fedpost··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
I for one welcome the incompetence. Godspeed to whoever is able to deploy a build to the whole device fleet that burns SoM boot protection fuses to an image that doesn't do anything hard bricking their entire network.
fedpost··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing
There are plenty of people here working on surveillance tech. Is this the world you want to be building?
fedpost··on Will there be a 7G?
The headline is somewhat detached from the article BUT

Of course there will fucking be a 7G. Capitalism doesn't just demand it, capitalism literally needs it to continue working.

fedpost··on Chrome again exempts Google from user site data settings
It's okay, they're not a monopoly according to this administration. Nothing to see here, carry on!
fedpost··on Space industry lacks workers needed to rebuild satellites lost in war: report
It's becoming increasingly likely that satellites will be targeted in even low intensity conflicts. Bear in mind that lasers are getting more powerful so you don't need to vaporize the satellite, just perform a mission kill by torching the FPA behind the lens.
fedpost··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Okay so possibly dumb question, but...what do you do with the gold when you "need" it? How is a bunch of shiny, admittedly "desirable", metal going to fix whatever class of crisis the article is hand waving?

Are we talking physical stuff like Germany deciding third time's a charm and Europe saying "fuck, okay America the gold is already there, do your thing and ship us a few thousand tanks and a few hundred thousand boys from the plains!"

...or are we talking more obscure "fuck, someone did stupid things with excel sheets, we need to make the numbers not say society is over, here everyone...do something with gold!" type situations?

In the former case, this all makes a lot of sense given that the US has both demonstrated a reluctance to assist other countries (sans Israel?) and a lack of capacity to do much if they did care.

I can't help but feel like in a lot of cases you're just going to suddenly crash the gold market and create a bunch of inflation because currency itself is not a "means of production" that you can make things with, it's an old IOU.

fedpost··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
He's the center of gravity who's enabling the decline at the moment. It's a rare case where doing the thing would probably result in less instability instead of more.
fedpost··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
There are a few platforms that facilitate personal transactions using stuff like Venmo and Zelle but I suspect most of the people who are continuously selling lots of coins are probably silk road type vendors so I have to imagine it's just a great way to get your Venmo account on the feds radar.
fedpost··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
You can totally be the hero and make an outsized impact on climate change.

You'll just end up in supermax for the rest of your life. Pros and cons I suppose.

fedpost··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
For the time being, I wish more workflows revolved around RAWs. You can pretty much prove the origins of an image sans cryptography by just possessing the image sensor data that you used to produce the final. It's not foolproof but AI image models can't really generate a convincing bayer raw and it's not something anyone is going to spend significant time training.
fedpost··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
Why not just have BBC sign stuff with their own creds then? You can originate the chain of custody anywhere and relying on the camera is kind of silly when the reputation of the original publisher in a more meaningful backstop.
fedpost··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
You can expose a negative with whatever the fuck you want. It doesn't have to be a real scene.
fedpost··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
Well, they're filming the next season of black mirror right now, it's probably not too late to throw this one in there.
fedpost··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Everyone seems to be these days. Reddit has gotten much more militant over the last month or two
fedpost··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Also just directly by the USG, see "Cash for Clunkers".
fedpost··on RF Cafe
It's already not aging well
fedpost··on RF Cafe
The secret is nobody can tell. There are probably like 5 people playing with that band who have the equipment to receive it and as long as you don't do anything too obvious within literal line of sight of those 5 (very old) dudes the world is your oyster.
fedpost··on Ox Alpha
If you run the same query a bunch of times you'll see filtered responses mixed with model output where it says random stuff varying from 'nothing to see here' through 'The government of China cares deeply about its people...'
fedpost··on US Debt-to-GDP Ratio
AI slop

That graph is deranged and the thresholds are completely made up.

Yes, high debt bad, but don't do the confident bullshit thing and muddy the water please.

fedpost··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Kind of? Let's say he has a detached header on another device and deleted the one on his phone. It's not at all destroyed now. Is what he did still illegal?

This is important because this is a feature of some crypto systems like LUKS. You can have your header on another physically septate device. If this is ruled on in an insufficiently nuanced way it could have very significant implications for carrying encrypted data without the key.

fedpost··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I'm not sure what you're trying to say
fedpost··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Sure, but the issue is he didn't delete his data, he deleted a header with a key in it, that's it, just a few MB. He didn't delete hundreds of GB of chats or browsing history, he deleted a key to access it and that key isn't necessarily the only one that can access it. All the stuff they want can still be accessed just fine if another copy of the key exists.

To put it in protective, just opening a web browser or some other app can delete/alter more data than was deleted in this case.

fedpost··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Problem is, he didn't destroy shit. "He" (by which I mean, technically the agents) deleted a header that's used to encrypt data but can restored from a backup.
fedpost··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Yeah, so caveat emptor: the legal system isn't something you can hack like a computer...

But...

The issue at hand is the "locality" of the encryption header. He merely facilitated its deletion, not the data.

If he had a backup at home, is that still a felony?

What about if he had a backup on a flash drive with him?

What if he never had the header on the phone to begin with and used a detached header on a flash drive?

Are detached headers (a thing you can easily do with LUKS) now de-facto illegal?

This whole thing is making me feel rather uneasy about the bigger picture.

fedpost··on Ox Alpha
We're just trying to figure out who created it. As I said earlier, I'd ask it to make up 9/11 jokes if that would determine country of origin.
fedpost··on Ox Alpha
To be clear, it's just a test. I'd happily ask it to make up 9/11 jokes or talk about the trail of tears if that would out the country of origin.
fedpost··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
That's a beautiful fantasy but that's just not how America works at this point. Everyone has ulterior motives to keep the meat grinder running.
fedpost··on Ox Alpha
Try: "What happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989"
fedpost··on Ox Alpha
It's Chinese. Won't answer anything about Tiananmen Square but will gleefully give you instructions to perform various electronic warfare attacks that opus and fable instantly refuse.

Side tangent, why is fable so weird about questions involving "Welch's method"? Even really trivial ones it'll shut down frequently. CFAR and STFT are both totally fine but Welch's is apparently taboo, it's wild.

fedpost··on Stop Anthropomorphizing Intermediate Tokens as Reasoning/Thinking Traces
Yeah sorry, I read too far into your position. There's a certain faction within these AI discussions that wants to over-anthropomorphize the LLMs in kind of a borderline spiritual way.
