feniv··on Show HN: Journal Your Life as Data with Thyself.io
I totally understand. I'm the kind of person who keeps a diary inside an encrypted true-crypt folder, so security and privacy have been my primary concern from day one. The main reason I'm deploying this as a web-service rather than a downloadable app is so that you can track things from anywhere (without having to be technical enough to manage your own servers). It's much harder to do that with excel or true-crypt, even if you use it with things like google-docs or dropbox.
feniv··on Show HN: Journal Your Life as Data with Thyself.io
Sure! I can release it as a library if there's interest. It's basically a go-client querying a redis instance which has been pre-fed with the NLTK categorization for most common words (about 8000 or so).
feniv··on TimelineJS: build visually rich interactive timelines
It would be nice if the duration of the "slide" animation was based on the time difference between the two slides. This adds some implicit context to the timeline. Things that happened back-to-back will appear quickly (like 300 ms) whereas things with a long time gap in between will appear slowly (2-3 seconds).
feniv··on 10 Months at Harvard, Quantified
See Nicholas Felton's work for a more design-oriented approach to personal-statistics. He has an extensive report for most years since 2005.

feniv··on Show HN: Thinkerous - Collaborative ideation and think tank
Oh wow! This looks awesome. It's basically a collaboration/connection platform for developers, designers and businessmen. I've seen a lot of other sites attempt to do this, but they fall short of their goal and ends up being incredibly complex (Example: Hit Record by the actor Joseph Gordon Levitt). Based on what I can see (great use of the animated example BTW) thinkerus has a clearer vision and better execution to maybe make this work.

Good luck! I've signed up and look forward to using it.

feniv··on Contad: SVG + CSS3 craziness
Took a while to load but it scroll surprisingly smoothly. The sign-up button takes me to a wikipedia page about contextual advertising. Is that intentional?

And for those who can't view the project, try the post about it (from their homepage) : http://www.freeger.com/project.php?projectid=174

feniv··on Show HN: Koi.io
On a positive note, the front-end design is pretty good. I like the sketch on the header; it explains the concept pretty succinctly. Most of the page is responsive, but the menu isn't visible on small windows. Other than that, just fix your security issues (sanitize all inputs server-side) and you should be good to go.

Good luck!

feniv··on Narrato – a personal journal you won’t give up on
Thanks for the feedback!

I have a super-simple REST API setup for the site (documentation isn't online yet), so if you can roll out your own service how you like and use my endpoints for the storage/synchronized access.

feniv··on Narrato – a personal journal you won’t give up on
I've also been working on another journal app: https://thyself.io (though it's not quiet ready for prime-time)

Like you said, building the habit is the hardest part, but this type of introspection really has it's benefits once you get going. I've been keeping a diary for years as just a word file in a truecrypt volume. Most of the apps I found in this market were trying to be more of a blogging/sharing platform rather than a private journal.

feniv··on Building an API with Go at Microco.sm
My experience has been pretty similar: Go is perfect for building high performance APIs. A lot of the library infrastructure is still in early stages.

One suggestion: Don't bog down your application server with serving static files (Slide 7. favicon and robots.txt). I put all of my css, js and image files in a /static sub-directory and configured nginx to serve any URL starting with /static without hitting my go-server.

feniv··on CppCMS – High Performance C++ Web Framework
That would be biased towards the frameworks named as some common word (like "go") being mistakenly marked as more popular than they are.
feniv··on The book that inspired the birth of reddit
Red Cliff is an awesome movie! I loved it because it focused on the strategy and politics of war, rather than the warriors or fighting.
feniv··on PivotTable.js: a JavaScript Pivot Table implementation
I'm working on a analytics-related project and this looks like something I can use! The input format is a little restrictive, but understandably so (since this is meant to be used for tabular data) The data I'm working with is a little more nested and looks like : [ { color: {r: 0, g: 0, b: 255}, shape: {name: "circle", description: "A round shape"}}, {color: {r: 255, g: 0, b: 0}, shape: {name: "triangle", description: "Has 3 sides"}} ]

than the example that was provided.

