ferdowsi··on US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago
So silly that it's exactly what happened during the Great Depression.
ferdowsi··on Another Round of GitHub Layoffs
More like companies are reducing scope to focus on key profit centers or initiatives, making product managers and designers easy targets for layoffs.
ferdowsi··on Don’t teach during code reviews
The vast majority of questions around quality that end up surfacing in code reviews can be much more easily settled by commonly shared tooling that enforces organizational style and security practices. Leaving "best practice" up to the code review stage just ends up allowing senior engineers to demand code that they themselves would write, not what's best for an organization.
ferdowsi··on Don’t teach during code reviews
Agreed. Too many "senior engineers" fail to recognize when they are simply venting their territorialism by nitpicking in code reviews. The role of a good manager is to restrain these tendencies.
ferdowsi··on Netlify acquires Gatsby
Strange time to do an acquihire given that Netlify just had a round of layoffs.
ferdowsi··on Netlify acquires Gatsby
The statement doesn't say how much Gatsby was acquired for. Hope that Gatsby equity holders weren't bought out at a steep discount, given the current macro situation.
ferdowsi··on Google’s Fuchsia OS was one of the hardest hit by last week’s layoffs
I'm sympathetic to all those who lost their jobs, but I'm a bit baffled that 400 people were working on this. Can someone enlighten me as to why so much headcount was required by this project?
ferdowsi··on Amazon to Lay Off over 17,000 Workers, More Than First Planned
No, my parents were immigrants and I have multiple relatives who came to the United States as children and gained residency.
ferdowsi··on Amazon to Lay Off over 17,000 Workers, More Than First Planned
How did you go from 9 to working age without getting residency in the US or another country?
ferdowsi··on Htmx in a Nutshell
I'm curious about htmx, but all of the HTML mini-syntax very similar in aesthetic to Angular 1.0, which was pretty quickly supplanted by React. What excites people about htmx? Do people like the mini-syntax but dislike the ceremony of state management?
ferdowsi··on Using Rust at a startup: A cautionary tale
Not very convincing when "git gud" is the common response to Rust's exuberance towards needless complexity in use cases that it doesn't fit well in (like CRUD applications)
ferdowsi··on Using Rust at a startup: A cautionary tale
Rust advocates want us to believe that Rust can effectively replace all of the use cases of those languages, so it's totally fair to group them.
ferdowsi··on Using Rust at a startup: A cautionary tale
I'm glad we're here. More and more organizations are going to have serious buyers regret after being sold a bad bag of goods by all of the Rust hype.
ferdowsi··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
Recruiters are salespeople. Toxic positivity, undue flattery, etc are all part of their toolbox. It's ultimately on the candidate to perform due diligence on the organization, like with any product.
ferdowsi··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
Their CEO compensation is mostly equity, which has dropped like a stone in the past year.
ferdowsi··on Layoff-sucks: Helping laid-off people find their next job
> This list is an aggregation of public layoff lists where people voluntarily signed up, plus people who sign up through us.

You should be actively getting the consent of these people on these lists. They consented to have their info in lists created and shared by colleagues, not as part of your service.

ferdowsi··on The coming long-run slowdown in corporate profit growth and stock returns
Bonds are back. TIPS bonds are now yielding around 2% real (not nominal). Treasury bills/notes are yielding above 4% nominal across much of the yield curve.
ferdowsi··on Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by 75 basis points for the third time
I'd disagree that it's a good time to buy now, as prices are still high. But if prices start to decline substantially it will be a good opportunity, as you can refinance a high rate mortgage during low rate periods (like many people did in the last few years)
ferdowsi··on Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by 75 basis points for the third time
A substantial chunk of the tech industry are speculative zombie companies that are built on the edifice of zero interest.
ferdowsi··on React I love you, but you're bringing me down
Funny that this whole hooks mess could have probably been better resolved with investment in developing optimization patches for v8 rather than attempting to "fix" React
ferdowsi··on Phorge: Going Public
Exciting stuff! Phabricator was one of the better project/dev management systems I've interacted with and I'm glad to see developer energy behind maintaining and improving it!
ferdowsi··on Zig, the Small Language
I would choose Zig because Zig has a much more approachable learning curve and Zig code is eminently legible compared to Rust code and it's overly complex type system.
ferdowsi··on Pypi.org is running a survey on the state of Python packaging
Nothing will improve as long as the Python powers insist on packaging being an exercise for the community.
ferdowsi··on Juul Labs to pay $438.5mn to settle underage vaping investigation by US states
Cigarette smoking has been declining for decades and will be continue to dive as boomers die out. All of the anti cigarette campaigning has been effective.
ferdowsi··on Cloudflare lobbied FTC to stifle security researchers
Reminds me about how yall had "no idea" that you had banned benchmarking. Remarkable how much leaders can not know about their company's operations!

ferdowsi··on Zig is now self–hosted by default
Pypy is mostly written in a restricted dialect of Python (rpython), not pure python. They're substantively different.
ferdowsi··on Can the Visa-Mastercard duopoly be broken?
The credit card companies strongly push merchants to adopt EMV chips by shifting liability for chargebacks onto merchants who are still using magstripes. I don't think I've seen a non-chip capable terminal in the last year.
ferdowsi··on We Halved Go Monorepo CI Build Time
The sharing of service contracts and their shared dependencies is a difficult problem to solve by itself. There's companies trying to make money off of the problem (buf). Monorepos solve the problem out of the box.
ferdowsi··on On Java/JVM: Loom and Thread Fairness
The Twitter discussion mentions this:

> We can forcefully preempt virtual threads at any safepoint poll point

What is a "safepoint poll point"? A sleep call?

ferdowsi··on Adapting to Endure – Sequoia Capital [pdf]
They predicted COVID in 2008?? Why didn't they warn anyone?

(it isn't the same deck)
