feklar··on After 100 years World War I battlefields are poisoned and uninhabitable
Anybody know the status of the thousands of tons of chemical weapons the allies dumped in the ocean after WWII? Curious if those munitions are still dangerous
feklar··on Is Facebook Ready to Be the World’s Live News Network?
The written news is even worse, a gigantic live feed of what every idiot on Twitter thinks mixed in with exploding popup ads that capture your click if you're not perfectly precise 'Here's what @TotallyNotAPaidShill had to say about the latest political scandal' [Click Here to see 9 ways you can lose weight with Prolexitroll]
feklar··on Inside ISIS: Quietly preparing for the loss of the ‘caliphate’
Interactive map http://isis.liveuamap.com/

Latest map of Shirqat (near Mosul) where there is heavy fighting right now https://i.imgur.com/dxb7BHM.jpg Still months of fighting at least until ISIS loses their Iraq 'caliphate' look at all those towns/cities they still control like Hawijah.

feklar··on Body count rises as Philippines president calls for drug addicts to be killed
This extreme policy also comes with an amnesty program if you surrender to police, with rehab, work and welfare. It's how he cleaned up Davao by disappearing gangsters and offering the ones left this olive branch program.

China and Indonesia dissappear thousands of addicts and criminals every year too the only difference is it's not advertised in the media as a killing free for all. This guy also gave Indonesia the green light to go after Abu Sayyaf kidnappers basically inviting them to invade those autonomous islands.

feklar··on U.F.C. Sells Itself for $4B
Floyd was his own promoter and put up the insurance and paid his opponents. It could happen that a very popular fighter in the UFC decides to branch and hold his/her own PPVs if they have the capital to insure it, cover security, advertise ect.
feklar··on U.F.C. Sells Itself for $4B
Boxing is much more dangerous, you have to beat your opponent senseless for 12 rounds in the UFC there is a submission option to win the match instead of only strikes. Just check CompuBox stats for a 12 round match with hundreds of "power" strikes landed VS stats for a UFC 5 or 3 round match.
feklar··on U.F.C. Sells Itself for $4B
The Karate guys in the UFC and cleaning up these days like Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson.

Early MMA/UFC until recently was battle of the PEDs Royce was juiced to the gills in those marathon early matches.

Selling UFC right now was a good exit, the barrier to entry has fallen where competitor promotions can easily move in now since early UFC did all the arduous regulatory lobbying to legalize these matches and create a PPV market.

feklar··on Inside an L.A. OxyContin ring that pushed more than 1M pills
Prohibition is ideology instead of policy. I just want to see a sane policy with data to prove it is working instead of ideology which is never questioned by politicians or studied for it's effectiveness.

The tax money from legal drugs can be put into prevention and rehabilitation. We can measure the effectiveness of prevention strategies just like my current government measures their anti smoking and alcoholism prevention strategies.

Tax dollars made by my regional government from selling cigarettes went into a program here for a free long term supply of nicotine patches. This policy combined with other anti smoking initiatives have worked we now have the lowest rates of smoking in the country. Nicotine cessation therapy is proven to work. I don't understand why heroin or meth is not treated the same even when there is data that methadone does not work as well for treatment http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/vancouv...

The truly evil dealers, the violent street gangs who prey off the mentally ill and homeless addicts are impossible to bust because of how they have set up their operations to avoid prosecution by employing the desperate junkies to hold and sell small amounts of product 24hrs a day, while low level gangsters, who handle no evidence, run street security. The police if they arrest these addicts simply go to court for minor possession and are released the next morning. The low level gangsters are routinely arrested for violence while debt collecting or running off other gangsters and a replacement is there the next day. Sometimes they get them on conspiracy charges but it doesn't matter, they're hardened criminals who consider prison a cost of doing business and again somebody else replaces them and their operations change to adapt to a police crackdown status. Police have been fighting these gangs as long as I have been alive but the availability of narcotics remains steady. They have changed their policy to management of the drug war now, propping up one semi cooperative gang by turning a blind eye to their activities in exchange for intel on rival gangs, as to prevent a more violent and unstable gang they can't control from taking over and turning the streets into a warzone.

feklar··on Top White House Economist Dismisses the Idea of a Universal Basic Income
India, Kenya and city of Utrecht, NL have been doing basic income experiments for a few years now surely there must be data from that available somewhere.
feklar··on Inside an L.A. OxyContin ring that pushed more than 1M pills
There's a heroin shooting gallery here staffed by nurses and it proves keeping narcotics illegal is a complete farce. Out front at any given time of the day is a row of dealers openly selling junk to the junkies. Once in a while a new group of dealers will try to violently jack this lucrative business by causing a massive street gang war where countless people end up shot in the crossfire. Should just sell and distribute the drugs legally.
feklar··on New EU Proposals Seek to End Anonymous Bitcoin Trading
Webmoney is Russian paypal in that they seize accounts all the time and demand notarized ID if you move more than a few hundred dollars. Libertyreserve is long gone and the owner(s) in prison. They also seized accounts if you moved over $9k without ID.

Using BTC-e is essentially rolling the dice. The Russian/Bulgarian operators can disappear at anytime they like with the entire current volume they are anonymous and also not insured, existing on rep only which doesn't mean very much. They could easily put up a million worth of bitcoin as insurance somewhere held in a trust and refuse to daily trade over that insured amount, that they don't says they plan to just disappear one day.

feklar··on New EU Proposals Seek to End Anonymous Bitcoin Trading
They would go after p2p sales obviously starting with localbitcoins which is operated out of an EU country.

