felixheikka··on Show HN: I made an app to help you find problems with real demand from Reddit/X
Previous Show HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42430923 I can easily say that Buildpad is significantly different to what it was back then. It was essentially just a chat interface back then with different phases. I’ve changed the workflow now to have a canvas, new phases, more sources for validation, research page for validating demand with your target audience, new tools, etc.

No problem. We kept the MVP free because we wanted to get more people through the door who could provide the valuable feedback we needed.

It wasn't until around 150 users that we launched on Product Hunt and got our first paying customers.

For the curious, my SaaS can be found here https://buildpad.io

It works well for products targeting founders since they're very active online. However, there's no problem to find social media communities of gardeners, lawyers, content creators, etc., to be active in.

Not everyone who gave feedback ended up being an active user, but they were all part of our target audience. Otherwise their feedback would've been quite irrelevant.

"Feels like a group of people agreeing to follow each other on social media so they can tell others they have X followers." made me laugh not gonna lie, but it's actually a nice community of founders. Currently at 140k members.

Hey everybody,

7 months ago we launched Buildpad on Product Hunt and ended up in #4 place.

The top 3 products were all VC backed companies that spent a lot of money to get their traffic. My co-founder and I never raised any money and the only reason we managed to claim a top 5 spot was because the community got behind us and supported us.

So today, 7 months later, we’re hoping that we will be able to do it again.

Let's make Product Hunt a place for bootstrappers again. We appreciate every bit of support we can get to take on the corporate giants.

felixheikka··on You're overcomplicating it. Just solve a real problem.(Got my SaaS to $3,6k MRR)
My co-founder had a $30k MRR SaaS before this.

We're co-founders of https://buildpad.io

We're hoping to help founders with the problems they experience on their journey of building products.

I've been there myself in the beginning and I've made the mistakes. Sharing what I've learned from my experience is the least I can do to help those who are starting out.

And if the people who read the posts need more practical help, then they can get that by finding out about our platform.

So, I'm hoping to help people with a bonus of having some check out our platform.

A fair exchange in my opinion, but maybe I'm wrong.

Glad you liked it. We use Stripe for subscriptions.

Absolutely. Idea validation and continuously gathering feedback from users is something we've focused a lot on, and it's made all the difference. What makes the problem real is that a significant amount of people actually experience it and are willing to pay for a solution.

felixheikka··on My app makes me $2,700/month after 6 months
Yes it's the same app, but like I said in that post we reached $2,000 revenue, not MRR (monthly recurring revenue).
felixheikka··on Talking to people before building took me from failed projects to $9K in revenue
Thanks for the feedback! I'm not used to writing on HN so it's good to know.

I prefer to look at reality here instead of an analogy.

The reality is that I get on calls with customers almost every week who tell me how Buildpad has helped them shape and build their products. Many of them are very happy with the help they get. We have multiple founders who have built and launched their products with Buildpad, and we have founders who have started earning money from their products built with Buildpad.

I find that this is more important than the story leading up to the creation of Buildpad.

Now, you're free to be skeptical of our approach, but as I mentioned, my brother has previous experience building a successful business.

It helped us a lot in narrowing down what the actual problem was. Getting confirmation from real people that the problem existed and what their feature requests and objections were also helped us a lot with the direction to take the product in.

felixheikka··on Growing my SaaS from 0 to 4k users in 5 months – what worked for me
Nice investigation. We did reach $2,200 revenue within two months. We also reached $1,000 MRR within two months. There's a difference between revenue and monthly recurring revenue. You think posting about my journey two times in 60 days and doing a show HN post is a lot? He's done the same plus one post.
felixheikka··on Growing my SaaS from 0 to 4k users in 5 months – what worked for me
No problem! It took some extra effort. We had to post it a few times in different subreddits to get people to respond. What helped us though was offering feedback on their projects in return.
