feitingen··on FSF announces Librephone project
That's not entirely true.

Most PostmarketOS devices start out using LineageOS kernels, and many are atill using those.

Why not use PostmarketOS kernels on LineageOS?

The ultimate goals are different, but cooperation on upstreaming kernel work would benefit both.

feitingen··on Ytterby
I think the close proximity to the Swedish capital with easy access to educated geologists might be a factor.
feitingen··on Copper is Faster than Fiber (2017) [pdf]
The speed of light is also ever so slightly faster in twinax than in fiber(glass).

Not enough to matter in this comparison, but i thought I should mention it.

feitingen··on Reversible computing with mechanical links and pivots
For those unaware, MLC used to mean mean Two-level cell.

Quad-level is the current practical maximum.

feitingen··on systemd ParticleOS
Personally, it's not that the alternatives are so awesome.

It's when i meet against some awful design choices in systemd, like how it decides to wait forever rather than hard fail, and by wait forever, i mean wait for 30 seconds, no, 1 minute 30 seconds, no 5 minutes... you get it.

Or you can easily lock yourself out when there's a typo in /etc/fstab.

Or the hardcoded 5 minute timeout for sysv-generator: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/main/src/sysv-genera...

God forbid you used cgroupsv1 for anything when poettering unilaterally decided to punish everyone with a 30 second delay for using it.

If you stray off of the intended opinionated path, be prepared for the least user-friendly experience linux has to offer. You might even get some abuse from the developers if you try to ask for help, but they've probably toned it down since CoC became a thing (I hope).

feitingen··on systemd ParticleOS
I'm very curious about specifically what is it that it does for you that is so amazing, besides init that you can't live without?
feitingen··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
I have a seek thermal which plugs into my phone.

Very handy for checking for drafts and cold spots, and also checking the fuse box and other electrical for hot spots.

The resolution is not amazing, 206x156, but it's enough for this type of work.

I have a friend who is happily using a flir one, with a resolution of 160x120 at his day job as an electrician and it is also enough for checking for draft, water leaks insufficient insulation, etc.

feitingen··on Spacing the Cans
It's also nice to get raw peanuts and roast them in the oven before blending.
feitingen··on Nvidia Is Simulating a Copy of the Earth
The Aeolus mission: https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/missions/aeolus

> The Aeolus mission objectives were to provide accurate global measurements of winds from the surface up to 30 km

feitingen··on Nvtop: Linux Task Monitor for Nvidia, AMD and Intel GPUs
Collectd can also output stats to mqtt, from sensors, disks, network and others.
feitingen··on Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: 2023 Progress on Smooth Scrolling
I think in relation to touchpads, it allows for scrolling at smaller increments than 50px (without animation)
feitingen··on Better PC cooling with Python and Grafana
A square is closed and will probably result in a bubble of air being trapped.
feitingen··on Inside Windows Product Activation (2001)
Yes, testing on Edge and Internet Explorer.

The VMs were discontinued recently.

feitingen··on Google has removed Conversations_im from the Play Store
That's a bit funny since i get notifications on my phone from google assistant (which I've disabled) about birthdays of my contacts, and I've explicitly disabled contacts access for all google apps on my phone.

Feels like a slap in the face every time.

feitingen··on I looked through attacks in my access logs
I'm still getting crawlers looking for an old printer i got a letsencrypt certificate for.
feitingen··on In Europe, trains are full, and more are on the way
> The interoperability benefit is limited since you typically won't want to operate both Shinkanzens and local trains on the same rail.

> Having different gauges provides no real benefit.

The only place it would be beneficial to have the same gauge would be at stations, to have fewer, more flexibile platforms and smaller train stations.

feitingen··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Speak for yourself, I don't have anything else open.
feitingen··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
Some concepts seems to be permanently defined as a spelling error and will just be impossible to search for.
feitingen··on Goodbye Windows Mixed Reality, we hardly knew Microsoft's VR software
I always wondered what the enterprise customers were using it for. Is there some secret killer app or 4D excel I'm missing out on?
feitingen··on Zotero for Android available for beta tests
This is also self-reinforcing, since apps worth paying for are released on ios first.
feitingen··on The Linux graphics stack in a nutshell
I really hope not.
feitingen··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
> Apple closes exploits which allow jailbreaking, precludes it in the EULA. What more would you have them do?

Preventing jailbreaking is not a good thing, in part since that's what allows us to check on what Apple is doing on the device, in regards to privacy, security and e2e encryption. If nobody can check, do you suppose we just accept their statements about the device as fact?

feitingen··on Asciinema: Record and share your terminal sessions, the simple way
It's nice for recording sessions when connecting to other systems via serial or ipmi sol.

Sometimes it's nice to be able to go back and see recordings of boot logs, where timing is useful, and navigating bios screens or other similar user interfaces.

If it needs documenting it's nice to record it as you're doing it, and writing the documentation as you're rewatching the recording so you can copy paste the important moments.

It's not so nice to rely on only a recording as documentation.

feitingen··on Asciinema: Record and share your terminal sessions, the simple way
There is also the terminal app to play back the recording in the terminal.

I find that to be the most useful player.

feitingen··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
> Because cars give people more convenient and independent transportation then just about any other mode.

In the US, this is true.

In most European cities, you can just walk instead, or take the metro or a tram.

It's really convenient to just walk to where you want to go, and when the grocery store is a 10 minute walk away, you don't need to fill a car with groceries. Just go more often.

Need to go further? Clean and safe public transportation is often more convenient than having to drive yourself.

I really like being able to read a book on my way to work rather than paying attention to the road and making sure i don't kill myself or someone else.

feitingen··on Plastic bag found at the bottom of world’s deepest ocean trench
This is the reason. By far, most people in the Philippines live in poverty and anything affordable to poor people comein plastic sachets.

Instant coffee, shampoo, detergent, soap, almost everything is most affordable in a plastic sachet, and usually in very small amounts.

The detergent is enough for two small loads of laundry, the shampoo for two or three showers, etc.

This is combined with virtually no garbage handling, and often where there is garbage collection, it usually goes to landfills which are close to the sea and "leaks" plastic to the sea every time it rains or the wind blows.

Some places have started banning plastic shopping bags, but until there is an alternative or regulation to plastic sachet packaging, this problem won't go away.

feitingen··on AMD’s Phoenix SoC
Microsoft has a long history of refusing to document stuff. They also have a long history of being evil, so it's probably not interesting for them to document it to seem less evil.
feitingen··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
I bought the Google Play version and can confirm it's not the same as the F-Droid one.
feitingen··on Japan launches rocket carrying lunar lander and X-ray telescope
Definitely a tantrum. It's diluted tritium. It's almost a shame to throw it away.

It's hard to tell what the tantrum is really about.

feitingen··on ZFS for Dummies
Last time I tested performance (~2 years ago), zfs on luks performed better than zfs encrypted datasets, on sequential reads, almost twice as good. This was on particularly slow hard drives.

Not sure why, and I should probably make the test reproducable.
