fcjqbuvjxpxml··on Whistleblower: NSA Targeted Journalists, Snooped on All U.S. Communications
Yes I do know how it works - my company produces the software that does this for your bank, your credit card and a bunch of 3letter agencies (hence the one-shot username). What we hand over is a big list of names that are 'linked' (for whatever degree of linked they asked for) to the terrorist/criminal/transaction in question.

The tenuous definition of'match' required by some of these customers is scary, two arabic surnames beginning with Al are assumed to have a 50% match for one agency, all chinese with the surname 'Ng' are the same person according to another!

I'm sure that somewhere in military intelligence somebody understands sifting for real patterns in this. But compared to the number of people who get refused loans, get extra security at airports or listed as 'persons of interest' the next time a child is abducted - all on the basis of a 6th degree of separation.

Hence solving the problem of associating a random set of symbols (representing an openid) with a real person by the much simpler problem of associating a random set of symbols (representing a public key) with a real person.

So are affiliates different from advertising? If I print an ad in a newspaper and include a coupon is that a presence in the state? I hope new York isn't home to any publishing or advertising companies - this could be really bad news for them.

What do you mean disaster? Politicians got contributions, consultants got paid, docklands flats got bought, civil servants got directorships. And the ground work was laid for the requirements of the next system to fix all the problems of the current one.
fcjqbuvjxpxml··on Tesco: 'Wal-Mart's Worst Nightmare'
They are a lot smarter than Sainsburys. I lived in Belfast when Sainsbury opened their first NI store. Their planning obviously just went Belfast=Capital=London so they stocked exactly the same high-end products they would in Earl's court, so 18 brands of extra-virgin olive oil but no bacon.

Tesco's system is smarter. There are 4 Tesco in Cambridge in different parts of town and all have a different type of stock to fit the local market even in such a small town.

Until the city decide that this should be zoned industrial and so can only exist 30miles out of the city in somewhere with no transit. Then the lawyers demand huge liability insurance Then DHS raid it because electronics=bombs
