feerfreeflight··on Douglas Hofstadter: Analogy as the Core of Cognition [video]
I made this: https://sisuonspeaks.com

Hebbian, analogies, agent monitoring and self pruning. Look at it or don’t, but I made it and I’m proud of it and I’m tired of marketing tactic-ese for self promotion.

For how it works, https://gist.github.com/adromero/e6a776e6a6100d53116f4053677...

feerfreeflight··on Gambling with our lives: AI researcher quits Anthropic with warning about safety
With respect, I think the distinction is irrelevant to the actual point. Whether the definitions are accurate enough means little to the actual problem, which is that we are rushing towards creating extremely powerful tools. Recorded (and arguably unrecorded) history seems to demonstrate the same pattern: inevitably, any tool will be put to use towards violence. I would argue that yes, it’s a tool and humans are the trigger, the same way that “guns don’t shoot people, people shoot people” is technically correct.

The real question then is: are human beings responsible enough, en masse, to wield these tools without restrictions? Would you let a toddler play with a loaded gun, even though without human action the gun is harmless? Maybe collectively we’re all little better, and eventually one of us is going to “pull the trigger” of ai just because it was shiny.

Ironically, I also don’t believe in regulation, unless that regulation is crushing and draconian. The only regulation that would seem to make sense is status quo anti ai, with only highly supervised research labs being able to interact with it. Clearly that’s unrealistic without the preceding calamity: millions had to die in WWI before we instilled a global taboo against chem weapons on ourselves. I don’t want either to happen (regulation or calamity), but I feel individually powerless to stop the relentless drive we (and I) seem to have in curiositying ourselves to death. So I’m stuck with all the rest of us, building SaaS apps and iPhone games.

Sure! I wanted to mimic the process of daydreaming on a car ride, where external input and inner monologue can mix.

I wasn’t planning on posting it yet, so I’ll have to get you a thorough follow up, but in a nutshell it’s: a continuously running 448-concept space (philosophy, cognition, art, nature, math) that occasionally “crystallizes” a group of 4 concepts via Hebbian learning and stochastic noise. Those concepts get sent to the LLM with minimal guidance beyond some safety guardrails and encouragement to be creative. It has access to a sandbox to produce essays, stories, music, “art”, and small python scripts. Self-updating memory system. Notes, essays, and artifacts can also be discussed with me through some outbox channels.

On top of that it’s got a separate academic philosopher + psychiatrist llm that critiques its work and has a regular cadence of “sessions” with it, as well as a research assistant bot who I talk to (but doesn’t interact with Sisuon) who has full project context and memory access. The sisuonspeaks site is a VERY abridged collection of Sisuon’s essays, along with analysis, commentary, forum posts, and a podcast…all created by, you guessed it, more LLMs.

feerfreeflight··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
An attempt at an artificial unconscious. Turns out it’s pretty hard to inspire an LLM to be creative.

Great work! I had wanted to do something like this for all the Star Trek series’ back when Netflix US had them up but never got around to it. Great to see a similar thought with a much cooler implementation.

Not to be pedantic, but isn’t the billionaire’s class wealth mostly derived from their ownership of an asset class that does draw from everyone, stocks?
feerfreeflight··on Blue Zones, where people reach age 100 at 10 times greater rates
Jarring that after years of lurking HN I come across a reference to someone I know personally. While I can’t speak to the legitimacy of the original cancer diagnosis, I can say that family oral history from long before the Blue Zone popularization is filled with this kind of story. Immigrants (usually first or second generation) returning to the island to get well. Anecdotal to be sure, and there are stories in the same vein about many old country birthplaces, but the supposed healthful qualities of the island have a long history, stretching back into antiquity.

Still anecdotal but more personal: the original immigrant generation that I descend from all died nonagenarians or over 100. There seems to be diminishing returns on that sadly, as each successive generation’s life expectancy seems to be more “normal.”