For IRC/forum trades they would do periodic crackdowns posing as phony buyers and arresting/fining the seller to scare away enough casuals that only a handful continue to offer it, effectively shutting down any threat of mass bitcoin adoption to their tax cartel.

feklar··on New EU Proposals Seek to End Anonymous Bitcoin Trading
The same reason why GNU Taler is anonymous https://taler.net/

The EU can still suck taxes from the transactions of Taler but at least they have no idea what you bought. Why should the payment middleman have a complete itemized dossier of your personal purchasing history just you and the merchant should share the details of the purchase beyond the total amount paid.

feklar··on Homeless in Seattle: The roots of a crisis
Bribes. The cops here used to find the most chronic bums who caused disturbances and offer them cash and a bus ticket to leave and never come back. Effectively makes it somebody else's problem but what can you do. Your block could all agree to pitch in and bribe him to leave then make the area less desireable for new replacement hobos to move in.
feklar··on Homeless in Seattle: The roots of a crisis
Vancouver also has a broken shelter system. There is too many completely insane people who are homeless, with drug addiction problems who stay at these shelters so nobody else goes there since it's dangerous. They sleep in tents or on the street in the open instead. There's also way too many rules, curfews and other nonsense. There's also rampant bed bugs, theft.. nobody in their right mind stays at a shelter.

What would really work is opening mental institutions and detox centers and moving those people into them and off the streets. Then the non addict homeless can actually get at services which currently are overloaded with chronic addicts and tent cities will disappear. That is of course until more homeless bus in from other cities without these services and the problem repeats itself.

The visible homeless I see everyday are crazy and are not there because of unemployment, they are there because some politician thought it would be a good idea to shut down the mental institutions and toss these people on the streets.

feklar··on Spain Runs Out of Workers with Almost 5M Unemployed
Does SF gave rent brokers you have to go through? Manhattan you have to pay first/last rent to a broker plus deposit you need around 8-$12k to sign any lease up front

feklar··on Mathematicians are chronically lost and confused (2014)
Where to begin depends on what your goal is, mine was to be able to complete Sussman's SICM book (and later, his Functional Differential Geometry book).

The book I used to do this was Advanced Calculus by Loomis & Sternberg because it covers classical mechanics, potential theory, differentiable (Banach) manifolds, differential equations, (multi)linear algebra, fundamental theorum of calculus and the Fourier transform. The exercises are not very difficult compared to a lot of other texts (Spivak's Calculus) so this is an accessible math book as I don't have any formal math training.

I also liked the Mathematical Preliminaries crash course in the Art of Programming Vol 1 because it led me to looking into probability which has turned out to be an infinite rabbit hole of discovery. (a grad students highly opinionated list) https://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/1F85VWN...

feklar··on Tails 2.4 is out
This is what happens when you write your own twitter.el and botch the UI
feklar··on Tails 2.4 is out
On their twitter they linked a container whitepaper by "fellow NCC consultant Jesse" guess I am mistaken.
feklar··on Tails 2.4 is out
Subgraph is meant to be used as an installed OS with hardened containers/grsecurity while TAILS is a live Debian system maintained by anonymous developers without any of the grsec patches or containerization.

If you really need to not have your ID leaked, like the UAE recently going after dissidents with state malware, you'd want to use something like Subgraph with a seperate firewall/NAT internal address as insurance (pref running OpenWRT or a BSD not the default proprietary lighthttp server 'admin portal' firmware running with full privs).

feklar··on Being privacy-aware in 2016
Locking doors isn't just to prevent burglars, especially if you live around bars. I don't know how many times a group of aggressive drunk football hooligans has got off the elevator on the wrong floor, then tried to get into my apartment thinking it is theirs or a friends. If my door wasn't locked I'd be confronted with 6-7 violent goofs in my living room @ 3am.
feklar··on Fasting-like Diet Reduces Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

feklar··on A New Threat Actor Targets UAE Dissidents
In the conclusion to this article "The Growing Trend of Impersonating Journalists" isn't really a new trend, Max Butler(Vision) used that trick to convince bank employees to click on his malware years ago. It's an old spear fishing method to pretend to have written a story about somebody or claim you're writing a book since it guarantees they click your bait.

UAE prisons, are also notorious hell holes devoid of any shred of humanity according to escort blogs who've been arrested there and forced to serve the mandatory 3 month sentence for prositution. People dying in the cells from lack of insulin or other medical treatment is common.

feklar··on A New Threat Actor Targets UAE Dissidents
There's also JTRIG https://theintercept.com/2014/02/24/jtrig-manipulation/

OEV https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-op...

And my favorite psyOps which is Military Memetics/Memetic Engineering only because there's a guy in the US Army in charge of 'Meme Warfare'. As for this community bikeshedding distractions and somebody coming along with bait to derail a conversation with illogical fallacies (trolling) isn't anything new happened on newsgroups since as long as I can remember.

feklar··on The Tor Project: Building the Next Generation of Onion Services
Tor's design document also warns a nation state level adversary who can view the whole network defeats any guarantees of anonymity. There's no way to know GCHQ/NSA aren't running 90%+ of bridges and exit relays either in addition to having a total network overview at the backbone level.

Tor was designed for strong anonymity guarantees in nations that aren't 5 Eyes Alliance ie: China, Russia, ect.
