand the need for Kotlin- surely thats just an unnecessary complication and performance hit?
fergie··on Are women better than men at endurance running?
I read a prediction maybe 30 years ago that women would eventually start to beat men in endurance events, so its really interesting to see it actually happen. It seems that one slightly overlooked aspect of the research is to look at the way that athletes are actually living: women often have greater responsibility for stuff outside of their sport whereas male athletes often have the option of focusing their lives 100% on their chosen competition- I suspect that female performance might actually be slightly underreported when you control for a lack of caregiving responsibilities.
fergie··on I resigned from Anthropic today
It should be obvious that AI is already capable of inducing humans to think or do things, and that this power is only going to increase over time.
fergie··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
Yes, but the point is that maybe in 2026 we should be looking at ways to pay contributors/creators, rather than steal from them (slightly hyperbolic, but you get the gist)
fergie··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
I am slightly on the fence about this. If the goal is simply to provide a good platform for people to create and share information with each other, then it shouldn't matter if the wiki is indexed in Google or not, in fact "invisibility" might even increase the quality of contributions.

OTOH if the goal is to monetize other people's contributions then yes, I totally get why the "Google jail" would be bad for that, but I'm just not sure that its a cause worth fighting for- that road basically leads to a new Fandom.

fergie··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
I don't know. Something just feels... "off" about it?

If you were so inclined you read equivalent stuff in the Telegraph every week, so why go after DHH and his projects so enthusiastically? It just feels like there is something else going on.

fergie··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
Does DHH actually deserve to be cancelled, or Omarchy "defunded"? I just read the OOTL on Reddit, and I have to say that I am not entirely convinced. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1oa74wh/im_out_of_th...
fergie··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
I'm not totally sure about the specifics since despite being an engineer, I cannot distinguish electricity from witchcraft. That said, I do know that if you want to charge your phone from your dynohub you need to ideally have some sort of powerbank in the middle.
fergie··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
I'm suprised that the author didn't consider dynohubs which were also a thing in back in 2011, and are getting slightly better all the time.
fergie··on Serve Markdown to AI Agents with Accept Headers
Unless I'm missing something here, this is all wrong. Markdown is OK, but for a variety of reasons, HTML is much better.

What you _should_ be doing is ensuring that your page works with screen readers. That simultaneously solves any kind of machine-readability issues and also makes your website accessible for the blind.

fergie··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
Are you a bot? Are you sure that you are answering in the thread that you meant to?
fergie··on What's new in Emacs 31.1
Have also struggled with this- would be great to see a fix
fergie··on Over 170k Nonprofits Lost All Their Data. Is Microsoft to Blame?
Meanwhile, my Flickr account still has my pics despite threatening to delete them for like 15 years.
fergie··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
The irony here is that ABC is the platfrom doing the rage-baiting.
fergie··on Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents
I use it (sbx), but I don't 100% trust that it actually works, and I would prefer something open source where the limits of the sandboxing could be tested and explored.

Maybe we should just ssh into separate development machines to ensure real and verifiable sandboxing? (as was totally standard before Docker became a thing)

fergie··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
To be fair- one of the interesting things about TikTok is how it rewards good commenting. It seems to bury negative commentary and reward positive commentary with the result that the comment field is generally some combination of genuinely insightful and hilarious.
fergie··on Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest
But surely the openapi spec is more mature and widely adopted?
fergie··on Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest
It does seem like a return to RPC/REST over HTTP (maybe I am missing some subtleties), which makes sense to me since I never really understood the advantage that MCP bestowed.
fergie··on Read the novels and forget everything else
> O’Brian’s ear for dialogue produced some of his finest comedy. From The 13 Gun Salute (1989):

>

> “A lovely young woman indeed, Heaven,” said Jack. “Mrs Heaven, if I do not mistake?”

> “Why, sir, in a manner of speaking: but some might say more on the porcupine-lay, the roving-line, if you understand me.”

> “There is a great deal to be said for porcupines, Heaven: Solomon had a thousand, and Solomon knew what o’clock it was.”

>

> Or from The Yellow Admiral (1996):

>

> Stephen nodded, and with a curiously knowing look, his head on one side, he asked, > “Can you foretell the dark of the moon with reasonable accuracy?”

> “I believe so,” said Jack. “Her motions are of some importance in navigation you know, and we learn them quite early.”

I didn't get either of these jokes.

fergie··on Slate EV truck starts at $24,950
Is this an actual think that is actually going to happen? I really want a simple notech ev.
fergie··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
Wait- wut!?
fergie··on Israel targeted Gaza children resulting in genocide, UN inquiry says
Boycott. Divestment. Sanctions.
fergie··on Peter Thiel's private society attendance list leaked via hard-coded HTML
Having thought about it, I wonder if Klein, Ferris and maybe some of the others were there to give talks.
fergie··on Peter Thiel's private society attendance list leaked via hard-coded HTML
Interesting to see that the progressive journalist Ezra Klein was in attendance. Also Kaja Kallas. Not quite sure what to make of that.
