You can also just buy a Mullvad gift card on Amazon that has a random code that you have to scratch off to see.
farisjarrah··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
If you squint, that almost sounds like an AGPL license but for physical chargers.
farisjarrah··on Thonny – Python IDE for beginners
Thonny actually does this on the basic raspberry pi install. It launches into a basic mode with big tablet like buttons and then you can click "Advanced Mode" and it goes to a more normal Windows experience with drop down windows and more options. On a personal note, i've found thonny to be the easiest way to get started with raspberry pi pico development. You just plug your pico in, fire up thonny and select the Micropython interpreter and you are now live coding on a rp2040 microcontroller. It can even download the fresh U2F image to your pico. It is a very good/simple user experience.
farisjarrah··on I found a secret US Government surveillance program (2019)
Randomly found Advisory Circles on twitter. Really cool stuff. You're really making OSINT much more accessible to common people.
farisjarrah··on What would it take to bring back the dinosaurs?
Apparently it's become so commonplace among pets that my dog's veterinary insurance policy specifically has an exclusion saying that our pet insurance does not cover cloning. I just googled "Dog Cloning" and there were a bunch of results offering the service.
farisjarrah··on Is America Stealing TSMC?
The video title is based on real sentiment from people in Taiwan. Asianometry is a treasure trove of easily accessible information on semi-conductor manufacturing, and business in Asia. I highly suggest you watch the video before passing judgement. Asianometry videos are no nonesense, no filler, and very eloquently explain current and past events and businesses.
farisjarrah··on Ask HN: What is your go to idiot-filter question in interviews?
ChatGPT can solve fizzbuzz with no effort at all. Not sure these sorts of "idiot"-filters are as valid anymore
farisjarrah··on Photopea: A free Photoshop alternative making millions
photopea is one of the best examples of a web application imo. Its a full featured image editing software just running in your browser. No sign up or login required and you can just upload and quickly work off a local file for your computer. You just fire it up and start working.
farisjarrah··on $570M worth of Binance’s BNB token stolen
Its also a golden age for people who understand code and smart contracts and are willing to take advantage of others without breaking any laws. A few of the major "hacks" lately have simply been taking advantage of errors in how smart contracts were coded.

Just because people eat meat out of a package from the super market does not mean they are okay with their bacon being raised on a farm where the pig was in a 1 square meter cage its whole life. Most people don't have the time, effort, or will to fight against large factory farming practices because they are too busy trying to survive and take care of themselves and their families. You can eat meat and still care about the welfare of the animals being raised. They're not mutually exclusive things.
farisjarrah··on KeePassXC: Beware of unofficial Microsoft Store listing
Fantastic usability if you can get a good story around syncing your passwords in place. Most people use Dropbox or some other cloud storage as the location for their password vault and it sync's everywhere for you automatically.
farisjarrah··on Kill-sticky, a bookmarklet to remove sticky elements and restore scrolling
You can add this on iphone by adding another webpage as a bookmark using the share menu in safari and then going back and editing the bookmark so its what you want it to be.
farisjarrah··on The Next Silicon Valley Will Be in the US Heartland: Steve Case
The billboards in San Francisco off Hwy 80 and Hwy 101 never cease to surprise me. I'll ask my wife, who was a middle school teacher, what a "Datadog" or "Salesforce" is and she never knows (or cares, which is fair enough). The tech culture is so ingrained that even the non-techies are oblivious to how deeply rooted it is.
farisjarrah··on Things I Won't Work With: Azidoazide Azides, More or Less (2013)
This is a great video on Azidoazide Azide, explosions and fire is a horrifically entertaining and educational youtube channel. I say horrific because of the chemicals that he works with. But he seems like he knows what he's doing... Hopefully...

farisjarrah··on TSMC to begin 3nm chip production next month
I don't think that's necessarily problematic anymore then measuring fluid viscosity is problematic. Once someone start's getting into debates over the size of transistors on microprocessors then you are already getting pretty wonky and are going to need some science to describe things anyways.
farisjarrah··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
Conversely, I been seeing more people then ever riding, building and modifying electric and motorized bicycles. You can modify a regular $200 mountain bike with a $200 motor kit from amazon and have a $400 motorcycle that you don’t need a motorcycle license for. If you really don’t want to burn fossil fuels, a $1000 bafang mid drive ebike kit can turn a regular bicycle into a hill crushing monster and can be installed with almost no specialized tools.