feniv··on I was struck by lightning yesterday—and boy am I sore
The odds of getting hit by a lightning is actually surprisingly high (1 in 3000 in an average lifetime). He should really go see a doctor though, since there's a 70% chance that he may be affected with serious long-term conditions.

feniv··on Show HN: An Open Source Number Game
You should polish this up and release it on the app store! It has that perfect mix of fun and challenge to keep you entertained when you're waiting for something and its conveniently easy to pick up and play also.
feniv··on An HN Alternative for Long-form Content
The layout makes all of the difference. The numbers aren't right next to each other on hackernews, so there's enough visual difference between the two.
feniv··on An HN Alternative for Long-form Content
It looks pretty nice! I would suggest that you get rid of the list numbering. It adds little value to the front page (knowing the exact rank of a post isn't very useful) and makes the points a little more confusing.
feniv··on How I'm Predicting Baseball Outcomes
Rather than waiting for data from future games, you should backtest on old data and see how it performs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backtesting).

feniv··on HN front page, 16000 visitors in a day, how many actually read the article?
If the article is long, I usually add it to instapaper or pocket to read later. The time spent on the actual site is low but I still engage with the content.
feniv··on Nokia's new Asha phones look gorgeous
The form factor is very... "unique".
feniv··on Travelling Salesman – Official Movie Site
I love hypothetical science fiction movies like this, but they so often get criticized for the improbability of their premise rather than admired for their vision.
feniv··on Why I'm Furious with Silicon Valley (2011)
The copyright reads 2001-2013, so I assume the code has evolved over time in design, but kept the old-school table layouts. If you look at the (admirably short) CSS file, most of it has to do with fonts and colors (and one block for drop shadows). All of the positioning is being handled by the table layout.

It's "bad" code by today's web standards, but was once considered normal so I'm going to have to side with the developer here since the site functions well and displays beautifully.

feniv··on Plot.ly: Matlab for the Web
Wow. Great UI! The selling point for me is the ability to simply plot points using python code in a browser.
feniv··on Show HN: My friend's project to simulate an entire C. Elegans
I like the "optional" hands-on challenges he listed for applicants in the jobs page. It may end up filtering out some talented candidates (not wanting to put in this much effort for one application), but it will certainly call out to the tinkerers and hobbyists who would do those tasks for fun anyway.
feniv··on Conception - a live programming environment experiment after 1 year
This is interesting not only for the way it lets you code, but for how it lets you pipe commands together graphically. Unix pipes are awesome and all, but chaining any more than 3 commands gets a little confusing with all of the parameters.
feniv··on The beauty of Git in Dropbox
It is also worth noting that Dropbox saves its own revision history automatically, just like Google Docs.
feniv··on Esquivalience
The related page for Trap Street (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trap_street) is also very interesting. It talks about "secret streets" cartographers put in their maps to protect their copyright.
feniv··on Recorded mouse positions replayed over music video [NSFW]
I wish the past-cursors were just rendered as dots because the barrage of pointers made it hard to keep track of my own mouse cursor (even with the larger size and contrast).
feniv··on A KPI dashboard for early-stage SaaS startups
If anyone else is wondering what the acronyms stand for:

KPI : Key Performance Indicator

MRR : Monthly recurring revenue

CAC : Customer Acquisition Cost

CTLV : Customer Lifetime Value

ARPA : Average monthly recurring revenue (MRR) per customer

feniv··on Using AngularJS at Localytics
I've been using AngularJS for a few months on a side project of mine and it greatly helped move a lot of the code complexity to the client side. Hooking it up with a REST API was simple and got rid of almost all of the server side rendering.

Here's a particularly useful sample app, implemented in both Angular as well as Backbone.
