ferdbold··on Many Canadians are living on credit rather than staying within their means
Yes! It was called Family Economics, and was by far one of the best classes I've ever had.

They even taught you basic cooking and sewing. Our final cooking exam consisted of every team of 2 students being given 20$ and an hour and a half to go to the grocery store across the street, buy ingredients for a pizza and then cook it, without assistance from the teacher. You were graded on budget, teamwork, time taken and the quality of the cooking.

I still think that is a genius idea for an exam.

ferdbold··on StarCraft Remastered
It does use the same engine as StarCraft II. It originally started as Blizzard All-Stars and was supposed to be a custom map for the SC2 arcade, but the team ran into technical roadblocks that pushed them into making HotS a separate game.

I really like what they've done with progression here. You still kind of get the standard RPG linear progression with armor upgrades, but it's the preparation aspect of the gameplay loop that really shines for me.

ex.: You get to a new region, something in the environment prevents you from exploring easily (for instance, cold). You can either tough it out and spend a lot of time/resources, or return later once you've acquired some meals/weapons that help you deal with the situation. I see this system as a really clever alternative to classic logarithmic power creep curves.

ferdbold··on Welcome to Glitch
Oh god no. I tried that same "realtime collaboration" feature with c9.io, and it quickly becomes a huge PITA when it's time to test your changes. If anyone is writing midsentence, you have to ask everyone to stop writing so you can test out your stuff, or you'll be swimming in syntax errors. It just doesn't work. Unless, of course, those guys here had an epiphany on to how to solve this problem.

And of course, there's the obvious huge caveat of having other live cursors dancing around ruining your concentration. I like it when editing documents, but I feel like there's just no point in doing it on a source file.

ferdbold··on Google’s not-so-secret new OS
You could argue that webpages were never meant to host the kind of rich experiences and workflows native applications are known for. We just made it that way through years and years of momentum.
ferdbold··on Disney dumps youTube star for anti-semitic content
The main joke, as explained by PewDiePie, was to "prove that the modern world is crazy and will do anything for 5 dollars". I don't think the point of it was to flaunt his riches on poor Indians, and as such I don't find it nearly as offensive as you do.

I agree the execution is a bit tasteless though. He could have done away with the nazi stuff without changing the premise.

ferdbold··on Show HN: A site that spots bullshit
I'm just getting the top menu with a blank page on every link. no JS errors, no failed requests, just nothing.
ferdbold··on What’s up with Firefox?
Well they do own the iPhone. Whether or not the "iPhone browser engine market" itself is a thing within the greater "mobile browser engine" market is kind of a grey area.
ferdbold··on The Steam Controller Configurator's Untapped Power
Can confirm. I play Final Fantasy XIV as a non-steam game with my Steam Controller and don't lose any features, including the ability to share mappings with the community. As a nice plus, it even works in the launcher which is a separate process, so I can fully play from the couch without fiddling with my computer (most of the time!)
ferdbold··on Crafting a high-performance TV user interface using React
True, but that's aside the point. React, along with others, exists to solve an architecture problem that regular HTML/CSS/JS is notorious for.
ferdbold··on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition (Linux) Review
Eh. The first thing I tried to do was run a Webpack build for my pet project, ran into the uv_interface bug [1], got annoyed fast by the lack of terminal features cmd.exe has always been infamous for, and quickly lost interest.

ferdbold··on Amazon sells out of the NES Classic Edition in less than a minute
We're not talking about "smart and clever individuals" here. We're talking about scalper bots gaming the system by buying all of the product literally seconds after the seller flipped the switch. This isn't fair for the consumer at all as the product has literally been taken hostage by some third-party with unfair advantage. It's the 21st century equivalent to plundering trade routes.

Also, I don't think the nature of the product has any influence on the morals of the practice, I find it despicable no matter what is being sold.
