fb13··on Scientists find second ‘short sleep’ gene (2019)
So, it puts me at risk to participate like that even under a pseudonym. But, if you really think people like me are why HN isn't what it used to be then I'll step aside. I wish this place had the community it used to have, too.

True until you look at gambling and other products engineered to maximize addiction.
fb13··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
I always bookmark these idea mining threads, has anyone ever made use of them?

My though, because I haven't, is that if you want to essentially work on someone else's idea then go be an employee, otherwise the first actually passionate person will steal the show as soon as they show up.

fb13··on Particle seen switching between matter and antimatter at CERN
Thanks for the information. Does dark matter ever enter the discussion in terms of "there isn't even close to enough asymmetry to explain the amount of matter and the lack of antimatter we observe."
fb13··on Win at Risk by using systems thinking
Completely. I erroneously assumed this was referring to startups, which would make a great article.
fb13··on How fighter jets lock on, and how the targets know (2014)
Well, living in a highly militarized US city that sees vendors come in for various presentations regularly, not only is "lethality" a word that businesses use to sell, but also one everyone gets excited to hear. It's definitely weird at first as a civilian. But I see how it quickly becomes CAC/LTV.

Pardon the interruption for this opportunity to promote basic income.
fb13··on Congress is going to throw the kitchen sink at big tech
Wasn't sarcasm. More like an effort to prepare for worst, while still hoping for the best. Sorry I didn't make it evident that I actually do agree with all of your sentiment.

Problems may not exist, or be less obvious at least, if their bodies adapted to eating soy over generations. Even differences in gut biome can explain this.

Wow, this needs to be brought up more often.

And

Are quite the Freudian slips

> How do you address this issue? I think it's cheaper and better for everyone to address unfairness than to try to fix people after they come to feel abused by the world.

Yes, but somehow forward thinking isn't a common phenomenon in our society.

> Dear downvoter, I'd be interested in reading why I deserved it.

Undoubtedly you didn't "deserve" it. The voting system is just a way for the prevailing cliques to signify who's present. This thread is ripe with the hateful and helpless young men referred to in the article, evident by many of the comments. The worse part is that growing trend in this direction on HN. I'd say HN is currently experiencing max Q and I'm not sure it will make it to the other side without succumbing to the pressure(ie decent people leaving the site for good).

The experience here is worse than before, but still better than elsewhere. I think that means HN is ripe for innovation!

> I want to build a legacy, not some zuck or besos weekend shopping item.

Yeah, keep that view and you'll succeed. Beware of: children, relationships that expect things from you, anyone that isn't within your reality distortion field.

I'm with you. I guess your in your twenties. Me, early thirties. It does get harder to say no to everything everyone around you is doing successfully, for moral reasons.

Zuck/bezos and your kid stops getting bullied at public school...

Also: money buys legacy. Bezos and zuck can scrub the web of their wrongdoings(not that there are any) with 0.00000001% of they're stash.

It's the chicken egg problem. Woman birthed man. Who's to blame?

In all seriousness, if we are to succeed as a society, then ignorantly maintaining what are mostly over generalizations and stereotypes related to gender is a failing proposition. And that involves anything that existed pre-the-whole-world-is-now-connected.

That means

> It's not a binary decision, people. We don't need to decide which gender/sex is "better" or "more right".

But, for most of our parents it was binary and decision was obvious.

People fantasize about going back to that. Even the young kids, Gen Z, which is most concerning. Something alarming is that this comes from a feeling of helplessness. That and similar feelings explains the increase in massacres, hatred, and even why terrorists traditionally came from countries in turmoil. The kids need to be feeling hopeful not helpless.

I've never encountered "toxic masculinity" in my entire life.

Conservatives will be conservatives, aka creating a straw man so their base can feel just and continue in their camaraderie-through-bullying strategy.

Like the abolishment of "critical race theory" which was taught exactly zero places in the US before the calling for it's ban.

Well put. I had a much less constructive take on this comment, since deleted, because it wreaks of insecurity that's causing so much of this problem.

My dad was great, but through divorce, I had other great male role models, none of which you'd consider "feminine." However, it helped me understand the plurality of what it means to be a man. There are many ways to embrace your "natural" manhood that are beneficial to society. Animals rape each other, but we're not animals. Don't fall for the naturalistic fallacies.

fb13··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
> We just need to make sure it flows to the correct places.

That's the key, and also something that's unsolved. History shows that a lot of the money will be squandered in increasing "clever" ways, and it may take until the end of the decade before the public even realizes that it happened.

fb13··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
> Otherwise the unit can just be passed from friend to friend and never get back to market.

I'm not sure how this is unfair. Considering the way capital gains are taxed after the sale it seems like the grandfathered-in rent controls are just a lever at the opposite end of the spectrum. But of course, we don't want to give any levers to the poors so it has to go.

fb13··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
It needs to be significantly easier to buy a first house than a second house. Getting a first mortgage is "easy" until you factor in the "mortgage insurance" scam. Rent seeking should not be such an appealing option to make money. The result is a bunch of scummy landlords, essentially utilizing the poors to "keep down" the other poors through rent exploitation. Basically the "upper middle" class is the gatekeeper preventing lower classes from having social mobility by maximizing rent exploitation. It's a great system because it prevents the real upper classes from having to get their hands dirty.
fb13··on The drought in the western U.S. is getting bad
I thought about mentioning those companies, but I considered them to be too small of a market comparatively. For example, almost everyone buys 12-24 packs of their semi-locally bottled water, including national brands Dasani & aquafina that come from local bottling companies. I can't talk about the water issues in Fiji and France, but my guess is that it's <1% the total volume of bottled water consumed in any given area (outside LA or NYC of course).
fb13··on The drought in the western U.S. is getting bad
From what I understand, it's the opposite. I cannot get the same bottled water in the southeast as in the northeast, because it's bottled locally.
