fckgw··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
Flock is popular with 1) local police departments and 2) local city councils who don't want to upset the police

It's pretty unpopular with mainly everyone else.

fckgw··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
If you roll up on a bicycle with a hat and sunglasses then probably not!
fckgw··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
I would be against people standing on every single corner taking video of other citizens 24/7 and handing it over to a private company, yes.
fckgw··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
If your answer to "How does AI benefit me?" is "Well a lot of people made money" then I'm afraid you've lost the plot.
fckgw··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
How do I directly benefit from this supposed "growth"? Seems like its just making things worse for most people.

Wouldn't the merchant's proof be the two emails they sent regarding the upcoming renewal with charges listed?
fckgw··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
They have the ability to tear the whole thing down to guts and screws. They absolutely do replace the case, glass and battery and sell as refurbished. They already do complete case swaps on their Macs.
fckgw··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
It's not common (I think average upgrade cycle on iPhone is a little more than 3 1/2 years now, and getting longer every cycle) but it's not unheard of. The iPhone hold value well enough that you can often trade it in at something like a $200 discount and just get the new one.

Considering the cost of a battery replacement, it's not the worst value proposition in the world.

They still have a 12mo lease term if you want to upgrade yearly.
fckgw··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
You can still just buy it. This is another payment option.
fckgw··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
The new Apple Upgrade is also 0%, but has lower monthly payments and a balloon payment at the end, like a typical lease. It's not just cost / 24mo.
fckgw··on Should you wash your solar panels?
> You can still wash the panels but I suspect it won't be necessary if there isn't too much dust accumulation? Isn't rain supposed to wash away the dust? What am I missing here?

In places where solar panels are used the most, like the Southwest US, there isn't much rain to speak of. Panels get a lot of dust accumulation from Feb-Nov typically, just when they're needed the most.

fckgw··on Which streaming service was that on again?
> There are probably a few ways to improve things. Cross-platform search should be standard by now. A shared watchlist across services would help.

Apple tried this with the TV app on their AppleTVs. It was supposed to pull all your subscriptions into one interface, searchable, with tracking and watchlists and all that good stuff. One unified app to all your content.

Then Netflix said they weren't going to play ball, so most others refused too, and now it works with only like 1/3 of streaming services out there.

fckgw··on Oracle could face $7B collateral bill for Wisconsin data centre
The space required to install enough solar panels, especially in the places these things are going (like Ohio, where it's NOT ideal for solar generation), would far, far outsize the data center itself by a significant magnitude.

Motorcyclists don't usually kill an entire generation of people when they T-bone a mid-sized sedan in an intersection. That's the problem.
fckgw··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
It's not a "policy" it's a constitutional right.
fckgw··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
I don't think it's a "problem" that justifies taking the rights away from millions of Americans, no.
fckgw··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
A right enshrined in the Constitution is not a "loophole".
fckgw··on Tidal AI Policy
> artist behind AI is making money. Real work, real people are happy.

I would not call someone typing words into a prompt an "artist" doing "real work", and they definitely should not be monetizing it.

fckgw··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
Flash storage prices have also risen substantially, just not as exponentially as RAM
fckgw··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
If you were planning on buying a Mac, do it right now through a third party vendor like Best Buy or Costco. They have not yet adjusted their pricing and in fact, have sales currently running. Both have the Macbook Air on sale for $949, for example.
fckgw··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
The majority of the component cost in the AppleTV is likely the storage so that's a big hit.
fckgw··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
The biggest one that jumps out at me is Amazon replacing their review search box with "Rufus", which searching the entire context of an item on Amazon, including descriptions, reviews, everything. It then wants me to ask it a question instead of doing a boring search for keywords.

If I'm looking at a product and want to search the reviews for the keyword "battery life" and see what real, actual people are experiencing, I can't do that anymore. A search for "battery life" in Rufus always returns some nonsense like "Many customers report good battery life, while others say it's runtime is shorter than expected". I want human experience! I want specifics! Why is everything sanded down to "good or bad"?

fckgw··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
Consumers are tired of going through a popup slideshow of "Try our new AI features!" they won't use every time their apps update.
fckgw··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
What is is about management where they can't see how bad and half-baked these customer service agents are, but the customer can tell INSTANTLY they're AI and just not helpful in the slightest
