I am thinking of creating a startup, entirely focused on building up the engineering muscle of early career professionals, students and interns by offering them a real world opportunity to build software in a real world production environment with real world customers.
Here is where I am: I am starting conversations with universities to introduce the program, reaching out to my social circle, especially parents of kids in this situation to ask for seed money and trying to figure out which city would be best placed for such an endeavor. Couple of caveats: Ideally, I want to build this with at least one physical location with in person experience. This is to give the new hires full exposure to building things with guidance from senior engineers in close proximity. Finally, the seed is not guaranteed to provide a return on investment, at least initially.
Here is what you can do: If you are in this situation, reach out to me. If you have a program at your university that might be interested in collaborating with me on this, please either have them reach out to me or share the contact info with me via email. Finally, if you have been blessed and fortunate and successful enough to help, either by contributing your time helping next generation of software engineers, please reach out.
While there may be some naivety in this comment, I think it may be a better idea to address the issue or educate the folks that may not consider perils of unchecked capitalism to be a significant risk instead of just downvoting them.
Wouldn't you want to take your process (and threads if appropriate) out of scheduling entirely using cpu and thread/process pinning? Using taskset command for instance.
I hope we are not conflating conservative values with monoculturalism and you meant to ask about two different values. Also, as someone who has been at the receiving end of monoculturalism crowd, I hope they find enlightenment eventually.
Kids in high school age are especially vulnerable and need a lot of vigilance on parents' part. It is tempting to think we can take our foot off the gas a little bit but between finding the line between helicoptering and kids on autopilot, this stuff is almost a full-time job in itself.
No. The issue is the means used to target ads on this site are transmitted back to ad servers and used outside this context which is a nightmare scenario.
I wish things were as simple as this, however scientists' desire to share and collaborate stands directly at odds with state actors desire to access the technology differentiators. Would be nice to live in a world where these technologies weren't deployed against other humans (on all sides) but that is not the reality we live in.
Its not what the tabloid said, it is what the senior leadership of bbc said. Specifically saying this sort of combination (regardless of talent or chemistry) is not going to happen today. Sad, that is.
With the exception of chicago (and a few other cities like newyork), concealed carry is usually granted. And I say this as someone whose paperwork for the application got lost by the department performing background check, twice (because of my name). Even in new york city and most of california, it is possible, just takes some doing (speak to an attorney that specializes in this) and don't forget the training.
A lot of great comments and suggestions. Something that I usually share with new developers is to get a feel for the machine. Get to know the system and its architecture even if you are writing your programs in a high level language. Try to imagine the computer as a friend that is fulfilling your request using its organs, the cores, the memory, the registers, the L1 and L2 cache and so on. Put yourself in its shoes and have some empathy for it. The discipline is usually referred to as mechanical sympathy and some of the best software I have used and studied was built around these principles.
In USA, H1B visa is a dual intent visa and implies a possible path to permanent residence and citizenship. This was shared with me by the immigration officer back in my country of origin (he was not interested in my ties to my country of origin and explained this when I asked why).
There are a ton of gremlins in Tesla just waiting to go off like time bombs. I recently got a very expensive repair just outside of warranty where the car simply refused to charge. Paid nearly 3000 for the diagnosis and repair for the car to start charging again - we are talking about a car with no wear and tear parts for the most part costing nearly 3K because a chip somewhere between the charge port and battery failed. My whole reason for buying it was that this would be the ultimate reliable car without ICE or brake wear, leaving tires as the only consumable. Guess I was wrong.
I think you are referring to our brains' inability and incapacity to perceive reality, right on. But recognizing a smaller illusion (religion) within the larger one (the reality) is still seeing part of reality as it is.
About time. I have been working on a similar problem ever since I found out about the Saudi agent that was uncovering twitter user identities to the royals (https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/saudis-recruited-twitt...). The main idea is to have zero knowledge for social graphs (both the connectivity and communication). The product behaves like a newsgroup clone with subscriptions and threads featuring zero knowledge (for host i.e. me and any other parties not subscribed/authorized to the topic).
