fatneckbeard··on IBM to pause hiring in plan to replace 7,800 jobs with AI News
how do you improve shitty products and shitty service with AI? i dont get it.
fatneckbeard··on Learning COBOL: A Journey for the Modern Programmer (2021)
i know a system that runs cobol.

but there are like 4 or 5 other systems on top of it, some of them use XML, some html, some asp, some java, some vba, some c#.

i dont really understand the concept of a "x language job". like jobs tend to need people to learn systems and domain language, and be problem solvers, and communicators, coordinators, testers, the actual computer language is kind of irrelevant. like i cannot fathom there is a job out there where someone just hacks cobol all day and thats all they do.

fatneckbeard··on Academic Ranks Explained or What on Earth Is an Adjunct?
this reminds me of how the politburo of china is 99.9% male, the sons of the party elite get favorable positions, and you keep your position by telling the dictator what they want to hear instead of what is actually going on.
fatneckbeard··on Academic Ranks Explained or What on Earth Is an Adjunct?
finally prospective college students have a way to judge a university that is objective.

ask them what percentage of adjuncts they have, lower is obviously better.

then plot versus tuition cost, then you can figure out the optimal ratio of adjunct/tuition for your budget.

fatneckbeard··on Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) to join SRI International
yeah well my original point still stands.

"PARC was not at all secretive about its work. Its researchers published widely, and there was a regular flow of traffic between PARC and Stanford's computer science community. "

as opposed to a military intelligence company where all that would get you fired if not in prison.

fatneckbeard··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
wrong.

AI bias is going to be a huge problem when morons in court systems start using it to convict people, or businesses use it for hiring decisions or firing decisions

not only from the stupidity but since there are some shreds of the civil rights laws of the 1960s still active, AI companies could be liable for de-facto racist decisions that they informed.

fatneckbeard··on Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) to join SRI International
sri was never gonna allow a bunch of hippies and bearded longhairs tour their facility in the spirit of academic comradeship. (IE no microsoft, no apple being allowed to walk around and talk to people in the 80s to get the ideas for Macintosh and Windows)

Ironically, Apple and Microsoft would never allow some stranger company to walk into their offices and see everything they were developing either. lol

fatneckbeard··on Remote work brings hidden penalty for young professionals, study says
first world problems.

a huge number of employees are punished for socializing / having "random" meetings at work. why arent you at your cube / chair doing your job instead of wandering around talking to people?

the metrics a lot of companies use purposely look for that and punish it. and tech-bros should understand this because they developed a lot of those tools.

the lunch breaks are 20-30 minutes, the cafeteria is replaced with shitty vending machines, breakrooms have taken away all the chairs, the ones that are left have some giant TV blaring reality TV 24/7. people get in trouble for spending too much time in the shitter.

buildings are sectioned off, you have to have a badge to go anywhere and do anything. if you are in the wrong area you are a security risk and could be written up.

dunno if people realize what tiny tiny fraction of the workforce has these jobs where they are supposed to randomly walk around and talk to each other about problems.

fatneckbeard··on Amazon investigates after high-value orders were switched for cheaper products
the other way to see this is that the "new companies" are doing loss leading, do not actually make a profit on their retail businesses, are trying to gain an illegal monopoly by putting competitors out of business by doing illegal business practices and dumping not just products and services but dumping entire industries on the market for below cost.
fatneckbeard··on Borland C++ Builder (2015)
this whole borland/delphi approach is rather similar to how Visual Basic for Applications still works inside of Excel or Outlook, and is still used by big companies all over the world as i type this.
fatneckbeard··on 33TB of text data for a 1T-parameter model
Helen Keller managed to do pretty well without sight or hearing.
fatneckbeard··on The Red Hat model only worked for Red Hat
I find it hilarious they are saying VCs wont invest in redhat style business because it's growth is not "hyper".

