Not really sure about Abhishek, but based on thr name he's an Indian and I'm fairly sure that Niken is

A. NA in india B. Too expensive C. We get conversion kits which can add two side wheels as a rear wheel/chassis attachment which many handicapped people use here in India.

fatboy93··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?
Probably my phone that I got two years back ~ $350 K20pro)

My 1080p 144hz monitor that I occasionally use for gaming but mostly reading: $160 in January.

fatboy93··on Twitter takes down tweets criticising handling of pandemic at government request
Not really, this will be swept under the rug by creating a new BS completely unrelated to the current issue at hand.

And people will forget this in a week.

It is absolutely bonkers how well foobar works under Wine.

I too have a large library and foobar just picks it up immediately.

fatboy93··on Video RAM Transplant Doubles RTX3070 Memory to 16GB
True but without comparable offerings like CUDA, it's not really looking bright tbh. Open CL and open vino are years behind virtually speaking with respect to support.

Not really, they are trying to sidegrades or downgrades.

For eg, Regalia first -> millenia; which is a flat out downgrade!

fatboy93··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend $1000 to improve your productivity?
I was struggling because of terrible eyesight, and the ergonomics. I used to have an IPS monitor that used to fatigue my eyes a ton.

I also have a cheapo Cherry MX Blues (TVS gold) and a Logitech G402 mouse. Ergonomics and eye sore was killing me.

I sold off that monitor, got a decent 24in 1080p LG monitor with a TN Panel with VESA compatibility, Height extensions and boom all the eye fatigues have basically gone along with the shoulder pain.

The biggest thing that I have an issue with in Writer is basically the performance.

Drop in an image or two, that particular page becomes slow as molasses.

This is yet to be fixed and it causes massive headache, when you're just trying to zoom through the content for quick edits.

fatboy93··on Which smartphone, laptop and tablet brands break down the most?
Had a same issue with their Studio line a few years back. It was a ship of Thesus situation. Each and every part was more or less replaced.

I have a Thinkpad T450s and there's been no issue in the past 5 years of owning it.

You should a small vacation sometime ;)

Bugs can always be fixed, mental health can't.

Thanks for all the awesome work Greg!

Very informative article!

I love the website that OP has created though. Does anybody know what stack/platform is it based upon?

fatboy93··on Software breakthrough radically boosts the speed of nanopore DNA sequencers
Mike Schatz is awesome, and is genuinely one of the most amazing people.

I've met him on a couple of occasions and it was always amazing that he takes time off to listen to whatever ideas you've got and tries to debate them regarding their feasibility.

fatboy93··on AMD CPU sales skyrocket with Ryzen 5000 launch, leaving Intel in the dust
Mos of the workload for my domain involved just a ton of Ram and CPU compute only.

Ofcourse there are related subdomains where I need the graphics, but we are talking about 1 in 1000 use case.

I just need the gfx card to drive the display only.

fatboy93··on AMD CPU sales skyrocket with Ryzen 5000 launch, leaving Intel in the dust
I'm planning to build my workstation and I'm settled on 5950x, but the fact that I need to get a gfx card separately is irritating, given that I'm in India and it adds a ton of money that I could be spending elsewhere!

What about phones running on Kirin or exynos SoCs?

shouldn't be that difficult to support your own fabbed SoC, but yet they sorely lack updates.

fatboy93··on Refused U.S. visa eight times, Zoom CEO is now a billionaire
Yeah, US visa is so damn weird and backwards. I had a presentation and poster at a conference in the US.

I get that many Indians get settled in the US, but in my case the interviewer said he needed concrete proof that I would be returning back, despite having my employer's letter, bank documents, my Tax returns etc.

It essentially boils down to your willingness to return back to the home country and apparently I didn't demonstrate that. I just told him that I'd be rather homeless in my home country than be in a foreign land, while showing my return tickets.

He laughed and then he granted the visa.

It seems that the interviewer's mood matters the most tbh.

fatboy93··on Linux Problems on the Desktop (2018)
Did you try notepadqq, late or kwrite?

Notepadqq is notepad++!

fatboy93··on Linux Problems on the Desktop (2018)
Just curious, but I had the same issues, turns our I didn't install gvfs and associated handlers for mounting unmounting drives. Turns out installing it resolved most of my USB connection issues
fatboy93··on Ask HN: How do you organise your hard drive?
Everything gets classified into a bunch of related folders and symlinked if needed.

Other than that a Readme file

fatboy93··on $200 retail whole genome sequencing now available
Basically it means that you can derive single nucleotide variations to do genome wide association studies. However we do this low coverage of sequencing for plants to aid in the breeding programs
fatboy93··on $200 retail whole genome sequencing now available
30x for a human genome means that you'd be roughly generating approximately 100Gb data. The human genome is roughly 3.3Gb

1x is basically 3.3Gb

fatboy93··on $200 retail whole genome sequencing now available
While I agree with you on that, obtaining the required kits that the sequencer needs is another headache altogether.

The reads lengths might be fascinating with Nick Loman's group reporting upto an Mb in size. But the error rates as well matter. Unfortunately nanopore errors are not easily mitigable, whereas PacBio's are.

The one place where nanopore has them beat is the sheer portability and ready run time.

Strains involved in 2015 ebola outbreak were being sequenced real time!

fatboy93··on Amazon private label brands are quietly taking over Amazon.com
I love their USB-C cable. I've gotten their 6ft cable and it's amazing. No damage since I bought it in the past year.

It also seems that Benson has labelled it adequate for phones.

fatboy93··on Ask HN: What do you struggle with?
To be really honest, I struggle with python, perl. This frankly sucks, because most of my field is made up of those two.

R feels like home just like bash.

Perl feels too cryptic and python too verbose and everything feels that I have to google.

Having no programming buddy to help learn with, it's an uphill task.

fatboy93··on Ask HN: Best way to publish papers as a non-scholar?
If you are pursuing that approach, why not publish it on Arxiv? Or put it up in a blog and get doi for it using figshare.
fatboy93··on Learn just a little Awk (2010)
Don't forget join, tr and column. Makes formatting a breeze.

Most of my time is spent on the terminal and without these I'd shoot myself.

fatboy93··on Learn just a little Awk (2010)
I fucking love awk and sed so much that to my chagrin I haven't learnt to program properly.

I tend to one line most of my things in bash and tend to write a script if I have a multiple use case.

Such is the folly in bioinformatics. Most of the stuff that we use tend to be one off. :/

fatboy93··on Ask HN: What are some of the better Hacker News apps?
Try disabling lazy loading. I'm on a consistently slow network and lazy loading sometimes doesn't work at all.
