fercircularbuf··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
We have the power to change this
fercircularbuf··on What even is an OS now?
Out of curiosity, what definition of "intelligence" are you using when you say that an LLM doesn't have it?
fercircularbuf··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Gorgeous! You're an amazing photographer.
fercircularbuf··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Wow. Thank you for offering a portal to this other world through your beautiful writing.
fercircularbuf··on Compressing a Flag to 11 Bits
or treat the triangles as if they were part of a larger white flag?
fercircularbuf··on Compressing a Flag to 11 Bits
you couldn't dedicate one of those bit patterns to nepal?

fun stuff

fercircularbuf··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
Nice. This makes me want to play a number of games as the bad guy.
fercircularbuf··on Open-source 3D anatomy explorer: 2,234 selectable BodyParts3D meshes
thank you for the laugh
fercircularbuf··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
Yeah, I pay for youtube so I don't have to watch ads, but then youtube creators at some point all decided to jump on the bandwagon of interleaving ads into their content. Many are kind enough to make it easy to jump ahead to when the ad is over, but man, I would much prefer they set up a patreon or just let me pay them through youtube's own UI. Incredibly annoying.
fercircularbuf··on GPT-6 Astra
That is the task they are constructed to perform, but that's just an output, not the inner workings of what's happening to arrive at that next token. You can give a human the same constrained task, but the output alone doesn't a human mind make.
fercircularbuf··on Mamdani bans AI in NYC schools
I should clarify that when I wrote plausible I meant the societal aspects you touched on in your second point. As long as we are human, we will continue to experience our imperfection and continue to be prone to giving in to our base desires. And of course one group's culture shapes their ethics differently than another group's. Ethics is, after all, arbitrary. But one could still look at Star Trek and imagine a society where people's needs are met better than they are now, where we have systems in place to prevent a complete erosion of society better than we have now, where the basic principle of not exploiting others for personal gain is taught better than we teach it now, where we don't tolerate those that violate that principle.

You will still have hate. People will still kill. But one could look at Star Trek and imagine it's plausible to live in a society that doesn't tolerate school shootings or the systemic breakdowns that led to that.

fercircularbuf··on Mamdani bans AI in NYC schools
Star Trek is a plausible future I'd like to live in. It depends entirely on education, cultural values, and ethics. It's a future worth striving for, real or not.
fercircularbuf··on Evidence of Fraud in an Influential Study About Procrastination
I share your enthusiasm for this. Creating a map of the most influential research across all the fields to identify the highest priority work, any work replicating that work or validating that work by building from it would be a good start. Ideally funded by governments, but institutions, companies, and individuals could put up bounties for replicating particular research.
fercircularbuf··on The turbulent AI era is here
You will most certainly not have food, health, or security in your scenario.
fercircularbuf··on The turbulent AI era is here
source for the first statistic?
fercircularbuf··on Scientists release biggest 2D map of the universe
Wow, this is humbling
fercircularbuf··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
Can you elaborate? In the spirit of the rules of HN I'm trying to assume good faith and trying to conjure the strongest plausible interpretation of what you wrote, but I'm drawing a blank.
fercircularbuf··on Don't be a meat proxy
Your response to them is understandable, but surely more communication, not less, is the way to go to fixing the root cause of this problem.
fercircularbuf··on Don't be a meat proxy
It's ironic that your usage of "the kicker" invoked ai slop vibes even though I'm sure your post about ai slop was not itself ai slop.
fercircularbuf··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
I love this. Thank you for sharing.
fercircularbuf··on Please stop the AI confidence theater
My broader team organized a 2 day hackathon and created teams of 4 each with a mix of engineers, designers, data scientists, admin, localization, and project managers from across the team and gave us 5 pain points our product was experiencing and let us loose. The amount of leverage AI tools give small interdisciplinary teams to apply their existing skill sets is kind of crazy. Lots of very impressive demos, several of which were nearly shippable and provided real value.
fercircularbuf··on Jira Is Turing-Complete
Not surprising if you've worked with their automation flows in-depth before. What's surprising is how awful their automation flow tools are to work with. Feels like programming in assembly to accomplish what you want.
fercircularbuf··on In Japan, the robot isn't coming for your job; it's filling the one nobody wants
Japan has a very low cost of living. Work/life balance, however, is not good. And neither is the increasingly hostile immigration policies.
fercircularbuf··on Ordinary Lab Gloves May Have Skewed Microplastic Data
I don't believe the point is to construct a blank without them. Rather, the point is to capture what is already there (contaminants) so you can calibrate during the real sample.
fercircularbuf··on Learn Claude Code by doing, not reading
I love the pedagogical approach here and the ability to easily hone in on your level before diving into content. Your approach would work really well for other subjects as well.
fercircularbuf··on Drawvg Filter for FFmpeg
This could be a great and easy way to add annotations to technical instruction videos in a way that is self-documenting and programmable.
fercircularbuf··on Anthropic chief back in talks with Pentagon about AI deal
Lately it seems there are so many poor role models with so much power. It's really disheartening to say the least.
fercircularbuf··on Diode – Build, program, and simulate hardware
This is really terrific!!!
fercircularbuf··on How Taalas “prints” LLM onto a chip?
I thought about this exact question yesterday. Curious to know why we couldn't, if it isn't feasible. Would allow one to upgrade to the next model without fabricating all new hardware.
fercircularbuf··on Show HN: A word game a friend and I built. How did we do?
Thank you!
