fblp··on 9M Australians affected by Optus data breach
FYI optics is Australia's second largest telecommunications provider. This would be the worst known databreach in Australian history.

It is interesting that compared to identity theft announcements from many US corporations they are direct, apologize and state the authorities they are working with. I imagine there's less fear of the legal consequences of not having a tight response as the culture isn't as litigious.

fblp··on The abundance, biomass, and distribution of ants on Earth
For once i want to say that this article needs an in infographic to visualize the numbers
fblp··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Did you see this link? This provides an overview of anti trust laws regarding mergers https://www.ftc.gov/advice-guidance/competition-guidance/gui...
fblp··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Anyone here can lodge this simple form and I'd encourage you to do so. Especially if you think this merger will substantially lesson competition and stifle innovation lodge a complaint: https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/report-antitrust-violation

At a minimum, they will investigate this and make inquiries (typically within months) if they see a high volume of complaints.

See https://www.ftc.gov/advice-guidance/competition-guidance/gui... For more info on the relevant law :)

"Some mergers change market dynamics in ways that can lead to higher prices, fewer or lower-quality goods or services, or less innovation.

Section 7 of the Clayton Act prohibits mergers and acquisitions when the effect "may be substantially to lessen competition, or to tend to create a monopoly." "

Just wait til the day when someone does this with an autonomous car or delivery drone fleet!
fblp··on Welcome Home, Garry Tan
This is an impressively casual press release!
fblp··on Fake Dog for Home Security
Would be great if this could be setup with Google home or Alexa!
fblp··on Apple Car: Jony Ive’s design, Federighi’s skepticism, the jogger incident
I don't think Apple releasing a self driving car is good fit for the Apple brand or product development culture. Especially their value for secrecy and consumer privacy. We've already learnt from Waymo, Cruise and Tesla the importance of getting millions of miles of driving data. This "data first" approach has been challenging for each company. Apple is trying to go design first and delaying collecting data to refine their self driving capabilities - this will most likely delay their ability to be competitive from a safety perspective which is the most important thing for a customer. Pretty phones can't kill you but pretty cars can.
fblp··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
The profits by cloud providers are still limited by a competitive environment. Multiple cloud providers have a strong incentive to compete and keep prices low. It's much more difficult to switch from in-house data infra so they aren't as focused on efficiencies.

fblp··on Adobe tricks users into a 12 month contract
I could recreate this deceptive workload on the Adobe UK site but not the Australian or US sites. It looks like they're playing fast and loose in the UK. In Australia this would be prevented by Australian consumer laws which has broad protections for behavior likely to mislead consumers (fine print, unclear total contract price etc).

fblp··on Train burglaries in LA
Sigh - Any resourced and competent police or security force should be able to catch or deter thieves that are stealing packages from the same location. Additionally, mail theft laws which include prison as a consequence should be extended to package thefts if they don't already cover them.
fblp··on Show HN: I bought and tested the filtration of every mask on Amazon
I know you're also manufacturing masks but it'd be helpful if you pulled whether it was in stock and the price/unit from Amazon API

fblp··on Wind whipped fires raging through Boulder County
So many of the fires in California have also been started by downed electrical lines.

Although this is tragic, tech to help manage fires is coming along and states can raise their standards to encourage private companies to manage risk.

fblp··on Video of Tesla on Autopilot Crashing into Stopped Truck at 75mph
How is black truck stuck in your lane an edge case? Seems more like negligence.
fblp··on Video of Tesla on Autopilot Crashing into Stopped Truck at 75mph
Agreed, the silhouette fo the truck is clearly visible 2 seconds before impact which is actually quite a lot of time to react.

I'm reminder of this multi-vehicle accident where you can see some drivers clearly reacting 1-2 seconds before impact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9yqXzZ16ns

fblp··on A Safer San Francisco
Anyone else find it odd that announcements from the elected mayor are being published on a privately owned site, Medium?

Even Trump who used twitter prolifically would still link to official whitehouse government sites for policy announcements

fblp··on What's next for personal productivity
Hey friend - I don't want you to shower with money but i do want to share some things I've learnt about emotional-self management:

1. The body stores emotions and simple movement and body awareness can shift feelings. Read "Body Keeps the Score" for more.

2. Animals often shake and shudder out emotions, we've unlearnt that. Try shake it out.

3. There's some clinically backed programs that help with emotional regulation. My favorite is the Mindfulness Based Self Compassion Course https://centerformsc.org/. A key enphasis of the course is accepting emotions, that suffering is part of life. Unnecessary suffering is often caused by the resistance of the emotion.

Hope that helps! Email me samdup at gmail com if you'd like to discuss more!
