felix_nagaand··on We can no longer leave online security to the market
Failing to disclose a breach should be treated like covering up a crime. Companies are dissolved, fines levied, people go to jail, damages are paid.

Failing to address security vulnerabilities quickly, or publicize their existence and suspend operations until they're fixed is negligent and is most similar to reckless endangerment. Similarly, hiring inexperienced, unqualified, or otherwise knowingly incapable people to perform a job is negligence. Failing to know and perform what precautions one needs to take is likewise negligent. People go to jail, fines are levied, damages are paid.

A previously unknown exploit used to gain access to a company is like a car accident and should be treated as such. Company pays damages and moves on.

A treble damages multiplier with criminal charges and mandatory minimum sentences in the decades would be a rather effective deterrent. A breach can be just as devastating to someone as losing a partner or parent to senseless violence and should be punished in proportion to the number of victims. Fines are ineffective. There needs to be life sentences and company dissolution for incidents like Equifax.

The people who put politics aside may have had politics from both leading sides happen to them. I'm utterly disillusioned with both parties and have leanings that go in all directions. Many people just don't care enough to understand the failings of their side because it's safe in their community of equally deluded people.

For the 0.x% of people that breakout and exceed their demographics statistical expectations by orders of magnitude? Yeah, sure, that's true. What about for the rest of the population that doesn't? They're burnt out, disabled, addicted, ill, obese, unhappy, indebted, deluded, ignorant, and servile.

felix_nagaand··on What It’s Like Living As a Diagnosed Psychopath
I think this is a bit more nuanced. Humans rationalize ways to absolve themselves of feeling empathy for the sufferings of others. This is not an innate human behavior. (At least ive seen no anecdotal or published evidence of such.) what I have seen is people being taught to dehumanize others, usually following percieved wrongs (see hatfields v mccoys). Look at the way homeless people are treated. They need to just pull themselves up by their bootstraps, stop being mentally ill physically disabled addicts and get one of those impossible to live on jobs pushing carts at whole foods for minimum wage so we can stop being inconvenienced by their poverty and suffering on our way to our overpaid jobs or when we go shopping or out on the town. It's fascinating to juxtapose how children perceive the homeless versus how the media portrays them:

Children: why is that person so dirty? Why do they ask for money and food? Why do they hurt? Why are they talking to the air?

felix_nagaand··on Australians who won't unlock their phones could face ten years in jail
There seems to be a rather simple solution. Trials must occur within four weeks. Prosecution is not allowed extensions to this so long as the accused is charged with a crime and in custody or released on conditions. Any charges not tried for within thirty days are automatically dismissed, expunged, and the defendant paid compensatory damages out of the prosecutor's budget. Defendants may petition for limited extensions on the explicitly defined grounds of preparing a defense.

This will obviously never happen because it's far more lucrative to draw trials out for years.

felix_nagaand··on Machine learning links brain connectivity patterns with psychiatric symptoms
Uhm. A large number of people, especially children are subjected to psychiatric treatment that they do not request. Courts routinely order treatment for pre- conviction defendants. Schools routinely send under performing or 'difficult'students to psychologists for treatment. These are non- consensual relationships and a clear violation of the code of ethics. These practices taint studies the victims are included in. These forced relationships breed hostility for the field and further isolate the very people supposedly 'getting helped' by these systems.

felix_nagaand··on How Companies Make Millions Charging Prisoners to Send an Email
Young teens to thirty somethings that seem interested in social issues aren't terribly interested. This disparity is known as virtue signaling and was pioneered by religion, politicians, and most recently, business. Now it's even trickling down to poor people. It's fashionable to lament the tragedy of the socially poor. Fashionable in much the same way as handing out jobs to the incompetent because their skin is a certain color or their sex is outside the norm. These tactics do little to solve problems, but go a long way towards increasing social divides between percieved groups. Instead of granting jobs to those incapable of meeting the standards their "less diverse" colleagues have we should be rallying for universal health care, workers rights (regardless of protected classes), universal higher education/ trades schools that track straight from high school and are continually redesigned with knowledge of leading educational research, and a massive increase in public funding for pk-12 education that does not unfairly benefit self segregated communities by wealth as a result of land taxes.

The majority won't because they haven't the luxury of time to understand the consequences of the politicians being voted into office. Your average person doesn't actually understand the differences between a Republican and a Democrat. They assume the label that works for them socially and run with their herd. Both of which are aimed off the cliff by the inane policy makers elected on popularity over policy. This system works and the average person is too short sighted to see the cliff, at no fault of their own.

For the most part the average citizens do everything they should and a bit more. Sadly resources are mismanaged and citizens carry the burden because our system is collectively failing to stop bad actors at every stop.

Every good solution ive heard comes at the expense of higher taxes especially on rent seekers and high income/ wealthy individuals and families. Ignoring the political suicide of going after those classes, the entire proposal is a catch 22. How can these victims be expected to trust a politician when they've been taken advantage of by politicians their whole lives?