Abhorable. Root cause may indeed be poverty and greed but also the uncontrolled population growth that in itself is the cause and effect of poverty.
Pakistani government (read military for all intents and purposes) is focused on concentrating wealth, power and land in the hands of generals, their children and a few land owners while the population at large is fed a steady diet of lies about enemies at the border and beyond.
This fear of others (india, isreal, america even) is used to spend and therefore siphon the resources into the pockets of powerful few. The stage is different, the story not so much.
Generally speaking, at most companies, one's credibility and therefore ability to affect outcomes is directly linked to titles and compensation (generally speaking). This is why they (or really any incumbents) cannot afford me. Besides, while I don't care about money that puts bread on the table, a privacy focused communication and/or search platform that turns into a successful and sustainable business is definitely something I am interested in.
I have refused to get hired by google and Facebook because they give me the creeps. Duck duck go cannot afford me. Maybe, we can start our own search/social/nlp startup? I don't care about making any money, if you are in the same boat as I am (dreading the status quo, wanting to do something, don't need or not driven by money, reply to this and we will try to make it happen - reminds me of the hypersane post from a couple days ago btw, the crazies not driven by materialism and can see through shit).
Perhaps what would help in understanding the views espoused by OP (which I find very helpful) is to consider the idea of justifiable homicide. In France, when the police kill knife wielding maniacs, it seems to be black and white, however when cops in USA kill a mentally unstable person in self defense, the line gets murky. It gets completely greyed out when Mesa PD kills an innocent for not being able to follow contradictory commands. Where do YOU draw the line? What about moving the line to China and the Muslim minoritities being ethnically wiped? Talk to a Han Chinese on the street and see if they see it your way? Same with Palestine and Israel. The world is not black and white.
This a very well articulated comment, I wish I could have this conversation with the two of you over drinks. Maybe this should be a feature of hacker news.
That is the idea when you control the system. This however is not a system, it is an ecosystem - payments ecosystem. No one party controls the interfaces or implementations between any two counter-parties, let alone multiple counter-parties along the line. The point I was making was infact about lack of control over externalities like this one. For those in payments, this actually is a real problem, especially with small merchants in developing countries but true for even large ones in the west. And this does not even go into the details of cash oriented systems in india, china and elsewhere.
There are a number of complexities involved but external factors outside of system's control are most critical. Consider for example a customer that places an order with a merchant for $800 paying for three items with prices of $200, $300 and $300 - merchant tries to settle $300 for item 2 that is available in the inventory, then $200 followed by $300 the next day. What if the original $300 got declined due to insufficient funds (bank transfers can take hours or even a day to decline)? How does the bank know whether the next $300 is a retry or remainder of the original authorization? The correct operation requires cooperation and idempotent behavior from the merchant, their acquirer, the network used by the customer and correct implementation at the issuing or money holding bank. Implementing distributed transactions and settlement ledgers across multiple parties? That's what blockchains are for but we are quite a ways from that (part game theory, part tragedy of the commons, if you will).
And in the absence of correctly designed idempotent behaviors across the processing pipeline, it becomes unbelievably complex to handle all the corner cases correctly. The problem with marketing folks parroting and promoting the exactly once semantics is that any weak link in the processing chain compromises the correctness of entire system and what is worse is that the implications of subtle errors may not become evident for years to come (history is rife with legal cases and negative consequences of getting it wrong when it comes to folks' money).
In critical sectors like banking, finance and payments, designing systems in well understood and boring manner is absolutely critical while hoping for the best based on shiny brochures and marketechture is a sure recipe for disaster.
Muslims prefer the spelling muslim not moslem and is infact the spelling used in the article.
Moslem the way it is pronounced actually has negative meaning (opressor I think). Regardless of how one feels towards the billions of followers of islam, I am not in favor of calling them by a term they see as evil and derogatory, especially when it isn't even a quote from the article.
