felixg3··on Smallest particulate matter air quality sensor for ultra-compact IoT devices
This is Bosch and not some random startup. It’s for sure a substantial technical breakthrough of integration, miniaturization, and if coming from Bosch, certainly enterprise and clinical-grade ready.
felixg3··on Show HN: Tritium – The Legal IDE in Rust
Super interesting. Working in consulting, often with corporate lawyers. Will check it out.

Don’t forget Garching with SAP/Siemens.

Unfortunately very specific to QWERTY layouts:(
felixg3··on HID Remapper
Do you have a suggestion for a Bluetooth HID bridge? To use Bluetooth mice and keyboards with a generic dongle that presents as a usb HID to the computer, similar to how apple does peripheral support?
felixg3··on Prevention of HIV
Hi, I wanted to clarify here that I don’t have „puritanical views“ on human sexuality, but I am aware of my bias and wanted people to give me further information. I could already „smell“ that I was wrong with my perception, hence the comment. I didn’t want to cause any hurt with my questions, please assume naïveté and not malice.
felixg3··on Prevention of HIV
There are people announcing their PrEP status on dating apps so they can raw dog with strangers? Have people forgotten that there are plenty of STD besides HIV? I think this is highly problematic and lifestyle PrEP seems to be counterproductive as a public health measure.

But I am open to arguments that I’m wrong. It’s possible that I am biased as a monogamous heterosexual who has grown up in a culture where sex without condom, especially outside committed relationships, is generally frowned upon and 1980-1990s HIV scares are still in the consciousness of people.

felixg3··on Ryanair wins screen scraping case against Booking.com in US court ruling
Very interesting. A flight from Europe to Sydney, for example, is 1150€ round trip.
felixg3··on Mice live longer when inflammation-boosting protein is blocked
CRP, Calprotectin are easily measurable, not so sure TNF-Alpha and Interleukins?
felixg3··on The Greatest Educational Life Hack: Learning Math Ahead of Time
As a victim of Kumon I am still traumatized from Vieta's formula to establish relationships between the coefficients of a polynomial and sums and products of its roots.

I stuck with it for 6 months during self study and now I see it everywhere in the world.

felixg3··on Booting Linux off of Google Drive
That makes sense. I once got falsely identified as a DJ, but it was just a YubiKey.
felixg3··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
You forgot cash pickup and delivery costs for big stores or sending two employees to the bank with the day’s revenue (that’s the cost a lot of cash-only merchants in Germany usually don’t calculate for). Also don’t forget the counting of the day’s cash, two employees 30 minutes each.
felixg3··on Adding a USB port to the ThinkPad X1 Nano (the hard way)
It’s an apple exclusive thing, as they seem to be the only implementer of a USB Bluetooth HID bridge which the Broadcom adapter essentially exposes in firmware. There are a few Bluetooth dongles with CSR chips that can be turned into USB HID interfaces with previously paired Bluetooth peripherals.
felixg3··on Netflix's bet on advanced video encoding
1080p Blu-ray vs Netflix 2160p Dolby Vision?

I‘d choose the blu-ray any day.

felixg3··on Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone
Interesting project. Just curious: why does it stop at 2013? Are the manuals not available, is it a licensing issue or just a project frozen in 2013?
felixg3··on ADSL works over wet string (2017)
Don‘t forget that Helmut Kohl was also sharing a bed with the television industry at that time when optical networks couldn’t transmit analogue television.
felixg3··on Novel attack against virtually all VPN apps neuters their entire purpose
Cloudflare Warp is free, I think - if you create a Zero Trust Organisation for free and configure the Warp client to use it, you can use unmetered Warp+ with Argo routing without charge.
felixg3··on Show HN: Brewer X, a native macOS client for Homebrew
What you could do is have one version for all buying customers, but you have a feature state depending on the purchase date. Customer X buys Version 1.1 on 2024-04-20 and receives all new features until 2025-04-19. after that, bug fixes and new versions are delivered, but new major feature additions require a license renewal after the cutoff date. So, it would be decoupling major features from the app version. I have seen some Apps doing that, for example Halide.
felixg3··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
-phobia implies irrational fear, while any hate for TikTok is very much warranted. ;)
felixg3··on Hardest problem in computer science: centering things
Which I find very interesting. I’ve seen that there are constructors in India that are very much capable of recognizing and correctly implementing the alignments, but you pay so so much more than the average constructors- and then you are often in a conundrum where you have to choose between paying market rate and getting equivalent precision, or to pay 5x market rate to get a very good standard.
felixg3··on 'We're the last bastion of rental': video stores resisting rise of streaming
There was usually a 700mb version available of films and one which was made for two disks. The quality difference was crazy!

felixg3··on Meta's Onavo VPN removed SSL encryption of competitor's analytics traffic
Windows applications can easily install TLS root certificates, which essentially all „anti virus“ tools (i.e. snake oil) do. On Linux, it’s obvious; if you’re installing something as root, you can add certificates. In that context, apple is doing something right and makes it rather tedious to install root certs
felixg3··on NetBSD 10.0 Released
Expect to configure your drivers manually and poor support for sleep on more recent devices. Otherwise, it’s pretty great!