These same VCs who are so fundamentally incompetent at the basics of capitalism, like risk management 101 of interest rates, that they had to get bailed out by the government, by the FDIC randomly deciding to rewrite the entire rule book that the rest of us normies have to live by.

fatneckbeard··on SUVs more dangerous to cyclists than other cars, study suggests
yeah ive been riding bicycles 30 years. what we want is separate bike roads, bike crosses, bike parking, like the Netherlands, we do not want some giant police movement to regulate truck sizes.

this is like the definition of why liberals cannot win elections. the first instinct is never to solve problems, it is to find some 'wrongdoer' and punish them.

fatneckbeard··on Joel Warner’s “The Curse of the Marquis de Sade”
never understand why people are fascinated by this child rapist. just like the "dahmer fans".

here is an interesting french person. Sophie Germain. Write an article about her. spend money studying her. put a biography of her out. put her in your literary magazines. celebrate her. make movies about her. she never raped anyone. she helped found number theory which you use every time you pick up a phone or a computer.

fatneckbeard··on Sorting waste and recyclables with a fleet of robots

fatneckbeard··on Apple Continues Efforts to Keep Retail Stores from Unionizing
its common sense and you just proved it.

poor people have shitty health. retail workers are poor. i.e. retail workers have shitty health. without any additional correlation you have that by definition.

fatneckbeard··on Apple Continues Efforts to Keep Retail Stores from Unionizing
working retail during the pandemic meant risking death. a lot of retail workers died.

the fact they weren't coal miners doesn't mean they didn't die from their work.

fatneckbeard··on Master Plan Part 3
yes. there is environmental sustainability and then there is social sustainability.

nobody wants to live in a carbon free world if every company is as abusive as Tesla to its employees. and that culture came from Musk himself. the way he treats people does not make for sustainable relationships.

fatneckbeard··on GitHub India's entire Engineering team is fired
for every US HN commenter talking about their "awful experience" with Indian teams let me talk about my awesome professors from IIT who came to America to work in Math/CS education. Or about the great Indian people I met online working on open source projects on github. Or about the skilled Indian immigrants who work where I work. Or the immigrant Indian doctors who saved my family members life in the hospital.
fatneckbeard··on An ancient Indian Buddhist monk buried in Athens
I think there is a lot we can still learn, but the areas where the artifacts exist have succumbed to geo-political conflict between the great powers that surround them. Such as Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, etc.

i get it. in high school in the 90s i was fascinated by fuzzy logic and neural nets. in college, before the big web , i was doing interlibrary loan for papers on neural networks.

there was one paper where someone had just inserted electrodes in monkey's brains and apparently got nothing important or interesting out of it. killed them for no reason. it was kind of horrifying to the point i never really wanted anything to do with neural nets for a long time and certainly did not want to be in an industry with people like that. so i didnt.

but now i think the only thing that could stop an out of control AI is probably another AI that has the same computorial capabilities but an allegiance to humanity because of its experiences with humans. Sort of like in the documentary Turbo Kid.

we are seeing this right now in Ukraine. All of these smart missiles and drones and modern targeting systems are basically AIs fighting against each other and their human operators. Russia is way way behind on computers and AI for generations because of cultural reasons and because of that they will very likely lose. we dont really get a choice but to move forward. kind of like all those cultures that tried to resist industrialization a few centuries ago.

this reminds me of the Morris Worm when a guy was experimenting with code copying itself across the early internet and accidentally caused a mass netwide DDOS because the thing wound up like the Broomsticks in Fantasia.

edit - just realized Morris cofounded this lovely company whose website we are all commenting inside of.

fatneckbeard··on Sex worker-led payment platform shuts down after being cut off by processor
how is it "sex worker led". Is Ameen Soleimani a sex worker?

Oh Ameen is also working on Tornado Cash, https://twitter.com/ameensol is that part of his sex work?

fatneckbeard··on Sam Altman 'A Little Bit Scared' of ChatGPT, Will Eliminate 'Many' Jobs
our most pressing need is to ensure the survival of the species given that the planet's climate is inherently unstable over a period of 100,000+ years.

which means we need to learn terraforming and/or interstellar travel within the next 100,000 years, without killing our entire species while we do it.