The housing crisis is definitely a tougher nut to crack, but I don’t believe the auto manufacturers have quite the same leverage over the American population long term, especially if gas prices and electric vehicle prices keep skyrocketing significantly faster then inflation.

farisjarrah··on Doom Builder
Decino is amazingly prolific. I'm not sure I know of another creator that has the depth and breadth into a specific category of gameplay as him. Over the pandemic there were some creators that started going deep into playing various Super Mario spins, but Decino is almost on anther level. He has been churning out Doom play throughs regularly for the last 3 years, and he really goes into the theory and code of how Doom works in his yellow background videos. Very impressive YouTube channel.
farisjarrah··on Arduino raises $32M Series B round
There are RP2040 based boards with wifi are starting to come out. While they aren't horrendously expensive, they are double or triple the cost of a regular base raspberry pi pico model.

Here is one I have seen, but I haven't used or played with it.

farisjarrah··on New ultra-stealthy Linux backdoor isn’t your everyday malware discovery
This seems to be different from previous LD_PRELOAD vulnerabilities in that it's using eBPF as part of the mechanism to obfuscate itself.
farisjarrah··on Ask HN: How do you record your personal finances?
Post tax Roth-401k's are a thing. When you quit your job and roll it over to your personal account they also go into your Roth ira. But your point still stands.

farisjarrah··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
I was thinking about this. What if you got something like a mini induction melting furnace, and then just had a fan blowing hot air up through a grate that the pan can rest on?
farisjarrah··on Rising temperatures erode human sleep globally
On amazon in the US you can get either a 12,000 btu through-the-wall AC unit for about $700 or a 12,000 btu wall ductless mini-split(heat pump, so AC and heat) for about $850. For either of those you can find models for cheaper or more expensive. I just chose general middle of the road prices. So the cost is no longer 5x, the prices are becoming a lot more comparable for heat pumps vs regular ac units. Also, if you check out the efficiency ratings, for most mini-splits these days, you'll make up the cost difference in your electrical bill vs a run of the mill AC unit in the medium to long run.

Uhh… Their own terms and conditions say:

“”” You may not use our products for any illegal or unauthorized purpose nor may you, in the use of the Service, violate any laws in your jurisdiction (including but not limited to copyright laws). You must not transmit any worms or viruses or any code of a destructive nature. A breach or violation of any of the Terms will result in an immediate termination of your Services “””

So by using their service… then you’re breaking their own terms and conditions? I’m not sure they thought this one through very well.

farisjarrah··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
I'm not that big on FPS games. When I play Nintendo I generally play things like Mario Party or Mario Kart. A friend recently gave me an Xbox Series S, and off the top of my head I couldn't think of a single multi-player party sorta party game. I'm sure there are plenty of these games, but they definitely don't have the same type of draw as Mario.

farisjarrah··on Chomsky: Ending Climate Change “Has to Come from Mass Popular Action,” Not Pols
I agree with much of your sentiment, but a top down approach with government regulations is absolutely necessary to assist with stopping harmful emissions and pollution. It's extremely difficult to tell everyone to walk to McDonalds to not waste gas and to not grab a plastic straw. Most everyone will not follow through with those requests when McDonalds is quite literally giving it away straws for free and gas vehicles are so readily available. But if you force McDonalds to use a recycled paper lid that doesn't require a straw, and force their suppliers to deliver those products with electric vehicles, and we force car manufacturers to only produce electric vehicles: then we can stop the emissions and waste generation at the source. People will have no choice but to take more green options if thats all that is available to them.

farisjarrah··on Happy birthday Vim (2020)
The thoughtbot series on vim is great. I'm really glad I found this video early in my Vim career. I've got a very minimal vimrc as a result and just try to lean into the vim builtins

farisjarrah··on High-fidelity remote communication
I got an Avaya Huddle Cam, like the kind in many large enterprise conference rooms for $200 off amazon, its plug and play and has all sorts of zoom and pan features, HDMI output, stereo microphones and is 4K and because its Avaya, and regular folks dont seem to know about them, they're not really more overpriced then normal because of the pandemic or shipping. Also got a $35 Monoprice branded usb microphone does quite admirably. My co-workers have complimented me that it sounds very clear. The best part is that they are all plug and play and work on Linux/Windows/Mac with no additional downloads or drivers.
farisjarrah··on Show HN: QuickServ – User-friendly web server

To deter using QuickServ in production, it runs on port 42069. Hopefully that makes everyone think twice before entering it into a reverse proxy or port forward config.

Ha! Smart thinking
